There's never any guarantee the idol chosen will be every single American's idea of an idol. By that criteria, I'd never watch the show. Here are my past contestant rankings based on songs I know.

1. Carrie Underwood - She's the only one I can actually sing along with several of her songs. It'd be notable in that I don't listen to much country music (except Country ballads), but Carrie's kind of pop country.

2. Kelly Clarkson - I only vaguely know a few of her songs. The only one I can really say I like (that I remember) is Never Again. She can undoubtedly sing, though.

3. Ruben Studdard - I like his his cover of Celebrate Me Home. I listened to his CD as he was kind of touted as "Baby Luther" (Vandross). He did a remake of a Luther song. It just made me want to listen to Luther, though.

I did a once-over of most of the other CD's but nothing grabbed me. That said, musical taste is subjective. It doesn't mean I don't think they should have won. I tend to think the person who wins is exactly who should win -- that's who got the votes.

This season I was rooting for Candice and Amber, but only in the sense that they sing music I listen to. Then again, my "fandom" goes only as far as the show. I know the odds are they will not put out CD's I'll care anything about. Nobody has so far (not even Jennifer Hudson). To me, Angie is the female equivalent of WGWG. Sure she's talented, and I'm sure she'll have a great career, but I probably won't listen to her music. But that's a reflection on me, not her.

I loved Adam Lambert on the show, but I don't own his CD. Same for Bo Bice. And Fantasia... even though I like Gospel-tinged R&B, Fantasia is... something else. I'm tired when I finish listening to her sing.

I watch AI for the performances. If someone liked Angie, you got to see almost a full season of performances from her. I got to see almost a full season of performances from Amber. Same for Kree fans. If Kree won, I wouldn't decry the viewing demographics, makeup of the show, etc. I'd just congratulate Kree on winning and enjoy the performances I had (and still have) from Candice.

It's hard to be a star in the arts. When I watch these reality shows and I hear about superstars on the stage, I cringe. Most won't even be stars, but superstars? Not likely. There are only a handful (maybe two handfuls) of people at any given time who fit that description. It's like predicting every other high school basketball player is going to be the next LeBron. Mostly, not.

I've been thinking they should bring back alums to judge. Somehow they stole that idea from me despite wearing my foil hat to protect my intellectual property.
