The Newsroom -- Season Finale -- "Election Night, Part II" -- 9/15/13

Synopsis:

As election night 2012 winds down, Will and Charlie await a decision from Reese (Chris Messina) that may impact their future at ACN, and that of the entire senior staff. Sloan learns the identity of the anonymous winning bidder for her book; Don (Thomas Sadoski) discusses a countersuit against Jerry (Hamish Linklater) with Rebecca (Marcia Gay Harden); Neal turns to Hallie (Grace Gummer) for help giving Mac a parting gift; Jim tries to make peace with Lisa (Kelen Coleman), encouraging Maggie (Alison Pill) to do the same; Will has a revelation while Charlie is sharing his.

Written by Aaron Sorkin; directed by Alan Poul

Episode 9/9

Man, this season flew by. Hopefully next year they will get 10-12 episodes.

Re: The Newsroom -- Season Finale -- "Election Night, Part II" -- 9/15/13

Hopefully next year two episodes won't be such an abortion they have to be reshot and even then are complete crap.

I like this show at its core. I wish the show would either become complete liberal fantasy or drop the effort to be completely about how the Tea Party has insanely perverted the Republican Party (though it has). I also think Sorkin surely must have learned a lesson about making shows from this season. IIRC, he brought in more "balanced" writers for this season and the shaky early part is what I presume resulted. I hope he hires no more Ricky and Rons and does the show he wants to do with no agenda and no compromises. That's what I most want to see.

The two clips posted on youtube promise classic Sorkin dialogue for this ep.

It's funny watching the reruns on Sports Night on FXX. I've been using Newsroom as an analogy to explain who/what the characters are on the show:

Isaac = Charlie
Dana = Mac
Casey/Dan = Will
Natalie = Maggie
Jeremy = Jim

Kelen Coleman said on Twitter that Lisa will make an appearance tonight.

I'm so glad Sorkin doesn't feel the need to go out on downers.

ive been going through sports night for the first time, & can def see the comparisons (the Newsroom almost feels like an unoffical sequel to Sports Night)

Absolutely loved the finale. Totally makes up for what was mostly a lackluster season when compared to S1. And Olivia Munn's Sloan Sabbith is hands down for me the best character Sorkin's created. That payoff with Don was awesome.

These last two episodes are easily my favorite of the series so far, some fucking hilarious lines. I was almost losing my shit during the part where Charlie was telling Reese they weren't going to resign. So glad that this was renewed for another season. I agree that Olivia Munn's character is fantastic, which is amazing, because I was pretty hesitant even after her first few appearances, but this season especially she has been terrific.

Good season finale. I warmed up to this season, but the first few episodes were a bit rough.

One question: At the end of the night, Maggie checks the computer when she hears an alert. Was this done solely because of her conversation with Jim (about the events of the pilot episode), or was there an actual event that happened after the Election was over?

Pretty sure it was just to tie back into that conversation.

Yep, it was a callback to that convo about Jim clicking on the alert when nobody else cared. Same situation there at the end. Everybody's having a jolly good time, she hears and alert and clicks on it anyway.

Sloan is the best character on the show. I loved it when she was continuously interrupted until she finally yelled 'COME ON!" And as Kal-El said, the payoff with Don was awesome.

Sloan is awesome, I thought it a little weak that Mac and Will stole the thunder of Sloan and Don's relationship.

All to nicey nicey for me!

Yeah another Sloan fan here... And I can honestly say prior to this show Olivia Munn has always grated on my last nerve. Sure she's hot and all, but she always made me cringe. She definitely won me over with this show (I'm sure that was her intent too!).

Re: The Newsroom -- Season Finale -- "Election Night, Part II" -- 9/15/13

Didn't love this season as much as the first however it still had a lot of great and funny moments and will definitely be back for season 3. I too was concerned about Olivia Munn in this show. I prejudged her as just another talentless pretty face. All i had seen her in was one episode of her short lived sitcome cause it was horrible. In this show She absolutely nails this character, one of the best of the show.

That was a solid finale. After a rough season, I'm glad it ended on a positive note, especially for Will and Mac. And Sloan was just awesome. At least we got some closure on the whole Maggie deal.

I also liked Taylor Warren as well. Wouldn't mind seeing Contance Zimmer come back next season as a Political analyst for ACN.

Re: The Newsroom -- Season Finale -- "Election Night, Part II" -- 9/15/13

Watched this last night and thought it was a really good finale. Felt like a series finale -- especially the final sequence (I'm sure they wrote it as such). Overall, the season wasn't as good as the first, but it steadily improved for a strong finish.

Glad it's coming back.

Yeah, she was great, and she has some pretty good comedic timing. For the sake of Republicans, I just hope she doesn't become the character who spouts off Republican talking points, just so the others can shoot her down. That'd be boring.

If it's not that, she'll be Republican character they win over to Sorkin's idea of what is reasonable. I'd prefer she be Republican talking points between the two possibilities.

Re: The Newsroom -- Season Finale -- "Election Night, Part II" -- 9/15/13

Loved this finale. Somehow they transformed Don from this total douche in the pilot to one part of my favorite relationship on this show. Sloan is also my favorite, but I realized sometime around episode 5 or so that I really loved Don too. They were obviously going to hookup soon, but it's been a lot of fun to watch them circling around. The payoff was pretty superb too.

Pretty funny that everybody (including me) scoffed when Olivia Munn was hired... and she's just knocked it out of the park. Really glad this show is coming back.

Mordred, I think you've really hit on the most special part of this show for me now that I think about it. It has shown with Jim, Maggie, Don, Sloan, heck pretty much everybody just how important the person you're dating is to who you are. Don WAS this total douche when he was with Maggie. It was all wrong for him and it just pervaded who he was at that time and who Maggie was. I think we see that going on with Will and Mac. They have been in this holding pattern with one another because even though shit has gone down between them they both prefer the person they are when they are attached somehow. This show has done a lot for this premise, and it's a premise I find to be very compelling for both entertainment and in real life.

That's a pretty good insight. Speaking from personal experience, Sorkin is probably on to something.

Re: The Newsroom -- Season Finale -- "Election Night, Part II" -- 9/15/13

So, I just re-watched all of Season 2 over two days. I enjoyed it quite a bit more this time around. It did get a bit confusing with the timeline jumping all over the place, but it still worked for me. It was a bit easier to follow with the way I watched it, as opposed to week-to-week where I kind of forgot certain details. I'm definitely in for the 3rd season.

Re: The Newsroom -- Season Finale -- "Election Night, Part II" -- 9/15/13

Picked up for Season 3, which will be its final season.

http://www.deadline.com/2014/01/news...al-season-hbo/

HBO is losing Boardwalk, True Blood and Newsroom next season, and just finished Eastbound and Down. I guess they have a lot of faith in their upcoming lineup.
