It's an odd addition, nothing more. I don't know why it deserves an argument.

There might be a reason, maybe they are showing how much that Gendry/Arya had to go through, or maybe showing how ruthless war/torture is.

I don't think they just threw it in for fun.

Because you didn't say "Hmm...that's an odd addition." You said things about how the writers take liberties with the story and that they were inventing stuff without having context.

Oh. I didn't watch those because I assumed they were "in-episode" features. I'll have to go back and check them out.

Exact same thing! Thanks for clarifying things.

Of course, and every observation posted is attacked by offended GoT fanatics. I still don't know why you care about my observation enough to attack it and defend the TV writers.

If I noticed something completely created for the LoTR movies, I'd have the same reaction. Like I said, omitting scenes for brevity or inventing scenes to cover ground is one thing. Adding a detail for no apparent reason is another.

But you can't invent a scene for brevity?

Aragorn just handing the hobbits their swords was a great example of that. And one I thought was better than the book.

I've read the GoT books several times and the rat scene didn't even register as an addition. I knew they tortured those people in that setting, and I just thought I didn't remember it. I must have read or seen something about that method of torture because I didn't even blink an eye when it happened.

The "without context" part was specifically meaning your lacking of. Of course people are going to attempt to explain and expound on it. It's a discussion forum.

You know, the torture scene....that was specifically crafted to contrast Robb refusing Roose Bolton's request to torture Lannister prisoners. (this also happened on the show, but these accents are inpenetrable sometimes)

They needed to make that contrast on TV that the books do differently. Two different mediums need different presentation styles.

There's tons of deviation from the books in the LOTR movies, some of it completely from scratch. I love the movies, but there's a huge hunk of time sliced out of Fellowship, the swords Aragorn gives the hobbits is dropped in to make up for a deleted scene (no Tom Bombadil), and the ending is HUGELY different. Tons of stuff like that.

As far as GoT, I think it's probably budgetary - like someone said, it's cheaper to do the rat/bucket thing than it is to show them flaying the skin off of someone, or the other various kinds of torture they could do.

Re: Game of Thrones -- "Garden of Bones" -- 4/22/12

I must have missed something, when did Dear Leader ever make an attempt to work with others? He's always said he wants it his way. He even scolded McCain, in public, that they had to do things as he said because he won the election. So I have to call Fail on that pic.

But, then I suppose this whole political debate belongs elsewhere.
