Masters of Sex -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/29/13
Synopsis:
Dramatic depiction of the lives of sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson. In the opener, Masters begins conducting a secret study of human sexuality and meets Virginia Johnson, a former nightclub singer who joins the hospital secretarial staff and proves herself to be an asset to Masters' work.
12 episode 1st season
I just read an interview with Lizzy Caplan and she said this show is very frank about sex and will feature a lot of sex and nudity. I like that it's a period show like Mad Men.

Alan Sepinwell said this is the best new series of the season. His word alone means i'll at least give it a shot

Saw the pilot a few weeks ago. Really enjoyed it. Can't wait for the second episode.

Michael Sheen's American accent is pretty damn good, isn't it?
Liked the pilot, but can't help but wonder how they're going to make an ongoing series out of this and keep it interesting...seems like material better suited for a cable movie. Anyway, it was good enough that I'll be watching the rest of the season.

I thought it was pretty damn interesting and well done. I'm fascinated by the history of medicine and there's been so little done on the subject in TV or movies over the years (Kinsey, Awakenings, Something The Lord Made, and The Band Played On). I'm also a Michael Sheen fan. I'll keep watching now that I've finally got Showtime for at least the run of a homeland S3. It looks to be pretty good.
BTW : The pilot was directed by John Madden who did Shakespeare in Love.

I'm curious how many times this has been said in a pilot thread

Here's Alan Sepinwall's take on the sex in the show:
What's perhaps most impressive about "Masters of Sex" is how sincere it is. So many shows about sex take on a cheeky tone, or a self-congratulatory one. This one features an abundance of nudity — nipple fetishists in particular will have never had it so good — and a healthy amount of simulated sex and masturbation, yet there's never a sense that we're meant to giggle at this, nor that Ashford and the rest of the creative team are patting themselves on the back for their daring. It can be a very funny show at times — among the early highlights is a subplot about a handsome doctor who falls for his partner in the study, even though she won't have sex with him away from the watchful eye of Dr. Masters — but it's also matter-of-fact about all the body parts and all the thrusting. You make a show about wiseguys, you have to include some violence; you make a show about sex researchers, and you have to show a lot of sex.

Watched this last night and liked it. Liked that the phone call from the top doc (Beau Bridges) came in at just the last minute (as we knew it would). One thing I'm confused by though is Masters' wife. I must be missing something, because she repeatedly called him "daddy" or "Teddy" (I couldn't quite make it out). Since his name is William, I wasn't following that. Anyone know?

I think that happened more back then... wife called husband Daddy, and husband called wife mommy - although usually they'd have kids for that to happen.
The premiere was only ok. I felt like I was watching the movie Kinsey.
It does feel more like it would work best as a mini-series... or at most a one-season series. Can't see how they're going to make it multi-seasoned. I've said that about other shows which wound up going longer, but in most cases they shouldn't have and the extra seasons were just garbage.

Finally watched this. A bit boring at times, but I enjoyed it overall. The series certainly has potential.
