Toy Hunter - Travel Channel (Wednesdays)

Anyone watch this show? I don't really care about the value (no idea if it's even close) but more for the nostalgia factor seeing toys I completely forgot I once had.

The main guy seems like a giant fuck nozzle.

I like it. It is cool to see old toys that I played with as a kid.

I like it. And Jordan seems nice enough to me. There's been several episodes where he's offered the person MORE than they originally asked for something. It's definitely got a great nostalgia factor going for me too. :)

This. I watched one episode and realized that the guy was so unlikable I didn't want to ever see it again.

I DVR it. My 6 year old son loves it. Between my ebay-ing and this show he really is understanding the value of things. I mean he still destroys his stuff and loses pieces like a space cadet and really has no concept of the value of a dollar, but he's always curious of his toys and comics values.

"how much is this worth dad?"

"$30"

"How much is that"

"that's like 3 transformers"

"Ooooh"

This convo happens a few times a week on average the past few months.

It's cool to see some of the toys he uncovers, but he really undervalues everything to the point that it all feels like a huge set-up (which it probably is anyway). $50 for a MIB Yoda Dagobah playset? Out of the box they go for around $60 on ebay, boxed are easily over $100 (I only know that because I checked after the show).

Yeah, I was wondering about the values placed on the toys as well. But when it comes to these programs, I go in assuming it's staged...

I enjoy the show but most other shows in this genre try to make you feel like you might have "gold" waiting to be discovered in your garage; "Toy Hunter" makes me feel like the few toys I've squirreled away over the years aren't worth digging out.

Again, the guy is a super douche. I know you have to make a buck, but this guy is a d bag.

I'm not see why anyone thinks he's a douche at all.

Show might be staged to some extent but what he pays for a toy is his buying price which will always be lower than what he can sell it for.

He isn't buying these toys to keep, he is selling them.

He also can't buy a toy worth $100 for $100, he will try to get it for as low as possible to make money when he sells it.

Needs to pay for traveling costs too.

Yeah, don't understand the douche nozzle comments. Seems like an alright dude.

It seems like his offers are on average half of the value. That's fair. It's better for these folks to get half than nothing (which is what they'll get without targeting the right buyer)

PhantomStranger 11-16-12 12:40 AM

Re: Toy Hunter - Travel Channel (Wednesdays)

Most resellers only want to pay about 50% of the market cost for an item from an individual. It works that way in most collectible fields. That markup is their profit. If you want full value from an item, go on eBay and auction the item off. Of course eBay takes their cut, though it is not 50%.

Xander 11-16-12 09:41 AM

Re: Toy Hunter - Travel Channel (Wednesdays)

Yeah, he paid $50 for something he's going to resell for maybe $100 if he's lucky. He also drove/flew to that person's house to get it. Seems reasonable to me. I don't get the "douche" comments at all. As I said, he's often giving people MORE than they were wanted to get for an item because it was worth more. And he comes off as pretty likable to me.

Agree with the last few posters. He's not a collector, he has to make money on what he buys. He's likable enough and seems fairly knowledgeable. I find the show entertaining. If someone wants full market value they can dig through their own shit and go sell it themselves.

IIRC, there was also that giant Speeder Bike he sold for next to no profit(probably didn't even cover travel expenses) just to make a dad and his kid happy.

I can't stand the fucker.

Because he kept shrieking and flailing away about he loved old toys based on DC Comics characters, and then proceeded to pronounce Darkseid 'Dark-SEED'. Over and over and over again.

I like and hate the show. I like it because I frequently see all the toys I used to have from 1976 to 1985. I hate the show because I frequently see all the toys I used to have from 1976 to 1985 :(

I am not sure you can really fault him for that mistake. When I was a child reading the comics, that is how I thought it was pronounced. It was only years later that I discovered how Darkseid's name is actually pronounced. If you only read the comics, there is no real context where you could figure out the official pronunciation.

He comes off as very queeny. But his enthusiasm is genuine, methinks.

Exactly. Even with that in mind, I'm sure I've heard the proper pronunciation but it's been Darkseed for so long for me, that's the way it's gonna be.

Now that's a "douchey" thing to say. I know lifelong comic collectors that still get it wrong.

Don't tell anyone but I was pronouncing Thanos wrong all these years.

whotony 11-16-12 04:36 PM

Re: Toy Hunter - Travel Channel (Wednesdays)

I see only one way to pronounce Thanos.

Also Darkseed as a name is dopey even for a comic book. Darksied always made sense to me mostly because it sounds right and it has the same letters.

Re: Toy Hunter - Travel Channel (Wednesdays)

He was freakin' DarkSIDE in the animation, on Smallville, Justice League/Justice League Unlimited, in fandom circles... I was reading Fourth World comics since as long as I can remember, and there was never any doubt (in my mind, anyhow) how to pronounce 'Darkseid'.

At least SOMEONE on the production staff should have tipped him off...

Michael Corvin 11-16-12 07:14 PM

Re: Toy Hunter - Travel Channel (Wednesdays)

If they wanted it pronounced Darkside, maybe they shouldn't have had that typo in his name all these years. :D
