I noticed that too in the past. I remember watching the E! True Hollywood Story of Cheers and it was pointed out that the show started off with low ratings and some bad critic reviews and evolved in time. In recent years, the one show that I think was give a chance to evolve into a great show was Parks and Rec. The first season wasn't great, but NBC gave it chance and it improved in the second season.

TV shows now are so expensive to make. They need quick results 9 times out of 10. Most TV shows don't even make money after 1 airing. |
Re: Just a thought about why so many New Shows got Cancelled
As more and more streaming/on-demand services pop up the concept of watching Live TV is becoming extinct. The last time i watched something live was the season 9 premiere of 24. It reminded me of why i stopped watching Live TV. It's time for Networks to stop living in the past and adapt. HULU is nice but nowhere near perfection. Offer the entire season/seasons of shows and stream the same night a new episode airs. Give me an option for a higher subscription rate to get rid of ads or minimize them. Have a new set of PILOTS to shop around? Why not put them up on the streaming service and let the viewers vote on which shows they like the most. There's so much more potential in streaming instead of Live TV.

Re: Just a thought about why so many New Shows got Cancelled
The DVR and rise of back catalog streaming has changed the entire game for television. There is too much competition now to allow a struggling show to grow an audience unless there are good indicators it can be quickly salvaged.
Haven become a great show only after its poor first season, but I don't think any network other than SyFy would have kept it around longer than one season. Their economics dictate at a minimum of two seasons, they can't play the cancellation game as much as the richer networks. |

Yeah I agree with this somewhat. "Binge" watching shows seems to be the trend now days and I think a lot of people will just wait until something is on Netflix or saved up on their DVR or whatever and burn through a show fast, probably after it's been on for a while and has decent word of mouth and whatnot. So the ratings may not be as strong for some shows because people watch them later.

I recall there was a show on ABC that starred Heather Graham that got pulled after an episode or two. |
Re: Just a thought about why so many New Shows got Cancelled
I take back that comment. I just remembered how terrible "DADS" was after viewing *ONE* episode, and how I wish it would be canceled.

Re: Just a thought about why so many New Shows got Cancelled
Like said, just too many shows, and it's unrealistic for networks to think they can get the amount of viewership they think they can. I always find it ridiculous when a new show is put up against a breadwinner and it gets cancelled due to low ratings.
I think in the next 10 years networks wont be the ones with the big shows. Streaming is where it will be and I think you can get more bang for the buck in advertising that will allow shows to stick around longer. |

Re: Just a thought about why so many New Shows got Cancelled
This is only conjecture, but at least it makes sense to me. I believe the networks have some type of set goals in mind for any new show starting out. Such as 15 M and 5.0 share as being a success beyond their wildest dreams, 8-9M or 3.0 share as a modest success and what they are shooting for. If a show debuts way below the Mendoza line, to the tune of 4 M and 0.9 shares, then it's a DOA show that they will pull the plug on immediately. Shows that bombed out of the gate probably does not even come close to their minimalist expectations and thus gets the axe within a few episodes.

Re: Just a thought about why so many New Shows got Cancelled
In the olden days, There were fewer shows and a 22 - 26 episode season was standard. They were already in the can for that many episodes so they were more committed to keeping them around. Plus there were fewer to take it's place. With the current 6 - 13 episode "trials" it's pretty easy to toss it to the curb.
