I think three seasons feels about right. They could do an entire season in anther time period and two in the present.

Well, they could get crazy with it, like they did with Army of Darkness and have Ash go to other, countries, time periods or dimensions or something. The possibilities are almost endless. But still, this isn't the type of show that needs to go on for more than 4 or 5 seasons.

Geez, guess I'm in the minority here...
Lots of the humor felt forced and corny. Ash seems like too much of a buffoon, whereas in the film series he strode that line a bit more evenly. None of the supporting characters did anything for me, especially the dumb chick who works with Ash and Pedro. And the black chick detective seems like she's on another show entirely.
And the CGI flat-out sucked.
After watching ED2 and AoD yesterday, I went straight into this and was only mildly amused. I've heard Raimi's pilot is loads better than the not-directed-by-Raimi second episode. Not a good sign.
I'll keep tuning in and hoping it gets better, but so far I'm not overly impressed.

There was no CGI with the demons and many other elements. Raimi used practical effects like in the movies. The showrunner said this on one of the Starz featurettes. It's supposed to give it a B movie look.

Are you kidding? When the old lady's head blows up, and in a couple other scenes, it was obviously CGI. And bad CGI. I noticed some nice practical FX there, too, but big moments were done with CG.

That seems unlikely, Anchor Bay doesn't have the rights to AOD. That's why there's no S-Mart, metal hand or reverences to his most recent adventure.

CGI blood was baaaaaaad.
They really have made Ash a big loser dork, eh? I mean, he always sort of has been, but damn.
Still.... good. It's Ash... vs Deadites... I mean, fuck.

Well, Ash is 57-58 years old and really hasn't made much of his life from 30+ years ago. I think Ash is supposed to be one of those lovable losers.
I stand corrected on my comment about the CGI, I just read they did use some. But, as Deftones said, it's supposed to look cheesy like the old movies.
I did watch the movies again prior to watching the premiere on Friday. I think it's hilarious how there's really no continuity between all 3 movies except for Ash. At the end of Army of Darkness, Ash took those 6 drops and then overslept a few hundred years when civilization was already destroyed. Evil Dead 2 and even Army of Darkness forgot that Ash came to the cabin with a few friends besides Linda. But, in this episode, Ash made reference to his "friends" and "girlfriend" from that fateful night in the flashback.

At this point, Ash is just Bruce Campbell kicking ass? No? I mean. ED1 Ash is a regular guy in a event he is totally overwhelmed with. ED2 Ash is a guy pushed to brink in some many things. ED3 Ash is just a smarmy prick. Seems like this new Ash is just Bruce Campbell amplified.

He was always that way. But as a young stud it came off as cooler than it does when its coming from a 50 yr old. Sure his job stinks, but hes still getting high and banging random chicks in the bathroom he met 5 minutes ago. Living the dream.

Anyway, everything else about this episode rocked. The lighting, the camera work, the dialogue, the humor. Nobody films movies like Raimi. People try to ape his style and always fail or look like a pale imitation. He really has a style all his own that no one can copy very well.
I would love to see some cameos from some of the original actors from the first three movies. They could throw them in completely different roles since they all would look very different by this time.

I'm definitely still going to watch, but like you said, if this is supposed to be the best episode, that doesn't make me feel too good.

Regardless it sounds like I might want to give this a miss. I enjoy clueless Ash from Evil Dead and even slightly doofy, clumsy Ash from Evil Dead 2. But I really hate d-bag Three Stooges Ash from Army of Darkness, and from what I'm picking up in this forum the series is a lot closer to this than Evil Dead 1 or 2.
