Don Pardo Dead at 96

Windom originally posted it in the SNL season finale thread. TV Line has confirmed he passed away today.

Veteran television and radio announcer Dominick “Don” Pardo, best known as the voice of Saturday Night Live, has died. He was 96.

Pardo passed away Monday evening, an NBC rep confirms to TVLine.

Pardo retired from NBC in 2004, but continued to provide the introductions for SNL — most recently, pre-recording them from his home in Arizona. He had only missed one season of SNL — the show’s seventh — giving him a longer tenure than even Lorne Michaels (who stepped away for five seasons).

“I can’t imagine the show without [Don],” Michaels once said, “and as long as he’s there, I stay young.”

Pardo — a 2010 Television Hall of Fame inductee — also lent his voice to game shows The Price Is Right, Jackpot and Jeopardy! He and iconic entertainer Bob Hope were the only two people to have lifetime contracts with NBC.

Great article on his career. 7 decades at NBC? Wow! I bet he saw some interesting things in his years working for SNL.

Pre-SNL, he was the voice that broke news of the Kennedy assassination for NBC.

Wow, it just won't be the same. I can't help but wonder who will replace him.

Darrell Hammond has filled in for a few times (I think) and could do a great job replacing (or mimicking) the legend that was Don Pardo. :rip:

Very sad. A wonderful voice, a wonderful life.

Will SNL do a tribute to him on its next show? Or are they doing repeats this summer?

Re: Don Pardo Dead at 96

SNL never does new shows during the Summer.

The season premiere is in Sept

Sucks he won't be part of the 40th Anniversary Season.

It would be nice if they brought back as many past cast members as possible for a tribute show on their season opener.

Brian Williams did a great tribute.

New York Times obit:

Plus this info, in answer to my earlier question:

Mr. Michaels said it was too soon to make a decision on a successor to Mr. Pardo. But he said “Saturday Night Live” would surely present a tribute to him in the coming season.
