Ok season premiere. The subplot of the fake ids was funny and I like what Murray did.

I thought it was fantastic. Beverly was on fire the whole time.

Awesome pairing with The Middle.

Loved it.

Definitely won the Wednesday premiere night for me. Barry reminds me of so many morons I went to school with. David Spade's "legal advice" was great and Murray is becoming more 3 dimensional than the first season.

Great kick off. I swear I had one of the Barry's shirt.

Loved making mix tapes - you had to pull out all your tapes, q them up, write down all the songs on the case...

Glad to see everyone kind of growing up - has a wonder years vibe now

I know the creator said the show is supposed to be just a big jumble of stuff from the '80s, but I thought I would still point the following out:

The wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer took place on Wednesday, 29 July 1981.

Family Ties is an American sitcom that aired on NBC from September 22, 1982 until May 14, 1989.

"Eternal Flame" is a ballad and love song by The Bangles from their 1988 album Everything.

Not to mention the Bo Knows T-Shirt which was a late 80s thing. Or the Garbage Pail Kids which was the mid 80s, along with "We're Not Gonna Take It" being a hit.

This is like the 80s being explained by someone who was on crack the whole time.

At first this bothered me, but now that I look at it -- the show would be boring and slow if they went in chronological order and year by year.

The show, characters, and scenarios move much quicker when they do quick references and little bits.

Now that the characters are more developed, and showing some emotion the format works for me.

I have no issue with the time jumps, it's all a blur to me anyway

Great show. If you look back 3 decades the dates become pretty jumbled anyway unless the event was special.

I still chuckle that the Dad gets to walk around the show nearly half naked...that has still not gotten old to me.

Also, is there a thread for Blackish, the ratings actually went up for last nights ep compared to last week, so clearly I must not be the only DVDTalker that is enjoying the show.

Edited to add: okay, I see there is a thread for the show, my search term was missing the dash which explains why I could not immediately find the thread.

Man, I actually came here to complain about that.

Well, it's a sitcom: they wouldn't have to do it in chronological order. Episodes could be in any order at all, although doing it that way would present its own challenges, like changing hairstyles and fashion and the characters aging\not aging. For example, despite the 80s reputation of being the "neon clothes decade", the stereotypical "80s girls outfit" people wear to costume parties was really only 1983-1985, when Madonna was hitting it big. And in the early 80s - from 1980-1982 - most people looked just like they did in the late 70s.

So... yeah. I get that the show is just "random\jumbled memories of the 80s". But I wish they'd be a bit more consistent within an episode.

This isn't a PBS docementary on the 80's. They even start each show with "It was 1980 something" and the theme song says "I don't know the future, but the past keeps getting clearer every day."

If you are appraoching The Goldberg's with a "Lost clue notebook" and looking for innacuracies with the timeline, you are missing the point - it's a fun show! Sit back and enjoy!

This is definitely a show that you just go with. I don't mind the time jumps b/c it allows them to comment on all of the signature moments of the 80s.

On a side note, thanks to recent internet events I now know who AJ Michalka is so that adds another dimension to the scenes with Lainey.

Same thing for me - it took an episode or two for me to stop worrying about it, and now it's one of my favorite current shows.

That stuff would bug me if it were a period drama. But since it's a sitcom it gets a total pass imho. And yeah, this is pretty much one of my favorite things on tv for the last year or so.

I kinda got used to it; makes you think while watching the show of when these actual events really happened.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) - Season 2 Thread - premiering 9/24/14

Yes, I get it. It's a sitcom, not a documentary. And yes, all the anachronisms might even be intentional, a bunch of 80s pop culture mixed together on purpose to make it all timeless. But the show almost always ends with actual footage of real events: why go to the trouble of making a fantasy 80s world, then drop the real version at the end... every time?

Last night's episode had Barry and his group of friends going to the movies to see Porky's II. It was sold-out, so they went to see Wargames instead. Both movies came out in 1983. At the same time, mom and Erica talked about "the new Madonna album", which Bev verifies to be Like a Virgin, which came out in 1984.

Problem is, both of those things were cultural icons of the 80s: most people had no idea hacking existed until Wargames came out, and there were countless newspaper and magazine articles and bits on shows like 60 Minutes and 20/20 about hacking, hackers, and whether the events from the movie could somehow happen. A year later, "Madonnamania" broke out: millions of teen girls started dressing like Madonna, to the extent that some department stores had entire sections dedicated to "Madonna wear".

I guess I just wonder if people would call out the show more if it were set in another era. I mean, imagine if Barry and his friends had seen The Graduate while Erica went to Woodstock... despite those things being two years apart.

EDIT: Bev also made a reference to Madonna's "Express Yourself", which is from Like a Prayer, which came out in 1989.

I wonder the same about technology. Adam's Apple 2 Plus computer didn't have "32-bit color graphics" let alone 8-bit color. The computer monitor and printer didn't come out until 1986 when the Apple 2 Plus would've been discontinued for a couple of years and replaced by the Apple 2E.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) - Season 2 Thread - premiering 9/24/14

The disparities re: when movies/albums came out do not bother me in the least. This show is fun, funny and has a lot of heart. I especially like the real video clips at the end of each show where Adam Goldberg's family and friends are shown doing something that formed the basis for that episode. I love this show.
