The Goldbergs (ABC) - Season 1 Thread - Starring Jeff Garlin
Synopsis: The ’80s-set series revolves around an overbearing, hyper-emotional shopaholic with no sense of boundaries and a big mouth. Nonetheless, she’s a very dedicated mom.
Starring: Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jeff Garlin, George Segal
Along with The Americans and The Carrie Diaries, ABC’s new show The Goldbergs continues this trend of TV revisiting the 1980s. Yet another sitcom about a dysfunctional family, this one – narrated by comedian Patton Oswalt – seems to be a cross between The Wonder Years and another ABC show, The Middle. The inclusion of the quirky younger brother character with the video camera is especially reminiscent of The Middle. I’m not entirely sure if that’s a good thing or not. The humor in the preview doesn’t really gel with the sentimentality it’s building up to, but that could just be a product of seeing the pilot compressed into 2 minutes and some-odd seconds.

I hope to watch this tonight, one thing they could have done in the spirit of the 80s would have been to film it 4x3 SD instead of in HD.

But no, a show shot in 2013 won't be in 4x3 for nostalgia sake.
I'm tuning in. Looks like a whackier Wonder Years (I even liked Oliver Beene a few years back on Fox)

Well Big Brother is still not in HD in 2013.

I dunno about this. I like Jeff Garlin but tend to not like ABC programming very often. Might try a couple episodes.

Garlin was on Keith Olbermann's show last night and actually said 'I am promoting this because i actually support it & think its really funny. I would not be out promoting it if i thought it was a piece of crap'

I hope this show is better than it looks. Those matching sweaters make me think of that horrible Will Ferrell/John C. Reilly move 'Stepbrothers'.

It felt like The Middle set in the 80s with a narrator just like The Wonder Years. I liked the youngest kid shooting the SD video on an old camcorder. It was funny, I'll keep tuning in.

Dr. DVD, I agree. The family was too loud and annoying. Did Jeff Garlin really have to scream all his lines? Is he like that on CYE too? I'll still give it for another shot since I was a child of the '80s.

I also found the characters to be loud and annoying, but I will tune in next week to see if it gets better.

Agreed, the family was annoying. I wanted to like this due to the 1980's setting, but I did not like the characters.
I actually enjoyed Trophy Wife a lot more.

My wife totally recognized the middle kid as being young Jack Black from Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny. I was very impressed when she was proven correct.
I enjoyed it - had a few laughs, no laugh track and I'm a fan of Wendi McLendon-Covey.

I generally hate laugh tracks ....... but maybe a laugh track would give me some clues as to what is meant to be funny ......

I seriously doubt some suburban white kid in 1985 would know who Flava Flav was. Public Enemy's debut album didn't even come out until 1987. (Nitpicky, I know, but anachronistic references in 80s-setting shows and films are a weird pet peeve of mine.)

I liked the end credits where they showed tape of his actual family side by side with the show, but all the characters were over-the-top loud, abrasive and unlikeable.

Eh. I'll give it another episode.
By the way since someone brought up Big Brother, do those kind of shows have multiple seasons per year? I don't watch any of them but always see "season 27 of Survivor" etc. on commercials.

Yeah, some shows like Survivor do a spring & fall season, counting as two seasons in a year. Big Brother is only one per year though.

I'll give it another shot, but the irritating, overplayed characters don't look like they'll be growing on me. Plus, I thought the '80s, the decade of my childhood, wasn't well evoked, aside from the superficial continuity of cars and hairdos. The way they behaved and talked, these people didn't seem like they were situated in the '80s.
