 I thought it was pretty damn good. Yeah it's a network show and isn't as gritty as something on HBO, but I thought it worked. I like that it's outside the box of what CBS would normally do in the crime drama genre.
Quaid was a good choice IMO to play Lamb. I think he has the presence and charisma to play a rugged old time sheriff. I love seeing Chiklis playing a full out villain this time around, especially a Chicago Mobster. Man, Vegas was practically a wasteland back then. Just a dinky gambling town in the middle of the desert. It's amazing how much it's evolved over the years. Going back to the discussion on whether or not this is a procedural. I don't think you can really classify this as a full out procedural like a CSI or NCIS. Alot of the plot seems to be carrying over to the next episode. The guy who committed the murder is linked to Savino. IIRC, his guy said they have a man on the inside who will take care of him so he won't talk. And now the murder of the corrupt sheriff is also linked to Savino and his goons. Las Vegas was a corrupt town operated by crime syndicates, so of course crimes and murders are going to happen and Ralph Lamb will have to do his job as sheriff. In the meantime, it appears Savino is becoming a more prominent and powerful figure in the Vegas underworld. I'm sold on this show. I'm in for the season. Definitely will be sticking with this show. |

I liked Quaid and Chiklis... solid show. I'll be back

Re: Vegas -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/25/12
I liked it. It took a few minutes to get going (we get it...he's a rancher, he is a mobster...) but after that it settled in very nicely. Quaid is an excellent choice for the "hero". He plays that gruff part perfectly. And as a huge Shield fan, seeing Michael Chiklis as a full blown gangster makes me happy. Hopefully Carrie-Anne Moss gets more to do...see more or less felt like a secretary in this episode. As well, the supporting cast was good too...just need more to do.
It is going to be very interesting to see where the show goes, since there is a lot of things that happened during that time in Vegas. I am in for the long haul. |
Re: Vegas -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/25/12
As soon as he said "but I'm not a cop" and the other guy said "well you used to be an MP" I knew this wasn't a show for me. The dead body popping up in the first 10 minutes and this being on CBS just weren't good signs for me.

Re: Vegas -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/25/12
^ So in essence, you don't like CBS or the kind of programming it predominantly has nowadays. Understandable. I don't care for or watch any Reality TV myself, so I really can't talk about not giving shows a chance based on premise.
I think this show will get a bit more serialized as it moves along. Problem with something like this is that if it gets too serialized, it will have trouble getting new viewers as it progresses. I think it will be more like a story of the week with an over-arcing story as well, kind of like Burn Notice. Each episode will have Quaid solve the problem, know that Chiklis is somehow involved, but will ultimately not be able to link him to anything while operating within the law. |

Like Dr. DVD said, Ah the ever popular and every vicious circle that is the choice that networks have when dealing with a new show. Make it serialized and try something different but make it hard to get new viewers and in turn has low ratings. Or something easily digestible that can be had every week or sporadically. While I hate procedurals, I understand them in a business sense! But yeah I’ll give Vegas a few more shots before fully calling it a procedural. |
Re: Vegas -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/25/12
So while watching this I was thinking it's alright, but will probably appeal to an older audience.
Seems that was true -- Most Watched Tuesday @ 10 Fall Premiere in a decade. Lowest key demo on a Tuesday premiere in 7.5 years (Century City). |
Re: Vegas -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/25/12
Wow, that might be the most generic pilot I've ever seen. Besides Chicklis, Quaid and the setting it had absolutely nothing going for it. Huge disappointment considering the people involved.

So, Longmire in the city?
|
Re: Vegas -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/25/12
I did think of Longmire...
|
Re: Vegas -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/25/12
Except Longmire had better characters and better plot lines. This one was bottom of the barrel even for a procedural.

Re: Vegas -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/25/12
This was a mixed bag for me.
I liked the Michael Chiklis side of things. Early Vegas is a rich place to mine for stories. The production values were nice. The case of the week wasn't interesting at all. Dennis Quaid's character was pretty silly and one-note. In the airport fight he gets punched square in the face and there's no blood? That story about him solving some crime in WWII didn't sell me on him being some kind of supercop. And that "shootout" with the car at the end was ridiculous. It didn't help that Quaid had that same frown throughout the show. Hopefully, in the future they'll follow the Longmire example of using the case of the week to explore the characters and the setting. We'll see. |

Chiklis stuffing a bunch of spaghetti into his face: such a worn-out hackneyed cliche. "All gangsters are Italian and all Italians eat spaghetti 3 times a day every day." I'll probably give it another chance anyway. |
Re: Vegas -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/25/12
I taped it and then fast forwarded and saw a bunch of guys in cowboy hats and I skipped it and watched Boardwalk Empire instead.

Crime Story nailed the period/setting much better and Farina is a much better cop lead than Quaid. |
Re: Vegas -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/25/12
at least two actors from shows Fox canned last year were in this, one of whom I expect to be a regular or at least semi regular
Quaid and Chiklis will keep me watching hell, Chiklis could star in a show about professional solitaire players and I'd probably watch |
Re: Vegas -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/25/12
Boy, you guys are harsh. It's fine, and I'll stick with it to see where it goes.

Re: Vegas -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/25/12
I liked it but I thought by the end of the first episode having Chiklis and the mob already going "We may have to take care of the sheriff" a bit much.
I mean first of all, he was going after one of your employees for murder, and not even one you would have authorized so they should have been happy giving the guy up. Second, at this time, there is not a wiff anywhere of "Oh no, the mob is running the casinos, we've got to clean them up" mentality by anyone. You'd at least think, in the beginning, until it becomes necessary, Quaid and Chiklis could actually have a more friendly relationship. |
Re: Vegas -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 9/25/12
I really liked this. The cast and setting made it for me even if the central murder plot wasn't very compelling.
