Started watching Friday Night Lights

I just finished Season 1 of Friday Night Lights. Really liked it - the characters, story, actors, etc.

Anyway, I'm 3 episodes into Season 2. WTF!

So I'm to believe:

The hottie brunette is a jesus freak picking up prison dudes
The daughter ditched Matt Sorensen and is smoking pot with the Swede
The cripple and John Carter from Mars are in Mexico for "experimental" surgery
The coach quit his brand new job, ruining his career
Matt Sorensen is jaded but has a hottie Mexican caregiver

I'm actually almost okay with all of that but the nerdy kid also killed a guy and is banging the slutty blonde?! There have been more jump the shark moments in the last episode I watched than in the whole first season, and that's saying a lot.

I've heard so many good things about the show that I'll stuck with it but does it get any better?

Please no spoilers past season one.

Yes. You're watching what happened during the writer's strike.

As someone who was forced to sit through all of S2 with his wife, I can honestly tell you that you can skip every episode of S2, start with S3, and it will be as if nothing ever happened. I recommend that.

Yeah, Season 2 really got kind of crazy, come to think of it. I had actually forgotten some of those story lines until you had mentioned them. There is a creative rebound for Season 3, though, and it is worth sticking with the whole series.

And, yeah, the Landry story line of killing that guy was PAINFUL.

Despite the terrible plotting of season two, FNL is still my all-time favorite TV show.

Oh, I'm going to watch the whole second season but man is some of this over the top. I've heard people here call this a top 5 television show so I'm honestly surprised.

People bitch about the

Season two is notoriously bad, but the rest of FNL is top notch TV.

Like season 4 of Community and season 2 of Human Target, season 2 of of FNL doesn't exist.

Yeah, there are still great storylines and acting in season 2. I'd stick with it. Bad FNL is still better than about anything on TV.

Welcome to a show that had low ratings it's first year and the network wanted to 'spice things up' in the second. Happens all the time.

God no. If you skip season 2 you loose the right to make fun of it afterwards.

Re: Started watching Friday Night Lights

Yeah, you just need to sit through it. Otherwise the jokes about where Santiago disappeared to won't make any sense to you when we talk about it on here.

It's a drop in quality, but to be fair, it's still better than most things on television and well worth plowing through it just to make sure it's in your rear view.... cause man, season 3 finale was probably one of the most "THIS SHOW BETTER FIND SOME HOME, GOD DAMN IT!" moments for us watching it live.

Then season 4 and 5 is pure fucking gold.

Luds 05-29-13 06:16 AM

Re: Started watching Friday Night Lights

Yeah season 2 has some pretty crappy storylines, when I watched it I didn't remember about the writer's strike and almost gave up on the show, glad I didn't because as everyone else already wrote, it's a fantastic series. I just wish season 2 wasn't so bad.

My favorite show of all-time. Just ignore season 2. The rest is beyond phenomenal. TEXAS FOREVER!!!!!!

Re: Started watching Friday Night Lights

I'm with the camp that says you should watch season 2 (still good characters and acting), but take EVERYTHING with a grain of salt. Many of the storylines are horrible, but you can look back on it at the end and say "Remember Season 2 of FNL? How shitty was that, right?"

DJariya 05-29-13 12:13 PM

Re: Started watching Friday Night Lights

You absolutely need to finish season 2. There are a few storylines/characters in it that resurface again in season 3. Since season 2 is essentially incomplete since they only filmed 15 of 22 episodes, season 3 helps bring them to closure.

Seasons 4 and 5 are pretty much one giant story arc.

mortalplague 05-29-13 12:51 PM

Re: Started watching Friday Night Lights

I agree with Djariya. While i think everyone agrees season two took horrible steps in the wrong direction, you still need to watch it for certain plot elements. It only gets better and then better from there :) Clear Eyes, Full hearts.

Trust me I would never skip a season. Hell, I'll be through the season in a week or so.

Jackskeleton 05-30-13 05:39 AM

Re: Started watching Friday Night Lights

If you skip out on season 2 you'll miss probably one of the most emotionally brutal scenes between Saracen and Coach in the series in episode 14.

That scene alone is worth getting through all the murder and religious bullshit.

I made it through season 3 then quit. I actually enjoyed season 2 even with all the silliness. I guess I just finally had enough with Texans and their fascination/obsession with football. I get enough of that in real life. My wife watched it all the way to the end and loved it, and I recommend the show highly even if I didn't keep with it all the way.

Seasons 4 and 5 were my favorites of the whole series. Vince is a great character and Michael B. Jordan is a fantastic young actor.

Also agreed that the series as a whole is my favorite TV series of all-time.

In light of this thread and a major summer viewing drought I decided to revisit Dillon. The pilot is still awesome. The acting, music and pure emotion was just phenomenal.

It's still a shame that this show isn't still on. Since this was one of the few shows centered on high school where people actually graduate, the potential to run for years was clearly there.

OK, reviving an old thread here. My wife and I started watching FNL a couple of weeks ago. Got through the first two seasons, and we are now 3 episodes into S3.

I'm glad to learn I wasn't alone in saying "WTF" a lot during S2. The whole Landry murder story was insane. My wife and I kept yelling at the screen "just call the cops NOW! It was self defense! You are MAKING EVERYTHING WORSE!" And then, magically, everything was better.

We started S3 tonight and it seemed that we missed something. Didn't realize that the S2 took place during the writers' strike. Makes sense that they would try to reset.

Still, this is an amazing show (yes, even S2). It's fun to see young actors who went on to bigger things later.

The amazing thing to me is that Landry (Jesse Plemons) is probably one of the best actors to come out of the show (the other being Michael B. Jordan but I think people were high on him even before his turn on FNL). It's like how I now wonder at Alias and how Bradley Cooper was like the nerdy best friend who wasn't the attractive one.

We haven't gotten to the Michael B Jordan parts yet.

I would say Connie Britton might be just ahead of Jesse Plemons as far as current success, she seems to be all over the place. Sucks Taylor Kitsch career never truly took off like people expected, I loved him in this show and enjoy everything he is in (even when the movie itself sucks).

My wife and I rewatch this show at the start of fall every other year and enjoy it every time. My wife gives me shit because almost every episode of season 1 makes me tear up. Zach Gilford is fantastic as Saracen.

Season 3 the show moved over to DirecTV after NBC cancelled it and they cut the episode orders from 22 to 13. It helped a lot with the pacing and storytelling. NBC ultimately decided to pick up the re-airs after it finished airing on DirecTV and that happened for the remainder of the show's run.

I look at season 3 as a course correction for what they screwed up in season 2. 4 and 5 were IMO really the reset and you'll see why.

5 episodes into S4 now. Damn, these people are self-destructive. Michael B. Jordan is really good, it is so much fun to see how some of these stars started out.

Also found out that my next door neighbor went to college with Connie Britton.

I've been binging this on Netflix for the last two months. I'm on S3 E10 now and I don't know how I missed it back in the day. This is a fantastic show and, eye-rolling moments aside, the characters have a lot of heart.
