Is it the norm to have more than one TV in the living room?

I have had 2 tvs in the living room for over 20 yrs. For the most part,2 tv's are on for most of the weekend and weeknights when watching blu-rays or dvds on one tv while watching sports on the other one. The volume is almost never turned on while watching sports on weekdays.

Never seen that before. I like audio when I watch sports.

Re: Is it the norm to have more than one TV in the living room?

Only place I've seen more than one TV in a room is at a bar or a showroom. (Speaking of which, I wish they'd always have captions on TVs in bars or restaurants.)
That does seem like overkill, if I was watching sports, I think I'd like the audio, and when I watch a movie, I want to focus on the movie.
I might be an outlier though, I don't have more than one TV in my house.

No, but I do have my laptop sitting next to my usual spot on the couch. I have an HDHomerun set up so I can watch TV on any PC in the house and I can stream all of ESPN's stuff, so I frequently will have a game on muted on the laptop while I watch other stuff with my wife or kid.

If you have to ask if it's normal, I have a sneaking suspicion that you already know it's not.

Re: Is it the norm to have more than one TV in the living room?

I went to a Halloween party where there were two 50" screens in the living room, one placed directly above the other. I asked the house owners about it, who said they use them so they can each watch their own program (or play a game) when one doesn't like the other's program, but it still gives them snuggle time on the couch. The husband uses wireless headphones to do this. I found it quite odd.

if only they made televisions with the capability to put a picture within the picture... not sure what they would call that technology, but I think it would be useful!

I wouldn't say it's the norm, but you are not alone. Me and a few of my friends each have 2-3 TVs in living room during football season. Usually bring in a few 42" or 32" flat panels in addition to main TV.

Yeah, definitely not the norm. Not sure why you need one TV for one type of entertainment, and another set for another kind. Just buy one set you'll be happy with for everything.

Re: Is it the norm to have more than one TV in the living room?

I have zero televisions in my living room.

A couple of years ago on Sunday afternoon I was visiting a friend, and we went next door, where his neighbors had something like six or seven televisions in their living room, all tuned to a different NFL game. It was one of the weirdest and saddest things I'd ever seen.

Re: Is it the norm to have more than one TV in the living room?

That Best Buy salesman knew what he was doing.

"Oh, you watch sports AND movies? Well, you'll need this TV for the sports, and this one for the movies. Don't forget your gold plated HDMI cables."

Spoiler:
And yes I know that some tvs are better at displaying the blacks/whites of a movie, and some are better at displaying the fast motion of sports. I'm just taking that to an extreme.
And yes I know also that whatever joke was there I likely just ruined by explaining.

Why would you suspect it's the norm? Does the majority of your friends have more than one? I've never been to anyone's home with more than one TV. Sports bars is another story.

Re: Is it the norm to have more than one TV in the living room?

I don't have two TVs in one room, but I often use my DVR to similar effect. When sports are on, I watch until a commercial comes on, pause the channel, and then watch either a recorded program or another live sporting event on the other tuner. Then after 10 minutes or so (or until another commercial comes on), I switch back to the first sports event and skip commercials until it gets live again. I only do this when I'm alone, because I think people think I'm nuts when I do this, and it probably only makes sense to me because I've got the remote.

That sounds like what everyone in the known universe with a DVR does :P
(only problem is that I sometimes get engrossed with the other program and forget to change back to the live programming)

Back to the OP: Are both of those TVs 20 years old? Cause that adds a whole new layer to this discussion...

But do both of those TV's work? In those days, I knew quite a few people who had a working TV that sat on top of a broken TV.

My 90 year old uncle had that up until he died a year ago. We always told him we were going to take the old one to the dump and he would yell at us not to, he'd just have to waste money on a stand for the newer one.

That's what we did at my house. I never thought it was weird back then, but now...

Re: Is it the norm to have more than one TV in the living room?

My last place I had two TVs in my bedroom. I pretty much only used them at the same time during the NFL season.

My wife won't let me do this anymore.
