Well you didn't watch week-to-week for 6 years for that payoff. Big difference. :)

I actually did until half way through Season 6, then gave up and decided to wait until the series ended.

Then I did and it was a while until I got around to it.

Re: What TV Series Is Worth A Buy ?

I used to buy a bunch of tv shows and then I realized I just don't go through them and have stopped purchasing them.

The ones I have watched multiple times and will continue to watch and own:
Archer (so consistent, fantastic writing, at worst great background noise)
Band of Brothers (flawless, seen it 5 times or so)
Game of Thrones (flawless, always watch each season again with subtitles aside from other viewings)
Sherlock (more like movies, but love them)

Debating:
Strike Back (seen once, assessing replay value now)

Watched multiple times and reached my fill and sold:
Arrested Development (Seasons 3 and 4 are just nowhere near the first 2)
Bored to Death
Breaking Bad
Eastbound
Flight of the Conchords
Freaks and Geeks
Justified
The League
Pacific
Rome
True Blood
The Wire

Though I love the shows, I don't see any reason to rewatch or any replay value in shows like Veronica Mars, Entourage, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Walking Dead, Deadwood, etc...

And any craving I may have for a scene here and there, I just put up the to go apps all the main players have to get my quick fill without dropping cash.

Firefly: Cheap, short, and rewatchable.

Game of Thrones: Only two seasons so far, and highly rewards repeat watching.

There are some other shows that I've enjoyed rewatching like Chuck, but multiple seasons are more of a commitment, and some of these shows don't hit their stride in the first season.

I would just get netflix and be done with it.
For $7.99 a month you get so many great shows in a complete series format.

Lost
Mad Men
Desperate Housewives
The Walking Dead
Family Ties
The Office
House Of Cards
That 70's Show
X-Files
And on and on.
It's just endless.

I am still on the year of 1985 for Saturday Night Live. :lol:

Re: What TV Series Is Worth A Buy ?

I have a lot of TV shows on my media server, all of which I find rewatchable:

Spoiler:

* America's Test Kitchen
* Archer
* Arrested Development
* Batman: The Animated Series
* Batman Beyond
* Battlestar Galactica
* Better Off Ted
* Boardwalk Empire
* Brass Eye
* Breaking Bad
* Buffy the Vampire Slayer
* Community
* Cowboy Bebop
* Curb Your Enthusiasm
* The Day Today
* Eastbound & Down
* Flight of the Conchords
* Freaks and Geeks
* Game of Thrones
* Get a Life
* Homeland
* I'm Alan Partridge
* It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
* Jam
* Justice League/Justice League Unlimited
* Justified
* Key & Peele
* Knowing Me, Knowing You w/ Alan Partridge
* The League
* Look Around You
* Louie
* Mr. Show
* Mystery Science Theater 3000
* Newsradio
* The Office (S1 - 5)
* Paranoia Agent
* The Peter Seronifwicz Show
* Parks & Recreation
* Party Down
* The Prisoner
* Seinfeld
* The Shield
* The Simpsons (S1 - 9)
* The Sopranos
* Spectacle: Elvis Costello With...
* Star Trek [original]
* Star Wars: Clone Wars [original 2003 series]
* Superman: The Animated Series
* Survivor
* That Mitchell & Webb Look
* The Thick of It
* The Twilight Zone
* The Walking Dead [may ditch this, though...]
* Whose Line Is It Anyway? [US and UK editions]
* The Wire
* The X-Files (S1 - 6)
* Veep

Now this doesn't mean I watch these shows all the time; sometimes I'll go a year or two before rewatching something. But I have these shows for various reasons:

- Shows which are self-contained, like It's Always Sunny, Simpsons, Louie, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, etc. are a great way to kill 30-60 minutes while I'm working on the computer or on the train/bus going to/from work, and I don't feel like reading/browsing the web.
- Something like America's Test Kitchen I use as a reference, and only fire up when I need to check a recipe.
- Then there's serialized stuff like Breaking Bad, The Wire, Sopranos, Survivor, which are hard to pick up and jump into, but are great when you want to marathon something over the weekends (if I have time, that is...).
- And UK shows like The Day Today, Alan Partridge, Thick of It, Jam, etc. have typically very short episode runs, making it easy to take in the full show at once.

