Might have been the worst ep of the entire run

I thought it was probably the worst episode of the season. I didn't even bother finishing the episode after the last commercial break.

They pretty much ruined the Fat Tony character in his last couple of appearances, so I didn't expect much. Is Groening spending too much of his time working on Futurama again?

Based on the design I assumed Jim Parsons was the guest star. I don't think I ever would have guessed Steve Carrell.

And what was up with the Lisa eating bugs storyline? Is vegetarians eating insects a real thing? (I know people eat the, I just don't see how they fit into a vegetarian diet).

If you read the insider books on the history of the Simpsons, Groening has had very little to do with the show since it moved away from the Tracey Ullman Show. The Simpsons as we know them on television are largely due to Sam Simon first, and Jim Brooks second. Sam Simon was the driving force behind the show for its first four years and laid the groundwork, only leaving after a massive salary dispute.

There are reports that Groening's suggestions to the writers were basically ignored and that all he cared about were the merchandising deals.

Damn, I hope so. Futurama is great. Simpsons was great. Fifteen years ago.

No, it's just their insistence that every episode have a Lisa storyline.

For a character (correct me if I'm wrong) we've never seen before, it felt so bizarre to have an episode about him. There was nothing funny or interesting about Dan Gillick, so I couldn't figure out why I was supposed to care what happened to him. Most of the time it didn't feel like I was watching The Simpsons. This episode was like when they put the pilot of a spin-off show into the main series, like that episode of Married With Children about the college radio station.
