Sci-Fi TV Talk (Reverse) Sheep: "I am not a number--I am a free sheep!"

Intro for first time players
Spoiler:

(Reverse) Sheep is a game that is part Family Feud, part trivia game. The object of the game is to outwit other players through a series of questions that are usually united in theme. There are two types of questions.

The first, Sheep, is one where you try to think like everyone else and match their answers. The more people you match, the better you do. Let's say we have a game of six players (A through F). A Sheep question might be something like "Name a great color." Sheep questions never have right or wrong answers. Let's say our five players answered like this:

Players A, C, and E said "Blue"
Players B and D said "Green"
Player F said "Chartreuse"

Scoring in Sheep games is like golf: the lower your score, the better. The "Blue" players get -3 points (and the best answer). The "Green" players get -2 points. Player F did not match anyone and gets 0 points.

The second type of question, Reverse Sheep, is the exact opposite. You want to avoid matching other players. A Reverse Sheep question might be something like "Name a state on the Atlantic Coast." Reverse Sheep questions always have right or wrong answers. Let's say our players answered like this:

Players D and E said "Delaware"
Players F and B said "Maine"
Player C said "Texas"
Player A said "South Carolina"

Player A gets zero points, unless unique bonuses are in play (refer to the Game-Specific Rules). The "Delaware" players get +2 points (a penalty, since you want to have a low score). The "Maine" players also get +2 points. Player C's answer might be debated among the players to see if it is considered correct or not. Wrong answers always score above the most common answer. You're always better off going for something obvious than for something obviously wrong. If "Texas" is ruled incorrect, player C gets +4 points (two above the most common correct answer).

That's the gist of it. Each person running a game adds little rules here and there but those are the basics.

General Rules
Spoiler:

  • The object of the game is to out-think everyone by picking answers to questions that are the most common (Sheep) or least common (Reverse Sheep), but still correct.
  • Example Sheep question: "Name a confusing sci-fi TV series." A good answer might be Lost and a bad answer might be Land of the Giants.
  • Example Reverse Sheep question: "Name a show in which Morena Baccarin was a regular cast member." Firefly might be a bad answer, but V might be a good answer. (Unless everyone is trying to go as obscure as possible).
  • Scores are tallied according to the number of players answering that question. Sheep answers are tallied as negative. Reverse Sheep answers are tallied as positive. The lowest score wins.
  • There is no such thing as wrong answer for a Sheep question. Wrong answers in Reverse Sheep are scored two points above the most common answer.
  • You may not cheat by using Google, Wikipedia, Star Trek Encyclopedia, etc. Use only what's in your head.
  • Please send in your answers to me via PM. Place only one answer per line, without numbers, set info, or the question itself. Add {sd} to the end of the answer, not the beginning. Those who do not do this will be penalized 20 points right off the bat.
  • Note: Be creative with your answers, but don't be stupid.
  • Sheep questions are marked by an S:, Reverse Sheep questions are marked by an R:.

Game-Specific Rules
Spoiler:

  • Unique Bonus: Reverse Sheep questions will generate additional bonus (negative) points according to the following:
    1 Unique is awarded -15
2 Uniques are awarded -10 each
3 Uniques are awarded -6 each
4 Uniques are awarded -3 each
5+ Uniques are awarded -1 each
  • Slam Dunks {sd} Players have the power of multipliers in their hands. Each player is given five (5) Slam Dunks ({sd}s) which they use by adding {sd} to the end of their answer. Slam Dunks have different effects depending on the question you use them in:
    • In Sheep questions, the {sd} adds 1 to the Multiplier. You are allowed to use up to all 5 of your {sd}s on any given question.
    • In Reverse Sheep questions, you can use a single {sd} to turn the question into a sheep question for you. However, if your answer is wrong, it does nothing. I will answer any questions you have about Slam Dunks.

