Re: Marvel's Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist & Defenders coming to Net

Netflix clarifies the release dates of the five Marvel series.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/01/...fter-daredevil

Netflix announced today that Daredevil will debut on April 10th, but what about the other Marvel TV series the streaming service has in the works? Daredevil of course is only the first of five new Marvel series coming to Netflix – including A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and the team-up series, The Defenders. Marvel recently revealed Jessica Jones would also debut in 2015, but a more recent write up about Netflix’s plans in USA Today made it sound like it could take longer than that, saying the plan was for the series to debut about a year apart.

Today, at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour, I asked Netflix head Ted Sarandos about these potentially conflicting reports. Regarding how long it would take for the shows to debut, he remarked, “You should think of it about as roughly a year. Some will roll in as early as eight months and others in 15 months apart, and basically what it is is we’re not trying to meet a fall programming schedule or trying to hit a grid number, so really we want to give the shows enough time.”

Sarandos added, “Jessica Jones hasn’t started production yet, so a lot happens from the first day on the set to the last day of production. So we want to give them enough room and enough time to make a great show, so I don’t want to set up a rigid timetable and deliver a show every eight months or every twelve months, but you should expect them about a year apart.”

When I followed up to ask if that meant Jessica Jones likely would not debut in 2015, Sarandos replied, “It’s too hard to say now.”

All of which is to say, don't be surprised if A.K.A. Jessica Jones doesn't debut until 2016 or, at least, until the very end of 2015.
So it's not exactly one year between each series, but it's pretty close. So it does sound like Defenders won't be until 2019 or at least fairly close to that.

I know they have talked before about potential second seasons. Specifically they have mentioned using Bullseye in the second Daredevil season. I wonder if the second seasons won't start until after the Defenders series? Waiting until 2020 is a long wait for Daredevil season 2.

Sounds like a combination of making sure each show has enough time for them to get it "right" by not putting any hard dates or deadlines on them, as well as not spreading the Marvel brass too thin in making sure that enough love is being given to these properties. I imagine not locking themselves in to a set schedule can mean if one is a hit, they're flexible in fast tracking additional seasons if necessary.

That time frame seems nuts to me. I hope they change it.

Definitely. So we're supposed to wait 5 years for season 2 of Daredevil? That doesn't make much sense and is very impractical. But maybe these are very self contained stories that don't NEED to have a follow up season immediately after.

The cast and crew isn't going to wait around 5 years between seasons. They're going to move on to other jobs. The studio runs the risk of losing people. Very impractical from a business and creative standpoint.

Excellent point. There is no way that this timeline will go forward.

There won't be a season two of Daredevil with that kind of schedule. They just don't want to crush fans' hopes before the season airs.

I assume the plan is to have these characters make small cameos in the bigger Marvel movies.

To me it sounds like the year wait is only between each different show. I dont think it applies to second seasons of those shows. I'm sure once a show premieres it'll get its following seasons a year later like most Netflix shows.

The package was sold as 60 episodes between the 5 shows. So they haven't really showed their hand on how they'd proceed with additional seasons.

It's not one creative team working on all the shows one at a time. I suspect it'll end up being:
2015 - DD Season 1, JJ Season 1
2016 - DD Season 2, JJ Season 2, PM Season 1, IF Season 1
2017 - Defenders Movie
2018 - DD Season 3, JJ Season 3, PM Season 2, IF Season 2,

That's not what the deal was for though. The deal, as it stand now, was for a 60 episode package from Marvel, consisting of those 5 shows.

"Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a culminating Marvel’s “The Defenders” mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters."

Yes, keyword being minimum. That is old news. Maybe it's all a different plan now.

Guess it all depends on whatever Netflix uses as ratings. If DD is really popular, they'll sign a deal with Marvel to add extra seasons.

Re: Marvel's Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist & Defenders coming to Net

this should clear it up:

Netflix's Ted Sarandos has answered one question that has been lingering ever since Marvel and Netflix announced their partnership to create four superhero series (and a team-up mini-series) for the streaming network.

