An unexpected ally helps Kevin (Justin Theroux) get out of a jam near the town of Cairo. Meanwhile, an elaborate Memorial Day initiative by the Guilty Remnant plunges Mapleton into chaos. Holy Wayne (Paterson Joseph) grants a final wish; Tom (Chris Zylka) copes with his new reality; Nora (Carrie Coon) makes a life-changing decision.

Written by Damon Lindelof & Tom Perrotta; directed by Mimi Leder.

Episode 10 of 10

This was renewed for a 2nd season (if you were unaware) and will return sometime in 2015.

I really thought Nora was going to do it. That probably would have been too depressing even for this show. Interested to see where they go for a second season. I would have been pretty satisfied had the show ended right here.

My appreciation of this show steadily increased throughout the season. I didn't think I would say this, but it doesn't really matter to me if we never find out where the departed went--the stories of those left behind has been interesting enough. I look forward to season 2.

Really good ending, as this was the first week I looked forward to an episode, and didn't just DVR it and watch it during the week. The show will never be 'Breaking Bad' Great, but its still a good show that keeps you guessing and many of the characters have become symphatetic. Looking forward to Season 2 and if Justin Theroux's character goes crazy or not.

What a mind-fuck of an episode. I think this episode clearly was shot to be a possible finale to the series, in the event that HBO didn't renew. I can definitely say that it resulted in one of the most chilling hours of television I've seen, with many scenes still creeping me out this very moment. I guess Wayne was no fraud! I think the second season has the potential to be pretty damn excellent.

Weird as shit but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Wife not as much.

All along I was planning to watch the entire season, but somehow I stopped at episode 3, the best up until then.

Last night I decided to watch episode 4, and I really liked it. Not sure if it's a show I can marathon, but I definitively will watch the entire season.

Wayne seemed like a waste of an interesting character. I would have liked to see more of him. I wonder what Kevin's wish was?

To me it seemed like his wish was to have his family back.

Ah, it's finally over. I hope-watched for the first half of the season, then hate-watched the last few episodes.
I think the entire season sucked, from beginning to end. Nothing stood out as even remotely enjoyable ot interesting, and I've known since NYPD Blue that Amy Brennanman is a shitty actress. Here she accomplishes that feat with very little dialogue and a ill-advised catalog of silly facial expressions.

Exact opposite for me. I hated it for the first half, then really started to enjoy it. I still can't say why, because there isn't a single likeable character and a story that goes mostly nowhere. Maybe it's just to hate the fuck out of the guilty remnant.

That's what I imagine they wanted us to think, and then the ending where Nora was there with the baby instead of Laurie amd Tom was a twist. So we don't know where they went.

Laurie was annoying all season, but I became a bit more sympathetic to her after knowing she lost the baby. But holy fuck could Liv Tyler's character have been any more annoying? She somehow became MORE annoying after joining the klan and shutting her obnoxious mouth.

Ditto to this. Last two episodes were great.

Wait, so the son just left that baby on his dad's porch and took off to find his mom? WTF?

Yeah they definitely left that open to interpretation.

I also don't think Nora wrote a suicide letter, it looked more like she was just planning on getting out of town for good.

Same here. Was definitely part of Team Hate, but the series did eventually win me over.

Finished the last 3 episodes yesterday.

Some really good episodes and some really strange episodes in the 1st season.

The ending is definitely left open for interpretation and I think could have served as a series finale should it not have gotten renewed.

I really enjoyed episode 9, which was a flashback episode prior to the incident and IMO helped give some more meat to the characters. At least Amy Brenneman finally spoke.

This series is definitely not for everyone. I'll be back for season 2 next year.

She pretty much said she was too much of a coward to end it all(kill herself) but she still needed to move on. So yeah, it would seem she was leaving...will the baby make her stay? Who knows....I hope so since she is on of the best things about The Leftovers.

I liked Nora. Carrie Coon played her really well. Her sex scene with Kevin in episode 7 or 8 was also one of the highlights from the season. :D

Yeah, I think the Nora-centered episode (at the convention at the hotel) was the best of the season.

Re: The Leftovers (S1E10) -- Season Finale -- "The Prodigal Son Returns" -- 9/07/14

The season was a mixed bag. Frustrating, decent, annoying, good, interesting, boring... just all over the place from episode to episode, and even within the episodes.

They really need to stop playing that piano piece so much - it's trying too hard to force sadness, but comes across as whiny.

I remember the book ending with Nora finding the kid at Kevin's house. I don't remember the fires at the houses with Jill being trapped in one of them though.

Yeah, out of everything that happened this season, that got the biggest "wtf?" out of me.

It actually made sense to me.

1. The Baby isn't his.
2. He realized a while back Wayne was full of shit and banging the girl he liked.
3. Laurie is his biological Mother.
4. They both had abandoned the family once before.
