Re: Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler quit American Idol
They should just put Jimmy Iovine in as a judge. He's the only one these last two seasons that gave consistent harsh-when-necessary feedback and he's established with the audience. Then they could get either a name singer like Mariah or a past contestant and give the panel the artist perspective (and star power).
I wonder if they'd ever consider going to more of a SYTYCD model with a rotating judge spot, perhaps an expert in whatever genre they're doing that week.

It's official ... Mariah Carey has joined "American Idol."
The announcement was made moments ago at the TV Critics Association Summer Press tour in Beverly Hills.
The 42-year-old singer is rumored to have signed a deal worth $12 million for her first year ... the same amount of $$$ Jennifer Lopez made during he first year with the show.
So far, it's still unclear if Randy Jackson will remain on board.
'Idol' still has one more spot to fill at the judge's table ... and there are rumors Miley Cyrus and Adam Lambert could be in the running.

Not a big Carey fan but I do find it intersting that a real singer will be judging AI for the first time ever. It was kind of weird to see J-Lo critiquing someone like Jessica Sanchez when her own musical output is primarily auto tuned songs about shaking ass on the dance floor.

The hiring of Carey makes me feel good about my decision to skip this next season. Just another cheerleader.

Seriously, I'd like to have Stevie Wonder as a judge. Music cred thru the roof, and would certainly be judging solely on singing ability.

Been a huge fan of Mariah for 20+ years, so I approve the choice even though these talent shows are so over-paying the judges.

I have not watched in years, from what I have seen this show is really American Judges, all these shows obsess about who the judges are, personally I got bored of judges years ago, they have to say something EVERY single time someone sings and they state the same lines over and over again.
No one even cares about who wins anymore.

Re: Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler quit American Idol
Exactly. I would normally agree with DJariya about the judges being overpaid, but then I read the number of people who make the judges the focal point of their viewing decision. I tune in for the performances, and I don't need a judge to tell me when I like them. But that's me.
I do like judges that give constructive criticism more than judges of the "you suck" variety. To me, telling someone they weren't as good as the others, or even getting specific as to why (tone, pitchiness, stage presence, etc.) is fine. Simon's old standby of, "It's like some ghastly wedding singer who won't stop singing," provides the public spectacle a segment of the population seems to crave, and thus brings ratings, but it's not my cup of tea. Personally, J.Lo was as good a judge for me as Simon is for those people, because J.Lo talked about what moved her. Was it worthy of all the standing O's? Probably not. But the people I saw her raving over were doing some good things. I don't listen to heavy rock or metal, but when J.Lo raved over James Durbin's performance of "Heavy Metal", I was right there with her, because that performance moved me. I was rocking out. I didn't know who Zakk Wylde was before the performance, but I did afterwards (one of the few times Steven Tyler was useful on the show for me).
I don't know how long it'll last, but as a replacement for Paula/J.Lo, Mariah is fine. I'd actually rather have another strong rock-type artist (but more current) to replace Tyler. Not Adam Lambert (he was great on the show, but his output since hasn't impressed me). Maybe someone like Chris Martin. Or better yet, maybe someone from this list. (I don't know who because I don't know the CD's, but the list would probably trigger ideas from you guys). I know when I heard Josh Krajcik do "The Pretender" (Foo Fighters) on The X Factor, I rocked out again. I'd like a judge who brings credibility in that arena to the show. Because as J.Lo said, we can have a Pop Idol, Gospel Idol, Jazz Idol, R&B Idol, Heavy Metal Idol... I enjoyed Season 10 the most for that reason. Good performance of what I listen to, and good performance of what I normally don't.

Meh. The judges don't really need to have an opinion since they are always reading the producers' notes.

Re: Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler quit American Idol
I'm trying to hold out judgement because I've always said I watch the show for the talent, not the judges, but I'm having a real hard time picturing sitting through having to see her face on my screen for hours ever week. What's Nigel thinking? It's like some scene from a horror movie where you think you got away, turn around, and run smack dab into Jason. One minute I'm hearing Puffy/P.Diddy/whatever and just when that subsides a bit and I'm thinking we'll get a judge who can actually sing, or at least has a track record of finding and evaluating singers, we get Nicki Minaj. I get the desire to go for a younger hipper demo, but ... ugh. Then again, I wasn't a fan of the J.Lo decision but unlike most I think she actually ended up being a decent judge. We'll see.
