I love me some Eddie Vedder as much as anyone else, but it's still almost shocking to me that the Foos weren't the last musical guest.
Vedder and Letterman seemed to get kind of close over the years, but I'd read that Eddie actually has some kind of personal connection with Fallon and that he'd likely give Fallon first dibs at booking him and PJ over the last few years.
The Foos were always on team Letterman.

Here's Kimmel's tribute in Time...

It made me re-watch the Nastassja Kinski interview from 1982 on youtube. What a weird wonderful thing that was.

This whole thing is a serious downer for me.
I've been watching since the first NBC show.
This is depressing to see.....

I agree. The idea that whole thing was his conception just shows that being a musical virtuoso does not mean you are an entertainment genius. Painful to watch.

For the record, I think Dave is both right and wrong on Everybody Loves Raymond. The success of the show is due to Ray, the cast, the writers, and the production team, but he gave Ray an opportunity, and the Letterman cache helped keep the show on the air in the first season when it struggled to find an audience.

Wouldn't it make some sense to bump The Late Late Show up to an hour earlier and run repeated shows after that until Colbert? They'd probably get more people watching TLLS at that hour who don't normally stay up that late. Or would they be too afraid to put it against Fallon, Kimmel & O'Brien?

Norm MacDonald breaking down and crying was unexpected.

Completely unexpected. I can’t say I’ve ever seen him serious. I read somewhere that Norm’s performance was the last stand-up performance on Letterman. With three shows left that doesn’t sound like a stretch.

Wow, I'd already seen clips of it on youtube and twitter and I still lost it when Norm began to choke up.
The Germany against the world jokes had me cracking up, though. "What do you think you are, Mars or something?"
And "I is short for I and D is short for Dentification."

I haven't watched much Letterman for years, but with Jay retiring and now Dave, it's truly the end of an era. I just barely remember Carson, so I grew up watching these guys pretty much from the beginning (born in 83)...now I feel old.
