The Quest (Fantasy/Reality series) July 31st ABC

This could either be really cool or really lame

I've been looking forward to this since it was announced. I love the concept. The promos haven't offered any details as to how the comps will work and what the ultimate prize will be... at least the ones I've seen.

It's a cool idea, but I'm curious how immersive it can truly be with cameras, boom mics, and production personnel everywhere. It reminds me of last year's murder mystery reality show Whodunnit, where the eliminated contestants had to pretend to be dead bodies and the other contestants had to play along.

This gives me the same vibe as that pirate reality show which didn't even get the balance of its episodes aired after it was cancelled early/mid season. That being said, I will be watching.

Re: The Quest (Fantasy/Reality series) July 31st ABC

I liked it. I love that it follows a plot and totally immerses the players into the experience. Some of the actors playing characters in EverRealm could use some more acting classes. Love the guy who is in charge of their training, though. He's a perfect fit. The right one went home. She gave really poor directions in the team challenge.

I'm glad they chose nerds that are into fantasy as the contestants. They still haven't said what the ultimate hero's prize will be (unless I missed that), but I'm assuming it will be a large amount of cash.

I wanted to like it as I think this idea could be the core of an entirely new type of reality show. The execution was somewhat weak and the cast was all over the place. I am going to give it one more episode to move me.

Taken from an interview done with a couple of the producers of the show - http://www.realityblurred.com/realit...behind-scenes/

How Sir Ansgar was chosen - “He was the hardest role to cast,” Rob Eric said, since he plays a central role. While Eric found Peter Windhofer immediately, the process of going back and forth with the network took time, and after casting in places from Germany to London, they ended up hiring him the day before on location pre-production started. “He was meant to be Ansgar.” Overall, Doganieri said the actors loved the combination of scripted storytelling and improvisation: “Sometimes actors are not sure about reality television; these actors loved this.”

LB - You know what they say when people assume...

No prize? - “We debated it. I was a fan of a prize because I’m a crass commercialist,” Fleming joked. But because the story and its conclusion occurs in a fictional universe, “We really couldn’t figure out what the prize was. Do you give them a bucket of gold? Do you give them a car? It was so weird.” Rob Eric said the experience was enough for the contestants - “You spend your entire life wanting to live a fairy tale, you spend your whole life wanting to be a hero and to rise above … that’s what they cared about,” he said. “It was prize enough.”

LB - sigh, I would have at least gave them something - maybe a part in the second season? - which they started casting people for at the recent San Diego Comic-Con.

I thought it was ok - will stick around because I like the competition part. For anyone on the fence, watch the next two episodes or so before deciding to bail, the show is supposed to get better.

Or they could give them something that fits in with the concept. Maybe personalize it for the contestant and have them choose a prize from a list of things you would find in that world.

It could be a suit of armor, a horse (the horse trainer would probably love that one), a medieval wardrobe, etc.; your suggestion of having the hero come back for another season would also be great.

The world they established was pretty cool, but the challenges were a bit ho-hum for the setting. They felt a bit like Survivor rejects.

They could even give them the Sunspear once assembled.

Otherwise, we enjoyed the show. I liked the players pondering climbing out of the courtyard and wonder whether the producers would have to chase them back in if they had ...

By the way - did they build that castle or borrow one?

The castle is a real one. The show is filmed in Austria.

It's a fun show but I could never be on it and keep a straight face. I would laugh so hard at the Ye Olden Times dialogue.

I enjoyed last night's episode. It ended with a surprise that fit into the 'story' aspect of this series.

There has to be a bad guy working within the castle. I have a feeling that it's not the obvious choice.

I agree that would be a nice prize for the winner. Yes, its a real castle.

Where it was filmed? - Kreuzenstein Castle is a privately owned castle in Austria, north of Vienna, which previously served as a filming location for Nicolas Cage’s Season of the Witch. The production considered 1,500 different castles; some were just facades, while others had roads or businesses adjacent to them.

This location worked in part because it was surrounded by 70 acres of woods. Because there was no electricity or running water, nor any other structures on the property, Doganieri said “we had this container village” built nearby for production - it had air conditioning, electricity, catering, and everything else the producers needed.

"Did you hear he called me Lady?" - from the Queen was hilarious. I actually laughed too hard.

I wonder what would have happened if someone shouted out "don't drink the wine, it's poisoned" before the queen drank it

Re: The Quest (Fantasy/Reality series) July 31st ABC

This must be doing very poorly in the ratings. Last week was 2 hours and looking ahead in the program guide, it's 2 hours again this week and next. That was as far out as I could check.

I'm still enjoying it. It would be a dream experience for almost any fantasy fan.

Re: The Quest (Fantasy/Reality series) July 31st ABC

Last week was two hours? I only recorded and watched one hour. The lone/last episode was the Battle Dome one - the fourth episode of ten episodes that are supposed to be shown. I know that due to low ratings they are going to burn the rest of the episodes off in two hour time slots - 8:00 pm ET-10:00 pm ET - for the next three weeks - August 28, September 4 and September 11.

Heres a link to the doubling up on the episodes as well as some ratings numbers -
http://www.realityblurred.com/realit...uble-episodes/

My local ABC station here in Buffalo, NY was supposed to have shown the Bills-Lions pre-season finale but since it didn't sellout in time, its blacked out and we will get our regular scheduled Thursday Night programs - 7:00 pm ET-11:00 pm ET. (Extra, Access Hollywood, The Quest and for this week - Wildest Commercials. Next week an episode of Shark Tank is being shown - 10:00 pm ET-11:00 pm ET.)

Probably a good thing the game didn't sellout as I doubt the local ABC station here would have showed the episodes later in the wee hours of Friday morning or burned them off sometime on the weekend. Most people would have had to go online to ABC.com to watch them.

Re: The Quest (Fantasy/Reality series) July 31st ABC

I could have sworn it was 2 hours... but I must have been wrong. It was the Battle Dome episode and there are still 8 paladins left.

Christian keeps sliding by. They should have sent him home when he went before the fates for the third time. He's so full of himself and doesn't care about the other contestants. There's not a cash prize, so that should take the pressure off and let everyone just enjoy the experience.

Thanks for the info.

It keeps getting pre-empted by preseason NFL football in many markets.