That question is also probably the most obvious one - are these one-offs or will these be ongoing shows? The good news is, it sounds like Netflix is thinking the latter assuming they perform well. Speaking at the TCA Winter Press Tour this week, Sarandos says: "They're all eligible to go into multiple seasons for sure, and [we]contemplate that they will."

Sarandos also implied "The Defenders" miniseries, which brings all four series together, could becoming an ongoing series as well. The plan is also to have each series screen between 8-15 months from the previous one.

The downside of this news is that Marvel's "A.K.A. Jessica Jones" may not premiere until early 2016, and "Luke Cage" will be a late 2016/early 2017 release. Sarandon says: "We're not trying to hit a fall programming schedule or hit a grid number. We want to give them enough room and enough time to make a great show. I don't want to set up a rigid time table."

Right... but what we're trying to figure out is when would the second season of these shows air. If they go by that timeline it'd be a 4 year gap between seasons.

Well no, a year for each new show to start... they've said nothing about when DD next season would air (if they green-light it).

You guys were just recently discussing if they are getting more than one season. Looks like they can get more. Sure, the logistics seem wonky, but let's let them get the first show out before we try to criticize how/when future seasons come out.

Re: Marvel's Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist & Defenders coming to Net

“Doctor Who” star David Tennant has been cast as Marvel villain Kilgrave on Netflix’s “AKA Jessica Jones,” Marvel announced Monday.

After a tragic ending to her short-lived super hero stint, Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City. An enigmatic figure from Jessica’s past, Kilgrave’s reappearance will send shockwaves through the former super hero’s world. Mike Colter will also star as Luke Cage. The series was developed by executive producer/showrunner Melissa Rosenberg.

“I’m so honored and excited by the prospect of David inhabiting this multifaceted character,” said Rosenberg. “He can deliver the most heart-wrenching moment to the driest of lines, and all points in between. He’ll make Kilgrave a truly original villain.”

“Anyone familiar with David’s work knows he brings an incredible level of dedication to any role he inhabits, a level we knew we would need from the man playing Kilgrave,” said Jeph Loeb, executive producer and Marvel’s Head of Television. “While most know him for his roles as a hero, we can’t wait to unleash a whole new side of this talented actor.”

A character called “Killgrave” appears in Marvel comics canon: Zebediah Killgrave is known as The Purple Man, an international spy turned criminal who was originally introduced to menace Daredevil before becoming an antagonist for Jessica Jones. No word on whether Tennant will make an appearance in Netflix’s “Daredevil” series (scheduled to bow on April 10) before transitioning to “Jessica Jones” later in the year, but the two shows (along with Netflix’s subsequent Luke Cage and Iron Fist follow-ups) will be based in Hell’s Kitchen, presumably allowing for plenty of crossover between the heroes before their “Defenders” miniseries team-up.

The 13-episode series will premiere on Netflix in 2015.

The character is key to Jessica Jones' character arc, so it's great that they cast him well.

Re: Marvel's Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist & Defenders coming to Net

“Jessica Jones” has found her best friend.

Rachael Taylor has been cast as Trish Walker in Netflix’s original superhero series “Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones,” which stars Krysten Ritter as the title character. Marvel made the announcement Thursday.

Taylor’s casting news comes just days after Marvel announced that the villain has been cast: “Broadchurch” and “Doctor Who” star David Tennant will play Kilgrave.

Trish Walker (Taylor), the best friend of Jessica (Ritter), is a syndicated radio talk show host, former model and child television star who’s best known to her fans as “Patsy” Walker, based on the Marvel Comics character who appeared under the superhero identity of Hellcat. In the series, Trish will help Jessica embark on the most dangerous case of her career.

The 13-episode series will follow Jessica, after her short-lived and tragically ended superhero stint, as she rebuilds her personal life and detective career, getting pulled into cases involving extraordinary people in New York City.

Taylor previously starred in ABC’s “Charlie’s Angels” and “666 Park Avenue,” and she recurred on “Grey’s Anatomy.”

“Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones” will premiere on Netflix this year.

Good casting (though there's a part of me that wishes they had cast Dreama Walker).
