Doctor Who S07E01: Asylum of the Daleks

http://www.g33kpron.com/wp-content/u...the-Daleks.jpg

Synopsis:
Spoiler:
Kidnapped by his oldest foe, the Doctor is forced on an impossible mission - to a place even the Daleks are too terrified to enter.... the Asylum. A planetary prison confining the most terrifying and insane of their kind, the Doctor and the Ponds must find an escape route. But with Amy and Rory's relationship in meltdown, and an army of mad Daleks closing in, it is up to the Doctor to save their lives, as well as the Pond's marriage.

And in case anyone missed them, the Pond Life episodes that lead up to this episode:

This will be a split season, with five episodes airing, then a break, the Christmas special on Christmas (obvo), and the remaining eight episodes airing in 2013. Also, like last season, all the episodes will air on the same day on the BBC and on BBC America.

Unlike last season, this season will be far less serial, with most episodes being standalone.

I've never watched this on BBC America before. How terrible are the commercial breaks, since the show isn't scripted with them in mind?

I just rewatched Let's Kill Hitler & it was very disruptive. It's usually not too bad though. It depends on the episode.

The big problem (if like me, you've seen most episodes only on BBCA) is you're never really sure if you're seeing the complete episode or not. For example, the Christmas specials seem to run long. BBCA will play them long the first night, but cut them down to fit an hour with commercials for reruns.

My guide for tonight has me a little worried:
The 9pm premiere runs 59 minutes, but 65 mins for the late night rerun. Limited commercials for the first airing makes the most sense, but who knows...

Re: Doctor Who S07E01: Asylum of the Daleks

Tonight's episode was in a 50-minute slot on BBC One in the UK, so the BBCA 9pm broadcast should have fewer than normal commercials (last year, BBCA said every new Who episode would premiere unedited). The later repeat in a 65-minute slot should be the full episode with the normal amount of commercials. Future repeats (like the 8pm repeat next Saturday) will probably have 2-3 minutes trimmed to fit a one-hour slot.

Well, I liked but did not love this episode. I felt it moved too fast for its own good. Would have done better to take a breath every so often.

Also Moffat must have a thing for companions that the Doctor will know are coming to a tragic end, as that is Jenna-Louise Coleman as Oswin, aka the girl who will become the Doctor's next companion.

Edit: Although now that I think about it, there's nothing stopping them from making the new companion Oswin's twin sister or an ancestor of Oswin, like they did with Gwyneth/Gwen in Torchwood.

One thing I 100% did not like is the human/Dalek nanobot conversion. The Daleks aren't Cybermen and the casing is just that: Casing. It would be like people turning into medieval knights by growing armor. Doesn't work like that. As much as I hate Daleks in Manhattan, at least they understood how Daleks work.

Spoiler:
And two Harry Potter alums in next week's episode, along with dinosaurs, of course!

It was okay. Did feel rushed, but I think that was the idea. Kind of a 'nail biter' sort of thing.

She looked good in that makeup.

Spoiler:
the actress who plays the new companion is in this episode? That kinnda explains the picture I saw of what looked like Amy and another girl with a bunch of Daleks..I remember they did the same thing with Freema Agyeman. She played her own cousin and was the companion the very next season.

Re: Doctor Who S07E01: Asylum of the Daleks

Yeah, Jenna-Louise Coleman played Oswin. This is a different situation than Eve Myles or Freema Agyeman, though, as those actresses were cast for bit parts and RTD liked them so much that he ended up featuring them as bigger characters later. Here, JLC was cast, announced as the new companion, and then featured heavily in the first episode of the season where we know she will become the companion.

Why are you using spoilers?

You're talking about the girl in the control room right? The one who was revealed at the end to be... she's the new companion? She has more charisma going on than Pond, that's good news. But Pond did look good all made up.

Yeah, Oswin, which of course leads to a whole host of questions.

The wink was for everyone else so some poor mod didn't get a million "OMG PERSONAL ATTACK" emails.

As for you, Mabuse, I offer no winks and ask for none in return. Jerk.

Reported.

That's clearly a personal attack.

I liked the episode alot. And (sigh) I think the new companion looks promising for yet another contemporary 20-something gal. I'm always hoping for something different, but I guess young female hotties are the only thing the modern audience really wants as companions. Actually, since we've had both Amy & Rory for a good while I suppose I shouldn't bitch too much.

Can we reserve spoiler tags for future episodes and not discussion of this episode?

Modern audience? That trend for companions has been going on for nearly 50 years.

Anyone know if they are doing Doctor Who Confidentials for the episodes this season?

Yes Groucho, we can do that. I'll just say that this is fair warning: The Doctor Who show threads may have spoilers in them by the time the British airing finishes (around noon PST).

The episode has aired now on BBC America.

I liked it too, a good start for series 7. I didn't realize that was JLC in the episode.... OOPS OMFG SHOULD I HAVE PUT THAT IN SPOILERS...

SPOILER: There are no more DW Confidentials, sadly.

I enjoyed it. Yeah, it felt a bit rushed but I guess that's what you get with a bunch a self contained stories instead of a bunch a two-parters.

I liked the new companion but i love Amy so she's gonna need to bring it.
