Halt and Catch Fire -- Series Premiere -- "I/O" -- 6/1/14
Posting this thread because AMC has it up to stream until the actual premiere date

Re: Halt and Catch Fire -- Series Premiere -- "I/O" -- 6/1/14
Thanks, looking forward to this one. Watched it. The prologue(?) was terribly cliche and I was afraid this was going to be a really bad modern interpretation, but it settled in nicely. I'm hooked.

This looks like it could be good to me. Only thing that makes me skeptical is that it's on AMC. I have the series set up for a series recording on my DVR though.

Re: Halt and Catch Fire -- Series Premiere -- "I/O" -- 6/1/14
It started out a little slow, but it picked up in the second half and ended up being a pretty good first episode. I think it really caught steam when Joe recruited Gordon and eventually hooked in Cameron to their team.
I did think the family tension with Gordon and his wife and her eventually changing her mind was a little clichéd. I think the premise for this series is perfect for a 10-13 episode format. Being a period drama set in the 80s, I don't think this will catch on right away. It's really a niche show. I see some similarities to the HBO show Silicon Valley. |
Re: Halt and Catch Fire -- Series Premiere -- "I/O" -- 6/1/14
I really liked it. Yes, some cliches were heavy up front to lay the groundwork, but I'm interested to see where it goes over the season. Quite the "Some Kind of Wonderful" vibe from the (also quite clichéd) female computer gal.

Re: Halt and Catch Fire -- Series Premiere -- "I/O" -- 6/1/14
Having worked in the PC business in those days, I'm interested to see how many things they get right (or wrong). I will say, to my chagrin, that I never saw any computer gals who looked like that in the early 80's.

Re: Halt and Catch Fire -- Series Premiere -- "I/O" -- 6/1/14
This one set a new personal record. I gave up on it at the 5:27 minute mark, when the opening credits hit. That was a terrible opening scene for I guess is supposed to be some kind of period drama set in the computer industry.
Any showrunner that would allow such a trite opening scene like that is not worth wasting my time. |

Pretty disappointing ratings. 1.2M viewers. Worst than TURN's premiere. |

I was kind of bored by it, 15 minutes in I flipped over to Red 2 on HBO.

Re: Halt and Catch Fire -- Series Premiere -- "I/O" -- 6/1/14
With those numbers I hope the end of the season gets us somewhere satisfying and that AMC does more successfully with the few chances they have left to build a new generation of prestige drama.
As much as I love The Shield and Nip/Tuck, what really cemented FX as a place I can trust for drama was the success of Sons of Anarchy and Justified. |
Re: Halt and Catch Fire -- Series Premiere -- "I/O" -- 6/1/14
I really liked it, the story tapped into the real nitty-gritty part of computing, the actual hardware that makes it all happen. I hope it finds an audience because the storyline is telling the story in a way that hasn't been told as well since Pirates of Silicon Valley.

Re: Halt and Catch Fire -- Series Premiere -- "I/O" -- 6/1/14
I really liked it too, but I wonder how big the audience for this type of show could be? I can't see my parents watching something like this. They'd be lost when it comes to the technical stuff.

I enjoyed it by the time the episode was over. I'll keep watching for now.

Re: Halt and Catch Fire -- Series Premiere -- "I/O" -- 6/1/14
I've been looking forward to this show mainly because it's about a history I've long being interested in, but also because of the added bonus that they filmed some scenes for it in the building I work in.
I didn't take any photos while they were filming (they were watching out for people doing that), but I took these 2 pictures after they were done and workers were tearing down the set: http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps15f0da9d.jpg http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps4736e21c.jpg And it was also cool to see Atlanta's famous Plaza Theatre (link) make a cameo as the movie theater showing "Return of the Jedi" within the episode. http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/o...pse7e8b09f.jpg |

Finally got around to watching this yesterday. I liked it. Yeah, was cliched at times, but I was entertained and liked the build up to the final scene. Curious to see where they go with this so I plan on sticking around.

Re: Halt and Catch Fire -- Series Premiere -- "I/O" -- 6/1/14
I think this probably suffers from the same problem The Americans had for me -- shows about the 70s and back are fine because they are about times I don't remember. The first memories I have associated with dates come from 1981. It's just a little tough for me to take the material. To me, the geopolitics of the 80s are a lot more fatiguing than the tech revolution is.

Not sure where this show goes for ten episodes.
I did love the use of Boz Scaggs though. |

I did love the use of Boz Scaggs though. I was thinking the same thing about ten episodes. This episode was good but I sense some fluff ahead. I loved the look on Joe's face as he realized they were being raided. |
Re: Halt and Catch Fire -- Series Premiere -- "I/O" -- 6/1/14
Just watched the pilot and thought it was pretty good. I am not a computer geek so alot of this stuff went right over my head, but I grew up in the 80's so I can relate to stuff like 'Speak & Spell' and 'Return of the Jedi' being in the movie theaters. Since I am not a computer nerd, I still don't know if I will stick with it because I'm not sure how much the topic will interest me.
