To be honest, I thought the series was maybe a little more realistic on this part than having John Umber kill like 14 Frey's but it would have been cool to see.

I don't think that's meant to be taken as 100% true. It sounds like a more poetic way to say he's still in love with her. But since they weren't reunited until Ned became the Hand, I seriously doubt he's really waited.

I just watched all three seasons a second time and we watched this episode last night. It is nerve racking even knowing what is going to happen!

Anyway, what did I miss to make Bolton switch from Stark to Lannister? A couple episodes ago, Bolton was with Robb in the encampment. Then, if I recall correctly, Bolton was at Harrenhall (sorry for the spelling). Did he make a deal with Jamie? There was a look of disgust on Bolton's face when Robb was with his wife. Was he offended by Robb fucking over Frey too?

Roose only has loyalty to the winning side. When Robb was winning, he was content to stay loyal to him, even if he wasn't particularly fond of the Starks. Once he saw that Robb was losing, i.e. the fall of Winterfell (if there's a single driving force, this is it) and subsequent marriage to Talisa, Roose decided it was best to jump ship. After all, he wouldn't allow himself to be caught dead on the losing side.

There was a scene early on in the season where they show Tywin writing a bunch of letters. I can't remember if he admitted it to Tyrion in Ep10 but that was basically him persuading the Boltons and other families to go to the Dark Side.

I said that Roose was never truly behind Robb, he was just looking for the right opportunity.

-Winterfell was sacked, meaning instead of staying in the south to continue pushing the fight against the Lannisters, Robb decides to head back north to recapture Winterfell. Roose did not agree with this decision.
-Robb married Talisa instead of honoring his vow to marry a Frey. Roose knew Robb would lose the Freys because of this.
-Cat releasing Jaime didn't help the North's cause.
-The other Northern bannermen didn't seem to agree with the execution of Rickard Karstark.

All these things led to the downfall of the North and Roose Bolton, who was never fully behind Robb in the first place, saw it as an opportunity to join the winning side.

Not only the winning side, but by joining the Lannisters, House Bolton gets the title of Warden of the North and Winterfell should they prevail. Far more to gain with the Lannisters.

Let's just say that there's a lot you don't know about the Bolton family yet. Remember when Roose wanted to flay the prisoners? (A naked man has few secrets, a flayed man has none.) Their banner is a man who has been flayed and crucified. The Boltons are really unpleasant people.

I could see how Roose watching Robb execute the Karstarks would have made him uneasy with the idea of Robb, with his rigid sense of morality, being King of the North.

Thanks everyone. I should have watched Episode 10 before posting. It reiterated a lot of the points laid out. Bolton said flat out that he'd still be with Robb if he wasn't so "arrogant" and listened to him once in a while. Tywin also owns up to having Frey deal the death blow. Also, Bolton becoming Warden of the North is pretty damned good reason to turncoat.

We should be seeing more of the Boltons(Roose and Ramsay) in season 4. At the time of the Red Wedding in the books, readers didn't really understand why Roose betrayed Robb. Sure, there's foreshadowing, but it's very subtle. In the books, GRRM doesn't even come out and say it's Roose that stabs Robb, he simply describes a man wearing a pink cloak; I picked up on it because I remember GRRM describing Roose's pink cloak earlier in the book, but a lot of readers missed that detail.

It's the same with the show, if you go back and watch it, you'll notice all of the glares that Roose gives Talisa in season 2, but any hints of treachery are very subtle. In fact, there are even some shippers of Roose+Robb out there that hint at a love that cannot be spoken of:

Absolutely. THis was the second complete viewing for me and now you watch for all the subtleties when you don't have to pay attention to the main plot line. You're right, Roose looks disgusted when Robb is with his wife. Also, I didn't catch it the first time, but Bolton is married to a Frey daughter.

Bolton's marriage was part of the deal. He picked the fattest one because he was promised her weight in gold.