  • Note: Eligible answers will be sci-fi TV series/shows, not TV movies and not series from any other genre. I'm using the term "TV series" to indicate a show like Star Trek: The Next Generation, not the whole Star Trek franchise (TOS, TNG, DS9, etc.). Miniseries are eligible, though you don't have to micromanage the fact that Battlestar Galactica started as a miniseries before it became a weekly (so to speak) series unless it really matters to your answer. "Sci-fi" should be science fiction, not fantasy (Xena, Game of Thrones, etc.). Please don't get too cute or argumentative.

And another reminder: Please send in your answers to me via PM. Place only one answer per line, without numbers or the question itself. Add {sd} to the end of the answer, not the beginning. Those who do not do this will be penalized 20 points right off the bat.

I will also correct mistakes you may have made when originally sending me your answers at a cost of 10 points.

I will take no more than 20 participants not including myself (though will make special dispensations for anyone who has run a Sheep game in the past) not and plan on starting some time early next week.

The game is FULL, and will start rolling at 11 a.m. Pacific time on Monday, 1/21.

    Now on to the questions.

    The Questions

    1. R: Name a crew member of the good ship Serenity.
    2. S:What was the best Star Trek series?
    3. R: Name a series that was a reboot or reimagining of a television series and aired at least five episodes, other than Battlestar Galactica.
    4. S: Which series not named Firefly was canceled too soon?

    6. S: Which actor was the best Doctor Who?
    7. S: Who was the hottest non-human character?
    8. R: Name a series not produced in the United States that aired at least 12 episodes.
    9. S: Best signature line or catch phrase from a character?

    14. S: Best theatrical feature film of a TV series property?
    15. S: Best animated series?
    16. S: Best series spun off from another TV series?
    17. R: Name a series in which the plot revolves around the characters trying to return home.
    18. R: Name a series that does not take place primarily aboard a spaceship.
    19. S: You're headed into a space battle for the fate of your planet--which ship do you want to be commanding?

    I'm in.

I'm sure we'll have a lot of vigorous discussions about what is or isn't "sci-fi".

What happens if you slam dunk a unique answer for a reverse sheep question?

I would say to use IMDb or allmovie.com like we do for the challenges, but that would be a reference source.

I guess submit answers using your best judgment, with the usual Sheep caveat that sometimes it's better to play it safe. If something doesn't pass the sniff test, we can debate it as it comes up.

(Of course, there are no wrong answers to a Sheep question.)

Yea thats going to be very interesting. Looks like there are only 4 questions where that will come into play, though.

For number eight, did you mean a show not produced in the U.S. that ran in the U.S. for at least 12 episodes?

    PM sent.

I put all my slam ducks on a question with an answer so objectively correct that it should be unanimous. I guess we'll see how many people forgot that particular series/character/spaceship/whatever, because I'm sure everyone who remembers it will agree with me.

I put all my slam dunks on the answer where I couldn't even think of another possible answer.

I didn't like how I couldn't answer truthfully on most of them.

Gonna get killed anyway, so I suppose I just should have.

I'm not doing this round, because I know there are several that would hose me (Dr. Who ones). Good questions, though. I shall follow to see how everyone does.

Yeah, I struggled with the same thing. I don't agree with most of my sheep answers, but I just didn't see the truth scoring very well.

In, but I fucked up already. Revision sent too.

This is a very broad category. Should be interesting.

I thought of an answer that was better than the one of the ones I gave, but it's not worth the point penalty to change it.

Me too ... but I just sent in a revised answer list without remembering about the penalty. Oh well ... it's not like that rule isn't bold-faced so only a complete idiot could miss it

I had a hard time on a lot of the sheep questions. I'm just not sure on how everyone's sci-fi tastes skew.

Yeah, better to make the pool of answers just a little less obscure. Between the vast pool of answers and the question of whether something counts as sci-fi, I almost just made it a Sheep question but it really made more sense as a Reverse. Probably should have reworked it somehow.

People who did not match me on the question I slam ducked are wrong and deserve to be mocked. Rest assured that when you reveal the answers, they will be.
