Yeah, I figure if I get roped back into the show, I can watch s4 after s5. Apparently it's pretty good, save for the last episode.

Kim Coates deserves an emmy for his acting during "the scene".

Re: Sons of Anarchy -- 90 Minute Season Premiere -- "Sovereign" -- 9/11/12

I thought that was a pretty solid 90 minutes.

So it appears the events of this episode take place 5-6 months after last season's finale.

I enjoyed the introduction of all the new characters, especially Smits and Perrineau's. Pope appears to be one badass no holds barred villain. I mean shit, what he did to Tig's daughter was fucking ruthless. I agree that was some great shit from Kim Coates in that whole sequence. I liked how he shot the cleaner without a 2nd thought. Cool to see that they also brought back Rockmund Dunbar. Machete and Aceveda are eh.....So they are Mexican army and acting as double agents for the CIA? I got the impression from last season's finale they were undercover CIA.

Not sure what to think of Smits character yet. Although I got a kick out of his introduction seeing him pound Gemma from behind. I loved their banter in that scene, especially when she called him a "Spic Pimp" BTW, for those who don't know the dark haired older woman in Nero's brothel was Wanda De Jesus, who is his real life girlfriend.

Now that Jax is President and Bobby is VP, what exactly is Clay's role now? Jax's excuse for keeping him alive seems kind of weak. Was Clay really that instrumental in that deal Jax talked about?

Lastly, regarding the scene with Unser getting his ass kicked. The camera focused on the assailant with the metal leg. Are we supposed to know who that is?

I thought it was pretty obvious that it was Oscar Pistorius. I hadn't heard he was joining the cast this season.

I don't think it was anywhere near six months. Gemma still had bruises on her face and they hadn't buried Piney yet.

The foot belongs to the nomad with the fake leg that we saw resting on the fat guy's shoulder.

That's true but the kids seemed so much bigger, and Clay's out of the hospital.

Great start to the new season. How does Tig not become completely unhinged, and what does he do next?

Sutter has said that this season picks up about 3 or 4 weeks after the end of last season.

Thanks. My mistake on the time differential from last season to this.

Perrineau is no Giancarlo Esposito, no matter how much Sutter wants him to be.

Good action out of the gate. I hope they can keep their shit together this season.

Ah, dont watch Justified so can't speak to the quality. I watched most of the first season and I failed to connect to it nor did it entertain me.

Generally speaking, when someone says something is kicking something else's ass I assume they are referring to actual quantifiable stat, hence my thinking you meant ratings. My apologies for the confusion.

I have no idea about his tweeting either so you may very well be right.

There is always debate about quality. No matter how good show X is, there will always be people who disagree with the majority.

In this case since Justified fails to entertain or connect with me, I obviously disagee about its quality compared to SOA.

See the Breaking Bad vs Wire discussions in the Breaking Bad thread for a heated discourse about quality.

They talked about this in last eyars finale. The Irish "kings" flat out said that they will only deal with the Sons if Clay is at the table. Machete and Acevedo said that if the Sons dont broker the deal between the Irish and the Cartel for the heavy guns, they will unleash RICO on the Sons, thus destroying the club. So, the only way Jax has to keep the club around is to keep Clay around.

As to Clay's role now, he seems to be just a member. And dealing with the Irish.

That scene with Tig and his daughter might be the most disturbing thing I've ever seen on tv. My heart was racing. Such powerful imagery and then that scream of "daddy!" Whew.

I guess I'll be in the minority, but I thought his acting during this scene was atrocious. Worthy of a Razzie.

Who is the actor playing Pope's right hand? He looked really familiar.

I think he is just painfully miscast. Maybe he'll grow into the role a bit though?

Agreed. Huge Coates fan but the entire room either laughed or groaned. Stunned he played it so goofy and unrealistic.
