To me it helps if you know that Ricky is an aetheist. Also try to found out what he said about his late mother. When you have read that watch the show.
I did and its the reason why the show works for me so much. I didn't like the second season so much as they felt the need to add a character who just keeps going on about sex. It felt out of place.

^ ??? There has only been one season, so far. Well, a pilot and one season.
I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I don't know what you're talking about. Kev was in the pilot and the regular six episodes. He was not added. He was always there.
This show is brilliant. Wonderful performances from Ricky and Karl. Love Kerry as Hannah as well. David Earl as Kev is genius in its depravity. If HBO passed on this then they are fools.

Mixed feelings on this. I enjoyed the show, but it took me the first couple episodes to get over Ricky Gervais's performace as "Derek". He never sold him as an actual character. I always knew I was watching Ricky Gervais performing carefully planned tics and mannerism. It was like he was an actor in a Saturday Night Live sketch, while everyone around him (like the fantastic nurse and the residents) were real people.
Not sure why knowing Ricky is an atheist is supposed to make me appreciate the show more.
So sad there won't be another season of Life's Too Short, which was really getting great by the last couple of episodes.
Although I think Derek is the lesser of all of Gervais's shows, I am very happy he has left behind the whole tired routine of movie stars appearing as asshole versions of themselves. That's what sunk Life Is Too Short, which was as its best when it focused on Warwick and his dating life, instead of embarrassing, overlong cameos by Johnny Depp.

Wonder why it got pushed back so far. I think it was originally supposed to hit Netflix this month.
I loved it. I thought Ricky was brilliant as Derek and the show is both hilarious and emotional. I shed quite a few tears during the last episode.
Looking forward to season 2!

I loved "Derek". As someone said, it's both hilarious and touching. Kind of like an evil clown.

I would say it is more touching than hilarious...like an evil clown that only wears the costume and makeup out of habit any more.

He became an athiest at the age of 8. He loved his mum quite alot and made a lovely and emotional speech about her a few years ago.
This what he said (quote from the WSJ):
"[I'll be] eating and drinking too much with friends and family," he wrote. "Celebrating life and remembering those that did, but can no longer.
"They are not looking down on me but they live in my mind and heart more than they ever did probably. Some, I was lucky enough to bump into on this planet of six billion people. Others shared much of my genetic material. One selflessly did her best for me all my life."
He admitted that he shed some tears while speaking about his mother, and what she meant to him during the festive season.
"That's what mums do though," he said. "They do it for no other reason than love. Not for reward. Not for recognition. They create you. From nothing. Miracle? They do those every day. No big deal.
"They are not worshipped. They would give their life without the promise of heaven. They teach you everything they know yet they are not declared prophets. And you only have one.
"I am crying as I write this. It usually gets me this time of year. That's what's special about Christmas. It's when you visit or reminisce about the ones you love. And reflect on how lucky you are. How they helped shape you."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think this show is for her. Especially in the pilot I (personnaly) felt he was saying alot of things to her.
In a later episode a daughter comes to speak to her mother and just cannot wait to leave so "she can get petrol on the way home". There are scenes in the show where I think they asked the eldery actors to bring in pictures of themselves when they were younger and incorperated them into the story.
I don't know wether his mum done that sort of job but I feel he is saying that people do that job out of love or/and a sense of duty to old people. Not because they cannot find any other work.
Just my thoughts. I was moved by a lot of moments in the shows.

I just watched all these again. One of the best things Ricky has done. My mom is in an assisted living facility so this really hits home and is very emotional as well as being very funny.

Count me among those who loved this. Way better than Life's Too Short and Extras.
Yeah it was heavy-handed but obviously sincere.
And Karl Pilkington was hilarious as Dougie.
