All new characters with the only link to HIMYM being a few settings? I'm fine with that. It could be good if they revamp the whole thing and have different characters and not just the same type of characters played by different actors. I'm not exactly hopeful but if it's good then good. If it's not then fuck it.

What would be cool is a mini-series, tv movie or the like showing the Mother's journey to meet Ted. Shit they could fit that into the current season if they really wanted to. Take a 3 or 4 episode break from the regular characters and plots and focus on what the mother has been doing for the last 8 years.

Living with a lesbian, attending Ted's first day as a professor, playing bass at weddings... you know, the usual.

97% chance it's done with our current crew walking into the bar, seeing a group of younger people sitting at "their" table, starting to try to make them move before saying "forget it, let's go somewhere else".

I'm not sure, but AfterM*A*S*H had already been mentioned, so my mind went straight to W*A*L*T*E*R. According to wikipedia, it didn't get picked up as a series, but CBS did air the pilot ... in the Eastern and Central time zones. It got preempted by the 1984 Democratic convention on the west coast.
