Silicon Valley -- New HBO series -- Season 1 Thread -- premieres 4/06/14

Attending an elaborate launch party, Richard (Thomas Middleditch) and his computer programmer friends - Big Head (Josh Brener), Dinesh (Kumail Nanjiani) and Gilfoyle (Martin Starr) - dream of making it big. Instead, they're living in the communal Hacker Hostel owned by former programmer Erlich (T.J. Miller), who gets to claim ten percent of anything they invent there. When it becomes clear that Richard has developed a powerful compression algorithm for his website, Pied Piper, he finds himself courted by Gavin Belson (Matt Ross), his egomaniacal corporate boss, who offers a $10 million buyout by his firm, Hooli. But Richard holds back when well-known investor Peter Gregory (Christopher Evan Welch) makes a counteroffer. I liked it. Not LOL funny by any means, but it's a good satire about the geeks who built Silicon Valley.
I think Mike Judge does a good job creating satires like this and Office Space. I think he got so much of it right on the money here. The characters all seem to epitomize "Geek" and computer nerds. :thumbsup: It's only 8 episodes, so I think this should be a nice 30 minute show for Sundays. That girl Monica who chatted with Richard at the end was also pretty cute. |

Boring. I'm out. Don't care if it's only 8 episodes, just because it is doesn't mean you have to watch them all :thumbsup:

I have to be honest guys...I watched the first 10 minutes or so of this, and didn't laugh once. I was hoping to stay up and see VEEP, but after a while, I was just like, "I'll watch VEEP later in the week."
Not sure if it got better in the second half, but what I saw was just awful...not just unfunny writing, but poor acting as well -- you could tell half the cast was just trying to remember their over-written dialogue when performing it. :( |

I caught this last night after the GoT season 4 premier. I hadn't heard about it before, but I was hooked like 5 minutes in. Set up a season pass for my DVR to record it.

I think it's an interesting topic and am curious to see where it goes. Wasn't LOL funny, but it doesn't need to be. I'll stick around since it's not much of a commitment and is sandwiched between GoT and Veep which I watch anyway.

It got me to laugh a few times, not bad for a pilot. All of the main characters are very likable, i'm in for the season.

I liked this comedy, though it has so many in-jokes from Silicon Valley culture that I doubt middle America will find it funny. This is for fans of Michael Lewis and the like.

Yeah, this failed to catch fire for me as well. Only part I really kind of liked was the Andy Daly part, and I'll grant you that was a predictable punchline.

As someone who's been in three failed tech startups, I thought this show really nailed the satire. Especially the part about "saving the world." We said that all the time, and even sort of believed it. Sometimes the show was too true to be funny, but I'll stick around.

I liked it as I will stick with it for the 8 episodes. It wasn't laugh out funny, but I don't know if it is supposed to be as I think the story is just as interesting. I just hope the characters dont turn into 'stereotype' nerds like Big Bang Theory where every word out of their mouth is about Star Wars and Star Trek, and they are essentially over-the-top nerds.

Since the crux of this is a new compression algorithm I decided to look up Phil Katz to see if ZIP (which is so prevalent that you've probably used it today whether you know it or not) made him rich. I guess it did, but what a sad life that guy led...dead at 37 due to alcoholism. :(
