It’s shaping up to be a good week for horror author Stephen King. On Wednesday night, news broke that David Yates and Steve Kloves wanted to tackle a multi-film big screen adaptation of his novel The Stand. That was exciting, but now we’ve got even more good news for fright fans: the author’s upcoming novel, 11/22/63, has already been optioned. Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme (who brought us The Silence of the Lambs) has secured the rights to King’s newest tale – which is due to debut in stores this November. Demme will write the screenplay and direct the film, should he be able to procure financing and studio backing. King will executive produce if a deal falls into place. King’s latest is another 1,000-plus page tome, this one about a school teacher who finds a portal that warps him back to 1963 -- where he tries to stop the JFK assassination. While in the past, he encounters VIPs like Elvis and the President, but more importantly, meets a high school librarian who becomes the love of his life. The tale doesn’t sound like the straight horror offerings King has become so famous for, but we suspect there’s more to the tale than the blurb discloses. Let’s cross our fingers and hope both 11/22/63 and The Stand make it through development and to a theater screen. After the disappointment of watching Ron Howard’s The Dark Tower project fall apart at Universal, some good Stephen King news is certainly in order. |

I love the title, the JFK assassination angle, the fact that Demme's attached and it's based on a new King novel.
Then I read the synopsis and it just sounds so incredibly dopey. :sad: |

It's actually one of King's better recent reads even if the "science" is beyond goofy in it. There's no Elvis in the book though so not sure if the press release writer has even gone near it!

I just read it and it's one of my favorite King books and his best in years. I may be biased because I have a special fascination with the JFK assassination (I came to the minority conclusion that Oswald did it and he did it alone). The book is so much more than that inaccurate and silly blurb. Granted, don't expect any real science behind the science fiction (but is Back to the Future, for example, any less goofy in that respect? I don't think so). But King does fully realize his vision and he takes great care to make it internally consistent and logical which is what really matters in such a story.
I'm glad to hear it's going to be made into a movie but it's a long book (although it's 800+ pages, not 1000) which would probably be better served by a miniseries. |

I still think "Under The Dome" would make a great TV Series.
Jonathan Demme has been hit or miss over the years for me...I'm still not sure he can direct something of this scope (even Silence was a pretty "small" film). |

Wasn't this the story that Gene Roddenberry was obsessed with trying to make into a Star Trek movie over and over and over again until they finally just walled him up in a desolate office and gave him an honorary title?

9-hour miniseries produced by JJ Abrams.
The miniseries, based on King’s best-selling 2011 novel published by Simon & Schuster imprint Scribner, follows high school English teacher Jake Epping, who travels back in time to try to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on the fateful date in American history. A premiere date for “11/22/63,” to be released as nine hour-long episodes, has not been set. Meanwhile, Hulu has not determined whether it will make the full series available exclusively to Hulu Plus subscribers, or whether some episodes will be free on Hulu.com. Executive producers are King, Abrams through his Bad Robot Prods. (“Person of Interest,” “Fringe,” “Lost”), Bridget Carpenter and Bryan Burk. Carpenter will write the teleplay. Bad Robot’s Kathy Lingg is co-executive producer, and Athena Wickham is producer. In announcing the pact, Stephen King said: “If I ever wrote a book that cries out for long-form, event-TV programming, ‘11/22/63’ is it. I’m excited that it’s going to happen, and am looking forward to working with J.J. Abrams and the whole Bad Robot team.” |

Just finished reading this a few months back - one of my favorite King books. Hopefully, they won't screw up the story (like they did with UNDER THE DOME). Just go with what's on the page!

Never got around to reading the novel but Hulu? Meh. Plus UtD's level of shittiness really detracts from this announcement. |

11/22/63 was originally optioned to be a 2 hour movie and Jonathan Demme was set to write the script and direct. He and King had conflicts over the adaptation and then later it got optioned by Abrams' company. I don't think it would ever worked as 2 hour movie. I think this needs to be done as a limited series and that is it. The casting of Franco was probably done to help reel in viewers. I think it depends on who is cast for the other roles too. |
