PPs 'single' is probably the best one I've heard on idol. Granted it didn't have much to do with him, but it had a nice Arcade Fire/Mumford & Sons vibe.

Love Phillip's single....and I think that might have won it for him. Def a great vibe to that song. He knows who is he and he never swayed the whole season. They kept wanting him to stick to original melodies, but that was not who is is, and he never compromised. I wish the best for him.
Jessica has an amazing voice, but I think she tried to hard to please, and not sure who she is as an artist. Has a lot of maturing to do. Really enjoyed this season.

Jessica sang three boring songs ... very boringly.
P2's last song at least was interesting. P2 for the win! WGWG5 ... I feel it.

I missed tonight's show - P2 had it won as soon as Joshua Ledet was voted off last week.

Here is his single (audio), it is catchy:

Jessica is very talented and she can certainly have an "International" career right now, just as "Charice" did a few years back (she's the Fillipina teenage phenom that Oprah or Ellen or David Foster discovered, -she's had a few appearances on "Glee"). Personally, I think Jessica is at that stage where she's just an amalgam of other singers she likes, and she really hasn't carved out her own identity. That's sort of why I don't like having teens on the show.

Jessica's single sort of embodies exactly what I hate about these ballads the finalists get every year. On the other hand, I was astonished at how much I genuinely liked Phillip's song.

Jessica's single was written by a little factory in either Nashville or LA, and she performed it. That's it.

Phillip's song was one that fit him, deserved more attention, and was produced and performed well. Probably the best final song on AI ever. Phillip's not perfect, Jessica is the best technical singer with no doubt. But that song closed the door.

According to the website howmanyofme.com, there are 436 people in the US named "Phillip Phillips". There are 1,257 people named "Jessica Sanchez".

I posted this in last week's thread. Jessica now has 90k more followers than Phillip. Plus she's a lot more active, tweeting 10x more than he does. Will this equate to more votes? I think it just might. Or, at least, that's my theory

I feel like the producers sort of threw Jessica under the bus here. The Idol single they gave her was not only boring but it gave her no opportunity to exercise the one advantage she has over Philly Phil... that big voice. She tried to squeeze it in the best she could, but that modern style of stuttery pop ballad just isn't designed to showcase big-note singers like Jessica -- it actually seems like something engineered to make some so-so Disney Channel singer sound decent. WGWG's song, on the other hand, seemed taylor-made for him.

She even mentioned it wasn't what she preferred to do. But at this point, it really doesn't matter if you win it. A few have become VERY successful without winning it.

I picked Jessica to win back in April but after watching last night's performances, she peaked a few episodes ago and kinda went backwards in her growth. While Phillip has continued to get better each week and peaked with his final performance which will be fresh in voters minds. I still think it'll be very close.

My kid and I sent in votes for Jessica--our only votes of the season--to try to stave off WGWG5 and based on the whole season, not just last night. I don't think it'll do any good, though.

Re: American Idol -- Season Finale -- Final 2 Perform -- 5/22, 5/23

Come on, WGWG!!!

That is a pretty decent coronation song. If I heard it on the radio, I would've thought it was a new song from Mumford and Sons without thinking twice about it.

Though it's hard to see the upside of him winning much more than what Crystal Bowersox did (~100k sales; limited radio play). The alt/folk rock crowd is much less accepting of American Idols than the pop and country fans. And PP doesn't seem like the sort to make concessions for crossover appeal.

Re: American Idol -- Season Finale -- Final 2 Perform -- 5/22, 5/23

Any idea how the singles are selected? I almost got the feeling while watching the show that there was some choice involved on the part of the contestants, but I'd always assumed there wasn't. At least having different songs is better than forcing Blake Lewis to sing the same ballad as Jordin Sparks.

If PP does win based on the actual performance of his single rather than just being WGWG, then power to him.

Winning would mean a lot more money going into his pocket and probably a bigger marketing push and radio play when his album comes out as compared to Crystal Bowersox getting second place. The extra cash might even provide him the chance to not have to make some of those concessions.

It changes all the time. Most of the time the singles are pre-selected. When Kara was still on the show, she co-wrote one of the singles. One year there was a song writing contest and the winner was the chosen American Idol single. A few years ago when Lee DeWyze won, his single was actually a U2 cover.

Took until the final 9 to nail it

Though I did identify him earlier:

I think I have Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome from all the screaming at me tonight. Thank god for PHillip winning and getting to hear that song again to bring me back to reality. Happy for the guy...he never sold out to become anything other than who is is. He is a really humble talented artist and I am a fan and will buy the cds. So touching to see his emotion at the end. Last night you can tell he was in the moment, his eyes taking it all in.

Yeah, the Divas tonight were especially screamy/strange.

Loved the sponsored proposal, sooooo romantic.

I wish that would have helped Josh win X Factor, but he lost to Simon's diva.

Re: American Idol -- Season Finale -- Final 2 Perform -- 5/22, 5/23

Worst two hours of television ever?

Holy god, that was torturous.

Are there people out there who actually enjoy listening to others scream hysterically in lieu of actually singing in tune?

I'm not a Phil fan, but compared to all of the other ridiculous over-the-top crap that went on tonight, he was the very embodiment of genuine musical talent.

Tonight's AI finale was little more than a goddamn hollering contest.

I've got a fucking headache that won't go away.
