I am surprised at how many people think the Bert thing was out of line. It sounds like it's more people not wanting to believe his character would do something like that. I think it was very much in character for the time as others have stated.

Running that ad in the earlier season didn't eradicate the racism of the people of the time. There are different subtleties of racism and I think especially of that time people were ignorant that they were sometimes committing it. I don't think it changes Bert's character or motives at all but instead drives home the point that racism can take many forms no matter how well intentioned or justified people think it is.

I think MikahC's response earlier in this thread was really spot on.

Part of the difficulty in righting wrongs is that you're often addressing wrongs you have little to do with creating. Neither Bert nor that firm are responsible for prevailing racial attitudes. Bert isn't saying he doesn't want to see a black lady up front because he doesn't want to see black ladies. But he's right to worry that his clients (and/or potential clients) might not. That's just being a practical businessman and Bert is that (which is why he didn't care who Don was).

Unfortunately, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. The episode did a good job of showing a type of oppression/harassment of the black women pretty much only because of their skin color, even though there was no active intent by those involved to do so. And that's real racism (affecting their ability to do their job and potentially earn a living). Not the "racism" of a random person calling someone the N-word but otherwise having no ability to affect that person's life.

IMO, people confuse prejudice, bigotry, etc. with racism all the time, and I think this show got it right. It's not cool if Archie Bunker calls someone the N word or has other "racist" opinions and language, but the real impact is minimal in this day and age. I'd suspect it's far more important to minorities if they walked into his bar to apply for a job while having the ability to do a job but weren't given a fair opportunity to do it. IMO, that matters far more.

This post wins the thread.

Does anyone know what grade in school Sally is supposed to be in?

Is she a freshman in high school now?

She's still too young, dude.

A good post from Ken Levine (writer on Cheers, MASH) on how to approach this season:

Very insightful post. I too was surprised by Bert complaining about Dawn being out front, but the more I think about it, your points are correct. I think because I like Bert I immediately think of this being "out of character", the same response we often have in real life instead of admitting your family member/friend said or did the wrong thing.

I loved Peggy's calendar, "Feb 14th, masturbate morosely."

Great episode for Sally. I was touched when she told Don she loved him, but I couldn't believe she didn't check the slot on the phone to see if it spit out her dime.

As usual, I enjoyed every minute of this episode.

It sounded like one Sally's roommates said 'Fuck' but it got muted.

So did Shirley just forget to wear pants to work?

I didn't mean it THAT way. I just wondered if they advanced her character's age to move the story along over the seasons.

Sally attends Miss Porter's School. She would be 14, nearly 15, at the time of the most recent episode, if the Mad Men wiki is to be believed.

Sally's eyebrows are an homage to Eugene Levy, whats going on there?

So I guess Dawn got the personell job?

That bugged me too. Maybe that was the style? Otherwise I guess Betty hasn't been able to teach her how to tweeze yet.

I loved the exchange between Shirley and Dawn (especially them calling each other by the wrong name).

Sally's "I love you" was a nice touch.

That's right. She tuned 6 in the spring of 1960 (first season). She's now almost 15.

The show is terrible. Terrible. If I hadn't invested all the time I have, I would have dumped it already.

I enjoyed the episode. The characters are acting out of character because they are all miserable without Don there and the office just isn't the same.

I didn't see them acting out of character. I like Peggy, but she was showing off her petty side.
