How I Met Your Father (Hulu) - S: Hilary Duff - premieres 1/18/22
If anything I think a Barney Stinson spinoff wouldn't be bad.
We previously mentioned how CBS wanted a ‘HIMYM‘ spin-off and wouldn’t stop until all of the blood had been squeezed from the stone. Well success, CBS, because now ‘How I Met Your Father‘ is officially in pilot mode.
Described as a kindred spirit of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ telling the story from a female point of view, Dad tells a brand-new story with new characters and a new voice at its center. (Via)
Creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will be returning to write and executive produce the series alongside ‘Up All Night’ creator Emily Spivey.
What’s the reason for the quick turn around? I’m assuming some sort of witchcraft was involved. Or perhaps desperation is the driving force? I mean losing your highest rated sitcom behind ‘The Big Bang Theory’ would make me run to hills for ideas.
But will this spin-off be able to hold those kind of numbers on Mondays for CBS? The plan seems to be based around transitioning to this new group through the series finale and having them inhabit the same universe as the current ‘HIMYM‘ cast, according to Deadline. It just leaves me with a feeling of dread and visions of ‘Scrubs‘ season eight dancing in my head.
Maybe the mother is dead and this is her show. The entire plot will revolve around her possession of another woman and using a new group of friends to watch Ted from afar. Perhaps we can finally get to my post-apocalyptic ‘HIMYM’ fan fiction where Barney’s laser tag skills finally pay off. Or maybe it can be a show about bitter audience disappointment?

a barney spinoff would probably need to take place pre-marriage though. much of his funniness involved picking up random chicks, or the playbook, or bro code, or other stuff that won't work well after he's married

To their credit, Bays/Thomas seem to have a knack for casting so I expect them to pull this off fairly well. Even the shortlived Goodwin Games had an excellent cast.

This show reminds me of this quote from former Two and a Half Man producer Lee Aronsohn.
"Enough ladies. I get it. You have
periods ... we’re approaching
peak vagina on television, the
point of labia saturation,"

Watch out for a nightmare in the future when half of the actual charecters are female on tv. Then every line of dialogue will be about cracker barrels, vaginas ,menopause and flow cycles.

This is pretty legendary: Frances Ha star (and Golden Globe nominee) Greta Gerwig has signed on to play the titular "I" role in CBS's How I Met Your Mother kinda-sorta-spinoff How I Met Your Dad. Not only that, but Gerwig will also be a producer on the project and is expected to be one of the show's writers. The pilot will shoot in Los Angeles, but now insiders say that if it goes to series -- something that's very likely -- the show will film in New York City. As previously announced, the project will have completely new characters and stories, borrowing only the flashback storytelling of HIMYM. Gerwig will play Sally, a character being described by the show's producers as "a female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she's going in life." At the show's start, Sally is facing the end of her one-year marriage, turning to a close circle of friends to help with the pending breakup. Emily Spivey is exec producing the project with HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas.

Yea... I don't see this lasting. And I'm surprised someone like her would want on to a show like this.

I guess that's a semi-high profile get, but 'Francis Ha' left me 'meh'. Not in a good way: felt anachronistic to something put out by Miramax 20 years earlier.
For me, this storytelling format/payoff is played out after nine years of HIMYM, can't see myself signing up for this.

I'll give it a shot but I'm not optimistic. The thinking behind this reminds me of That 80s Show. At the same time, Parks & Recreation started off as a sort-of clone of The Office and evolved into something awesome.

The spinoff synopsis sounds nothing like something that would be called "How I met your Father". It's a shame they can't just name it something else but have to be tied down to another show.

I would rather it have been the story of one of the many crazy women that Ted dated. It's a shame that Bilson is still doing Hart of Dixie, as that angle of being the roommate of his future wife would have been an interesting POV and ties the two series together.

I think it'll have a tough time getting an audience for a few reasons. First, the finale pissed off a lot of people and they fear it'll be all for nothing. Secondly, it'll be tough to have lightning strike twice in having a good cast as well and good characters that match them well. Thirdly, the novelty has worn off for a lot of people - the concept of HIMYM was original and fresh, but now it'll just feel like a rehash with a few changes... like a movie sequel that's not needed.

I'm a huge fan of the 80's and earlier 90s Meg Ryan, but I'm still butt hurt about the finale.
But I will probably check the pilot...
