FOX orders Backstrom to series -- Starring Rainn Wilson & Dennis Haysbert

A high profile casualty of the 2013 pilot season is getting a new lease on life.

Fox has given a 13-episode series order to Backstrom, the hour-long procedural starring Rainn Wilson that CBS passed on last May.

Based on a Swedish book series by Leif G.W. Persson and adapted for TV by Bones boss Hart Hanson, the drama (which, coincidentally, is produced by Fox’s corporate sibling Twentieth Century Fox Television) centers on Wilson’s Det. Everett Backstrom, an offensive, irascible detective, as he tries, and fails, to change his self-destructive behavior. Throughout the series, Backstrom leads his team, the Serious Crimes Unit, as they navigate Portland’s most sensitive cases.

The cast also includes Ringer‘s Kristoffer Polaha, 24‘s Dennis Haysbert, Weeds‘ Page Kennedy and Beatrice Rosen (Cuts).

“Hart Hanson and Rainn Wilson are the perfect combination of creative vision and on-screen talent to bring this one-of-a-kind character and story like Backstrom to Fox,” said Fox prez Kevin Reilly in a statement. “I’ve been in business with Hart for a long time, and not only does he have a rare gift for infusing darker themes with relatable humor, he’s one of the best showrunners out there today. Together with Rainn – who absolutely nails this role and makes it a classic Fox character – I think we’ve got something really special here.”

I wonder if the Pilot that was shot for CBS will be the same one for FOX. Interesting pickup for FOX.

I'm sure a few here will roll their eyes and say something like...."Another damn procedural about another quirky crime fighter" Deadline says that Production will begin soon. My guess is this airs in the summer.

If this helps Rainn get away from the Dwight Schrute persona, I'm all for it.

The trailer had some interesting moments. It looks like it has potential to be a decent "House" like show. Hart Hanson can do quirky in his shows.

I liked the sizzle reel when I saw it. Weird to see this picked up by Fox 8 months after CBS passed. Shame Mamie Gummer isn't sticking with it. I really liked her on Emily Owens.

I was disappointed when CBS didn't pick it up. I'm down.

He reminds me of an out-of-shape Jeff Winger here. I'll definitely check this one out.

Well, since FOX produced the pilot in the first place, I'm sure they have the rights to it. They might have to pay CBS the production costs, but I'm not sure about that.

A bit surprised they just didn't cast Hugh Laurie in the part... In any case, I'll check it out if only to see Wilson tackle a more 3-dimensional role.

I hope this doesn't get dumped in summer. They'd be smart to run it straight starting early, but wrap up before baseball schedule gets in the way.
