Wow they don't even try to make a decent phrase anymore.

I think it stems from confusion of what constitutes"catching on."

A. a catch phrase becomes popular and X character uses it to the bitter end.
B. a catch phrase that becomes a part of the pop culture lexicon and used outside of a television show.

Most of the answers don't apply to A, but could to B.

I've been trying to think of some attempts made by Seinfeld and this was the only one I can think of. Most of the popular sayings from Seinfeld caught on after only one episode. Numerous times one episode would feature pretty much the same line numerous times, but would never pop up again. For example, "George is getting upset, or George is getting thirsty" or whatever. Or the Heeeeelllllllllo bit when Jerry was making fun of his girlfriend's stomach.

I suppose, "Hello Newman" might count, but I don't think that was every meant to become a catchphrase. Unless I'm missing some, basically the only lines that made it into numerous episodes were "Get out" and "Hello Newman"

That is pretty interesting to think about. They probably had dozens upon dozens of phrases that are memorable, but were never used outside of that particular episode. "Yada, Yada" and "Serenity now!" should have lasted longer than a single episode.

I think this is one of the great things about the show. There was very little "recycling" of material that was a sure thing. They continually took risks and kept it fresh. Sometimes there were failures, but it sure did work a lot of the time.

In terms of phraseology, it was really the inverse of the standard formula. Instead of a show where one or more characters have a frequently-used catch phrase, it seemed like nearly every week we'd get a new memorable phrase that lived on around the water cooler but was likely to never return in the show itself.

Don't forget possibly the most well known: "No soup for you"!

I agree, but I'm thinking more along the lines of a call-back versus abusing a catch phrase "how you doin!" every other episode.

Apparently, when they penned that episode ("The Yada, Yada") the writers thought that "anti-dentite" would be the phrase that caught on, not "yada, yada."

I've heard "What the What?" a few times on 30 Rock, but I don't think that's catching on.

This one qualifies I'd say. It seemed like they tried to make this into another "not that there's anything wrong with it" and "no soup for you!" but it was just awful. Hated that episode.

Yeah, that was just an embarrassing episode. It was such an awful, unfunny line in first place so I cringed every time they tried to force it upon us.

I remember seeing a commercial for 2.5 Men like 75 times one week where the weiner dad said something like "kitchy mc yum yum," like they were trying to get this phrase to catch on as the 00s "Have mercy."
