I probably would have checked out the show regardless as I like the genre and generally think HBO shows are high quality but Harrelson and McConaughey definitely made me want to watch it more. I'd like seeing who else they could get personally.

I can see it now

True Detective Season 2, starring Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino in what critics are calling "Their only relevant roles in years"

I wouldn't be surprised if they did get people of that caliber. Pacino has worked with HBO before... De Niro is working with them now I believe; taking of the role Gandolfini was going to do.

I doubt they'd go that far, but I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled in Tommy Lee Jones for S2. They can pair him up with, I dunno, Harrison Ford.

Making Cohle the actual perpetrator is too dumb for this show by now. Anyone else feel that in the modern-day narratives, Cohle is once again (deep) undercover and that the higher ups are his suspects, who are trying to somehow frame him? Just not sure if Hart is aware of Cohle's operation or not.

I said something similar earlier that either someone higher up in his department is involved in the murders or knows who is. I honestly don't think Rust or Marty are involved in the killings. Seems like a route that's too cliche for a show of this caliber to take.

It’s my job to be able to write to an actor’s skill, but Matthew has such a total understanding of the character that he just possessed it in every way you could hope.”

I think he's been working on his own. He was testing the detectives to see what they knew and when he found out that they thought he was the killer, that's when he realized they were wasting his time. He probably has tons of evidence and he doesn't want to share it with these guys because he's way beyond where they are. But I do agree that making Cohle involved would be really dumb.

"once he starts drinking, anything he says in that room is inadmissable"

Nic Pizzolatto - True Detective Season 1: Inside the Episode #5 (HBO)

Seeing Cohle in the 1995/2002 scenes, I agree I just don't see it. If anything, they can only hint that he was responsible for the 2012 murder. I don't think that will be the case though, and I think you're assessment is more accurate. Then again, he did seem awfully fascinated by the twig sculptures in the school, and the someone who told him "the world is a flat circle" was LeDoux.

I think this was the best episode so far. Many aspects of it made the overall story kick into high gear.

People still thinking Rust is the murderer? I thought this episode made it abundantly clear that a) he's still investigating the case and b) much of the "persona" he's presented for the modern-day detectives is an act.

Ummmmmmm. Rust IS Cohle..

MM = Rust Cohle
WH = Martin (Marty) Hart

I thought you may have had the character names mixed up, based on your post on page 1, but this confirms it.

That ending scene where Rust is walking through the school was just incredibly creepy.

For as much love as the last episode got, I'm with you in thinking this was the best episode. This was the episode that not only gave us a TON of more great character stuff, but this is also the ep that really roped me in and has me actually interested in the case.
