Looking (HBO) - Series Thread

https://scontent-a-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/...68550516_n.jpg

(from HBO's press release, October 2013) LOOKING debuts SUNDAY, JAN. 19 (10:30-11:00 p.m.) on HBO. The series revolves around three friends in San Francisco who explore the fun and sometimes overwhelming options available to a new generation of gay men. Created by Michael Lannan and executive produced by Andrew Haigh ("Weekend") and Sarah Condon ("Bored to Death"), the show stars Jonathan Groff, Frankie J. Alvarez and Murray Bartlett. Special guest stars include Russell Tovey and Scott Bakula.

After a park-cruising experiment is derailed by a phone call, 29-year-old video-game designer Patrick (Jonathan Groff) meets up with his best friends, roommate Agustín (Frankie J. Alvarez), 31, and Dom (Murray Bartlett), 39, to discuss the impending wedding of his ex. The next morning, Agustín agrees to move in with his boyfriend, Frank (O-T Fagbenle), in Oakland, though he wonders if domesticating is the right move. Dom, who's been a waiter at the same restaurant for years, tells his roommate, Doris (Lauren Weedman), that he's thinking of reconnecting with old flame Ethan (Derek Ray), who has a successful real-estate career. Later, Patrick meets up with OkCupid date Benjamin (Matt Wilkas); after the date goes south, Patrick is chatted up on the Muni by Richie (Raúl Castillo), a cute barber who also works the door at a Latin drag club in the Mission.

No thank you.

One of the few HBO show I will not be giving a chance.

Oh god! Gay people! Run!

I wasn't that interested in this until I found out that Andrew Haigh was involved. I liked the first episode but I don't think it was a very good pilot.

Maybe that's how you think. But I think "Meh no thank you".

The trailer for this made it look thoroughly uninteresting. If it gets good buzz, I'll check it out via HBO Go, but otherwise, I'll pass.

I liked it - Living in SF, I like to see how the city is portrayed, it was all shot here. Will be interested to see Russel Tovey's character show up.

First ep was a good intro to the characters, so far my fave is the waiter at Zuni

I'm sure this show has an audience out there, but I'm not one of them. It's just a subject that I have zero interest in. I've also never seen an episode of The Vampire Diaries or Beauty And The Beast either.

About the only thing I'd be interested in seeing would be if this exchange happened between Scott Bakula's character and someone else:

Guy: "I'm sorry, but I got tested and it turns out I have HIV"
Scott Bakula character: "Oh boy"

It's exec produced by Andrew Haigh, who made one of the finest films of 2011. He directed the pilot and he's writing a few episodes , too. I'd check it out.

I was really hoping against hope that the posters here wouldn't act like jackasses just because this is a show centered around gay men. How stupid of me.

Ok, I will. I've heard of Greek Pete but never seen it, so Haigh's name didn't make this must-see for me.

Did the pilot match your expectations in terms of quality?

I liked it. The script wasn't anything special but the direction was great. I'm looking forward to seeing where the show goes.

Typical response these days as you guys think people are bigots because they dismiss shows like this. I would say 'No Thank You' to Sex in the City when it was on HBO, does that make me a sexist? I thought Dexter and True Blood were too weird for my tastes, do you have a problem with that?

In fairness, I've been tempted to reply a few times, "We get it, you're definitely positively absolutely not gay, OK," but I really haven't seen any responses in the thread that fall into the category of "jackasses".

When people post they're not going to watch something, I can't help but wonder why. Surely there are many shows any given person doesn't watch. Why does a given show deserve the special, "I'm not watching," treatment? Subject matter? Talent involved? Of course there could be other reasons it's notable as well, but it does invite the question.

Personally, I don't plan on watching the show, but I didn't feel any need to announce that fact. But I'll continue to read the thread(s) as it wouldn't be the first time I didn't think I'd have any interest in something but once I got into the right frame of mind and found out it was a quality product, I took the plunge. It took me 3 tries to get into breaking bad, a show which now ranks as one of my favorite ever. I kept coming back because I kept hearing how good it is. If I get enough positive feedback for Looking, I'll give it a try regardless of my discomfort with the subject matter. Besides, sometimes discomfort is a necessary of growth.

No, we think you're bigots because you refer to us as "you guys"

I knew you would take it that way, as I wasn't referring to 'you guys' as gay (Cause I don't know who is gay here or I really don't care). I was referring to you guys as the PC Police. ;)

Just to let you know before you stereotype me, that I am pro-gay marriage and pro-gay rights, but I'm still not interested in this show the same way I'm not into the show 'Girls' either.

The nudity in this couldn't be any worse than Girls - I'll give it a shot.

Mod note: Please keep the discussion of the thread to talk ABOUT the show. Not why you aren't watching it.

Actually I think the OP was referring to 'Weekend' which was barely released in the US but is available on Netflix.

I think much of the acclaim it got was because it doesn't really focus on having eye-candy and sex scenes that are one step short of being porno like a lot of gay themed shows (Queer as Folk). Instead it focuses on the actual feelings and relationships between the characters just like any other film showing a heterosexual couple.

In this sense its groundbreaking, at least for gay cinema. Brokeback Mountain would have been a good example of this if it didn't deal with a character being in the closet and ending up dying for being gay. In the first generation of gay cinema those were the subjects of 90 percent of what you found. But in 2014 those themes are no longer central to the lives of 90 percent of the gay population.

It's funny to see the previous posts from people, who I'm assuming are straight, discussing whether they don't want to watch something because its gay or because the subject matter.

I think the point of the 'New' gay cinema and a show like this is to see if it connects with a heterosexual audience just because they can relate to the characters through their 'humanity'. Its one thing to get an audience because the show is about gays and the audience is gay but its quite a jump to get an audience who is straight just because its a quality project that speaks to your heart whether you are straight or gay.

I hope there are some straight people who watch this show and post their thoughts. I would definitely be interested in hearing what they think, especially if its as funny as the threads we get about every episode of 'Girls'

For anyone on the fence about checking this out, I'd say that if you loved Jonathan Groff in Frozen but felt that the flick was a little too girly, you'll get plenty of dude time with him in this. Give it a whirl.

I won't watch until I get a statement from Andrew Haigh on his feelings about murdering horny birds.
