I found this to be the weakest season so far.
Loved Pete in this episode between trying to drive stick and his reactions to Bob and the news about his mother.

Interview with Weiner about the season and last night's finale here.
Also, I believe it's pretty much a done deal that season 7 will be the last. Now whether they pull a stunt and extend the number of episodes and split it into two (see Breaking Bad) is anyone's guess.

I can't tell if that interview is the same one that Alan Sepinwall ran in Hitflix this morning or not. Some of it seems to be the same, some is different.
Here's that interview:

'This is where i grew up'
And Sally and Don exchange a look.
What a large chunk of the season has been working up to, so very well done.

I didn't think this season was as good as last season (weakest thus far, perhaps). I did like last night's finale though -- several great moments: Don's speech to Hershey, Pete and Bob in the elevator, the partner's meeting and yeah, that final exchange between Don and Sally in the final scene.

Actually the final three episodes (#11 - Sally spies Don with Sylvia, #12 - Don's tailspin, sabotaging Ted & Peggy at St Joseph's, Sally playing grown-up at boarding school and #13 last night) were all great episodes. I was a little disappointed for the first ten episodes, but it's really come up these last three weeks.

For me, 'Mad Men' is still the high point by which all other shows should be measured. I find it almost impossible to separate the seasons since so little actually happens; rather I find it a character development story played over the (up to now) 6 seasons. Really enjoyed this season and if there's a minor quibble, it's the lack of really strong characters which have been present in previous years, especially Megan, beardy guy and Pete's descent into sideshow.

Thanks for that link. The final shot certainly looked CG'd to hell and back, but at least the interaction between Don and Sally worked. Great season closer.
One thing I really wish we could see more of are the streets of New York. I realize that would be expensive as fuck, and really not possible, but in a way, period dramas sometimes feel like three camera sitcoms that regard. Both of them are unable to show 'everything' for different reasons. I do recall at least one nice outdoor shot in the pilot episode, but that's to be expected to sell the show.

This was definitely the weakest season for me. I had the final 3 episodes I had to watch last night.
I'm glad we got some Sally storylines to make things a little more interesting. Joan was thrown to the side in the last few episodes, which was disappointing.
Final season should be great, I would hope.

Re: Mad Men -- Season Finale -- "In Care Of" -- 6/23/13
I just watched the season finale last night. Mad Men just wasn't appointment television for me this season, which is funny because last season I couldn't wait to watch it every Sunday. I thought this season was definitely overall pretty weak compared to the others, but it did get pretty good in the last five or six episodes.
The standout parts of the episode were easily Don's speech to the Hershey guys and the final scene with Don showing Sally, Bobby, and Gene where he grew up. Also the stuff between Pete and Bob is sort of interesting but I'm not sure exactly where it is they're going with it.
I think next season will be a good time to end it personally. It seems like the show was sort of reaching for ideas at the beginning of this season to me and like some of the episodes could have been condensed together to make them stronger. Should be interesting next season though to see what is done with Don and if he is really finished with Sterling Cooper & Partners or if it's just temporary. It seems like he's done and it also seems like he's fine with moving on at this point and honestly I'm fine with that. Also wonder if he'll find Megan and reunite with her or if their relationship will just dissolve.
I don't think that they'll try to extend the series any further than Weiner wants it to go and he's already said that the plan is for it to end after season seven. It wouldn't surprise me at all though if AMC decides to split the season like they did with Breaking Bad.

I think that has been the whole show in a nutshell. There are really no characters that you can feel any sympathy for, outside of the kids, and Pete Campbell's wife. Every main character has some serious issues, but that's what has made this show so compelling.

There's a very interesting article on Medium right now, theorizing how Mad Men is going to end. It ties the show's fascination with American history into the poster for the final season, showing Don Draper facing forwards and backwards. It's worth going out of your way to find.
