Supernatural -- "Bad Boys" -- 11/19/13
Synopsis:
"Bad Boys" - (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET) (Content Rating TBD) (HDTV)
YOUNG DEAN - Dean (Jensen Ackles) gets a call from an old friend named Sonny (guest star Blake Gibbons) asking for help with a ghost. Sonny runs a home for delinquent boys, and Dean was sent there for stealing food when he was younger. Sam (Jared Padalecki) is stunned he never knew this about his brother and asks for more information, but Dean dodges his questions. Another murder occurs while Sam and Dean are at the house, so they scramble to find the culprit before anyone else dies. Meanwhile, Dean looks up an old girlfriend (guest star Erin Karpluk) and recalls his time at the house. Kevin Parks directed the episode written by Adam Glass (905).

Boring filler episode. Why not make self contained episodes dealing with the main story arc. Once you start fighting angels and gods these minor monsters just don't cut it.

Maybe its because as hunters they do the big jobs angels, demons and gods, and the little jobs, ghosts, witches and vampires. It isn't called Sam and Dean Save The World, its called Supernatural. To them all jobs are big jobs.

I liked it too. It felt like a classic episode of the series. Plus it was nice to get some back story on Dean that didn't feel like some kind of lazy retcon.

The problem with this episode was that the present day stuff, which was the majority of the episode, just seemed like filler to facilitate telling the flashback story, which wasn't particularly interesting itself. I have to assume this episode was setting up something for the future. Maybe we'll see Dean actually use the "sometimes you have to put yourself first" advice. Because otherwise it didn't really show us anything that wasn't well established about the characters.