As I mentioned, I've digitized all my DVDs and Blu-Rays and put the files onto my media server, so I can watch anything from the above with just a couple of button presses on my USB remote, and through an attractive interface to boot. That helps A LOT with replay value. If I had to keep loading these up disc by disc, I might be whistling a different tune.

Netflix is great, and there's a bit of overlap with their content and mine, but with this setup I don't have to worry about a show I'm in the middle of being pulled or stopping because my connection died/got slow (and I get to watch em in full 1080p glory where available).

Man. Some of you guys have some serious TV show collections. I would not have thought about most shows being worth a buy to watch over and over.
LOST is like a movie to me so I could see that series in a collection. Twilight Zone are like little movies so I could see those as well. I like Walking Dead but not sure I would buy it to watch again ... well possibly.
Most of what I like are not worth buys to me but if I see a marathon on TV I'll watch. I like watching CHiPs but would never consider having it on disc but if it's on, I'll watch.

I enjoy popping in a tv show over a movie 95% of the time. Most of my dvd/blu collection goes unwatched in favor of tv sets.

Re: What TV Series Is Worth A Buy ?

It's tough to put a value on "worth buying" these days.

I have Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus so at the very least I have Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, Mad Men, The Killing, Parenthood, Bob's Burgers, The Office, Family Guy, American Dad, Futurama, The League, Rescue Me, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, Louie, Wilfred, Weeds, Fringe, Arrested Development, Raising Hope, Prison Break, 24, Sherlock, Archer, Top Gear, Damages, How I Met Your Mother, My Name is Earl, Vampire Diaries, Switched at Birth, Supernatural, Jericho, White Collar, Cheers, Awake, Burn Notice, Psych, Malcolm in the Middle, King of the Hill, Everybody Loves Raymond, Frasier, The West Wing, The IT Crowd, Scrubs, Spaced, Better Off Ted, Columbo, The X-files, The Twilight Zone, Twin Peaks, Dowton Abbey, Suits, Justified, The Good Wife, Doug, Rocko's Modern Life, The Shield, Modern Family, The Wonder Years, etc; at my finger tips whenever I want, ask again when the streaming model collapses.

Re: What TV Series Is Worth A Buy ?

Yeah back when I first started watching Breaking Bad, I thought that I would eventually buy the Blu-ray sets. But then they're all on Netflix, and I don't really listen to episode commentaries that much, so it's all via that now. Even with Mad Men I stopped buying after season 4. The fact that Amazon didn't have the $10 deal didn't help.

I can rewatch anything I really like with 5-10 years between viewings. There is one show I can watch over and over and over, continuously, every day of my life and enjoy like the first time, The Honeymooners.

Quantum Leap. Pretty much the only show I've re-watched the entire series of more than twice. Probably my favorite show ever. And yes, I loved the final season and the final episode.

Re: What TV Series Is Worth A Buy ?

Kind of a tough question. We have many favorite shows that we heartily recommend such as The Wire that we will undoubtedly watch again & others that are great but require a lot of viewing time in order to get the complete story. On the other hand, we have long-running shows (150+ episodes) that we might be less likely to re-watch in their entirety but would reach for when wanting to have a quick 30-50 minute supper viewing. It doesn't help that we're catching up on current shows/movies On Demand, which makes choosing even harder.

So it depends upon whether you mean watching the entire series (required for the shows that have a continuous, consecutive, integrated storyline) or just picking a favorite with self-contained stories.

We're looking forward to revisiting Prison Break, Deadwood, Game of Thrones, Buffy, Angel, X-Files, & Twin Peaks. But we also can watch old Gunsmoke, Rawhide, Twilight Zone, Star Trek, Andy Griffith, and many other classics just about any time.

I think your preferences depend upon how much time you have to devote to viewing and how many current shows/movies you are following.

None of this was a problem in the pre-video days. Back then one just hoped to catch a show or movie one time (if you were lucky). And then you hoped that the reception was decent that day and that you could distinguish one character from another & hear the dialogue over the static. Good times.

A list of BBC shows needs The Prisoner and Monty Python's Flying Circus.
