Wow, I totally forgot about that too. If that's the case, and it fits in with what we found out here, then it's something I wish they had played up.

Up until now I feel like the Observers were very benign simply acting as scientists. However, it begs the question, if they're intent on taking over, then why not go to some time when there's less resistance? 1500, 1800, etc?

maybe they need the technology of our time or the infrastructure, so going further in the past wouldn't be good for them. who knows.

Now that I think about it, if they get a 5th season, moving the show forward in time to 2036 and getting only 13 episodes doesn't sound like enough to me. I think story-wise, that opens the door to so many more stories and possibilities.

Damn, why the fuck aren't more Americans watching this show?

And if this gets a 5th season, can't they move it to another night? Why does it have to stay on Friday? Put 2 Gordon Ramsay shows at 8 and 9pm and Friday nights are set and FOX won't lose money for the night.

From Fringe executive producer Joel Wyman's twitter today:

Q: do you think you will know if fringe gets renewed this week?

Wyman: Yes.

Q: On a scale of 1-10, how positive are you feeling about renewal?

Wyman: Hahaha. um... 9.99. Good? Jeff and I have faith in Kevin Reilly and all our friends and supporters at Fox.

Wyman: We feel SO positive about a pick up because our fans make people listen. They make people take notice. Have loud voices and are heard. xo

My thinking. In order for their plan to work history had to play out exactly like it did. Observers with their high level math and tech were able to determine all the historical events crucial to maintaining the timeline. They would go back in time to monitor these crucial events to ensure they occured like they were supposed to. They suspected, or knew, there may be interference. Their invasion in itself could throw off the timeline, preventing their future from happening. I'm thinking 2015 is the earliest date they could invade without the invasion disrupting the timeline in such a way their future doesn't happen.

This, exactly this. Remember they're not aliens -- they're what we humans eventually become (I guess in 600 years or so?). So their existence depends on our timeline playing out in a certain way. Which begs the question -- are Peter, Olivia & Henrietta important for our future, or theirs? I think Walter's Cortexiphan trials may be the seed for our evolution into them, hence their interest in him and his offspring.

Both interesting points. If that is the case, then September was not only a rebel, but also the hidden hero. Seems like they could have played that up.

However, didn't he accidentally kill Peter by distracting Walter? If so, he's the reason the Observers were able to take over later in life? Or rather, did his accident allow Henrietta to come into existence? She's only the product of alt Peter and our Olivia, correct?

The "Month" Observers were a small science team, it looks like the ones from this week are more your average military/corporate/government guys. Keeps pretty close to Fringe to have the Scientists be the heroes.

I think Peter's observer, September, has always been rogue. For whatever reason he cannot prevent the invasion, but can alter the timeline to create Henrietta, who is crucial to defeating the Observers in 2016.

1. Distract Walternate so he misses the cure for Peter
2. Help Walter to cross over and snatch Peter.
3. Save Peter from drowning when he and Walter cross over.

Doing these

1. Cortexiphan trials are begun to create soldiers in case of war with alt universe
2. Fringe events begin happening
3. Fringe Division is formed
3. Walter, Peter, Olivia brought together
4. Peter and Olivia have Henrietta
5. Henrietta plays crucial part in defeating observers circa 2016.

Henrietta's birth is the crucial point in time. It's when Henrietta is born that alarms go off and all their calculations go out the window.

Obviously the observers did not want both universes destroyed. Otherwise their future would be destroyed also. But, all their projections showed that Peter would enter the machine and save the universes. No problem. No more Peter. No Henrietta. That's why they don't want Peter coming back, but September did.

Unknown:
If the two universes merge we have to assume this was supposed to happen, if this episode was the merged universe.
The observers have to know about Henrietta and the threat she poses. They can calculate the future after all. What we haven't been shown yet is what steps they take to a)prevent the birth, b)find and neutralize her as a threat.

The paradox is that whenever Henrietta does whatever defeats the observers, at that moment the observers will disappear and everything will revert to if the observers had never travelled back in time, erasing herself, since she is a product of observer interference.

No one has mentioned the brilliant BLADE RUNNER-esque opening to the episode?

Admittedly, I may have missed it. But did Walter explain WHY they encased themselves in amber? It certainly seems to make them seem vulnerable rather than protected since they are immobile and amber is not impenetrable if the observers found them.

Thos.

LOVED the episode but will be sorely disappointed if that's all we get. Awesome to think of a Fringe-resistance storyline.

Aged Broyles looked like hell.

Agree with others that the Olivia connection was obvious, from her hair to her speech patterns. It's stuff like this that makes me appreciate the craft of acting.

I assume Boba is actually referring the the opening scroll at the very beginning that summarized what happened when the Observers took over in 2015. If so, I thought it was very Blade Runner-esque and COMPLETELY AWESOME.

The beginning was awesome. It also had the same musical style as the start of BR.

What an episode, this show keeps taking up a notch. I am thrilled there will be another year and a chance to wrap up the show.
