Im surprised he didn’t work in a joke about that person’s paintings of ties. I forget the person, but he did a few bits about it this year.

It was Larry Kudrow's wife:
https://www.nydailynews.com/snyde/ny...6oi-story.html
Oliver then showed multiple works by Judy that focused on shirts and ties that hang in her husband’s closet. Larry, himself, was not in the paintings.

“These aren’t so much portraits of Larry Kudlow as they are portraits of the absence of Larry Kudlow," Oliver joked. "They showcase the beauty of where Larry Kudlow isn’t and sure, that’s a beauty we can all appreciate.”

FYI: John Oliver makes an appearance in S4 of Netflix's Big Mouth.

Not sure how many political comedians I’ll keep following in the new year, but Oliver is definitely a keeper.

Is anyone else put off by the lack of masking on Mr. P.?

With what happened on the 6th I figured there would be a special episode this weekend but it looks like the shows not coming back till February. Such a missed opportunity.
I dont get why topical political comedy shows take a long break? At least make an exception once and awhile.

I think John Oliver would object the the assertion that their show is a "topical" political comedy show. From the beginning, they only typically did a "brief recap of the week" before doing a deep dive into a particular topic that was relevant, but not necessarily tied to any events that happened that week. It's only during the Trump administration, and even more specifically this past year with the various urgent debacles, that the show has had to shift to focusing on something that went down that past week. I've seen interviews with John Oliver, and he hates that Trump has basically forced his show to shift focus like that, and is looking forward to Biden, where it's unlikely that "what has Biden done now?" is going to be the topic every week.

Also, I believe that HBO set the schedule and number of shows.

There's plenty of other topical political comedy shows on right now. Colbert covers it nightly in his monologues, Seth Meyers covers it in his A Closer Look segment, The Daily Show still exists, Samantha Bee's show just came back and the other talk show hosts too.

I also watch channels on Youtube like Some More News for political humor, and Legal Eagle for legal commentary.

Oh, forgot to mention The Amber Ruffin Show. It's on Peacock, but I watch the clips on Youtube, which is easier now that her show has its own:

John Oliver casually reffered to Senators Manchin and Sinema as "Diet Republicans". 😂

Almost all of his deep dives have been about systemic issues without easy fixes. I guess maybe the Trump stories had the hope we could vote him out?

I don't watch John Oliver often, as I find him pretty unsufferable, but he did an admirable job roasting Tucker Carlson.

My son made me pause the screen here so he could find that phone number shown during the Main Story tonight and call it (as John Oliver dared the viewers to). It was totally worth it.

Very good Main Story last night. Both informative and containing a hilarious stunt that they pulled off beautifully.

Yeah, that stunt was an all-timer for this show, and that's saying something.

Even I didn't pick up on the significance of the Venus Veil spokesperson saying "This technology was developed in Germany 80 years ago".
