Ironside (NBC) -- Blair Underwood/Spencer Grammer -- Series Thread
Synopsis:
In the gritty world of the NYPD, no one's tougher than Det. Robert Ironside (Blair Underwood, "The Event," "In Treatment"). He's a fearless cop who won't stop until the guilty are brought to justice. He and his trusted, handpicked team of specialists - Virgil (Pablo Schreiber, "The Wire" "Lights Out"), Holly (Spencer Grammer, "Greek," "As the World Turns") and Teddy (Neal Bledsoe, "Smash," "Ugly Betty"), as well as his former partner Gary (Brent Sexton, "The Killing") and boss, Det. Ed Rollins (Kenneth Choi, "Sons of Anarchy") - will do whatever it takes to solve New York's most difficult and notorious crimes. As a detective, Ironside's instincts are second to none, and those around him have to stay on their toes if they want to keep up because when his spine was shattered by a bullet two years ago, Ironside swore he'd never let a wheelchair slow him down.
Does not officially premiere until October 2nd. But, NBC posted the Pilot early online. Here it is if any of you have the time:

Just to be clear, this is an NYPD procedural drama. The original Ironside with Raymond Burr was an SFPD procedural drama. If you don't like procedural dramas, then don't bother.
I won't be doing episode threads for this. This will be the thread for the entire season. Not sure if I will watch the Pilot yet or wait until the TV debut.

Watched the pilot. I really like Underwood, and it was done well enough.
But I just can't stay interested in procedurals, and this one didn't hook me even tenuously like Elementary did.
Gotta give it a pass.

Watched this last night and it was ok...I'll give it at least three episodes before making a decision. I had one question though:

I like Blair Underwood, but I think I'm passing on this. Doesn't look all too interesting. I'll give my attention to The Blacklist.

This was OK. I think this was the first I've seen of Blair Underwood since LA Law, and I like him, but it seems like standard police procedural with underlying guilt/anger themes. I won't continue.
That was my impression, though I admit I wasn't paying superclose attention by this point in the show.

Is it sad this caught my attention from Spencer Grammer? Which reminds me, I need to go back and finish Greek...

I still think they should have tried getting someone actually disabled to play the part but because they want him to be able to still physically do more outside of the chair, they went for the "act disabled" route.
I'm not a fan of it on Glee, and I'm certainly not a fan of it here.

Anybody ever watch the original, either when it was on or in reruns like me?
Of course, other than the name and the main character being wheelchair bound, they may have no connection at all.
It's hard to believe Raymond Burr has been gone for 20 years.

I think they were trying too hard. Everyone is a little too sexy and a little too edgy. I think they overplayed the wheelchair too - "Look at me! I'm in a wheelchair and I coach hockey." That "shoot the hostage" thing has been done so many times, it's corny now. I might give it another episode if nothing better is on.

At this stage in his career, Blair Underwood is fine as an ensemble actor. Pivoting an entire series around him was foolhardy and risky, but NBC is desperate as they usually can't afford more expensive talent.

Will they burn off the rest of the season on Saturday nights like Do No Harm?

It's funny because are there any legal dramas currently on network TV outside of Good Wife (I consider SVU cop drama)? Meanwhile, seems like there are a gazillion cop/law enforcement dramas. CBS has so many itself.

Mason was special. Not just a typical legal drama, but a combination of lawyer and detective. Shows like Law & Order keep those characters separate -- the tough cops hand everything over to the lawyers for the boring courtroom conclusion -- but Mason wasn't afraid to assume the detective role, getting out there and busting down doors or tampering with evidence or even intentionally incriminating himself to get a result. Sort of like a lawyer, Sherlock Holmes, and Batman all in one.
