Synopsis:

Spoiler:
In the fifth-season finale, Hank walks into a bar filled with shadowy figures and a bartender who is a long-departed friend. He begins to suspect this isn't California anymore, but one helluva place to kill some time. After he snaps out of it, Hank heads over to Becca's, where he gets some unsettling news. Later, he goes to the movie set, where Charlie proves how much of a friend he is by almost taking a bullet for him, literally.

Re: Californication -- Season Finale -- "Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be" -- 4/01/12

A meh finale to a meh season. The season started off great, but quickly devolved into the old let's-humiliate-Runkle-and-have-him-running-around-naked-and-screaming plot device. Becka was whiny and pitiful as usual, but thankfully her presence was much reduced this year. They set up a great story line with Hank and Samurai's girl and just let that fizzle to nothing, as well as what I thought would be a cool change in direction as Hank gets involved with a musician.. and just nothing. Nothing happened. They just dropped that whole storyline mid-season and left the show flailing around. At the very least they could've had Hank picking up chicks or writing or something (as a writer, I always enjoyed those parts of the show about his efforts at writing, being an author, etc).. but Hank just kinda did nothing but inexplicably cover for his ex's new husband's cheating while Runkle inexplicably covered for HIS ex's new husband's cheating. Why in the fucking world would they do that when they both want their ladies back??? I love this show so much, and am very fond of the characters, but the last two seasons have been very very disappointing. Makes me wonder if what I love is what the show COULD be or could have been or used to be instead of what it's turned into.

Ever heard of the old expression about killing the messenger who brings bad news?

And, if you're interested in having a relationship with a woman, going up to her and informing her about her husband cheating on her probably isn't going to endear you to her, and she's going to suspect your motives. In such a scenario, it's better to let her figure the shit out for herself and be there to do clean-up.

I've been very close to a few of these situations... not long ago one of my cousins made a play for his best friend's wife by flat out informing her that her husband was using drugs again. Now, neither of them are speaking to him. I had known for some time that my cousin, who was recently divorced, had sort of become obsessed with his friend's wife and knew that he was going to make a play for her. His friend, the druggie, knew exactly what was going on, but the wife was - and, as far as I know, still is - clueless as to what happened there.

I was sort of hoping Samurai would kill Tyler, so we would get rid of two assholes in one swoop. Tyler would be dead, and Sam would have in narcissistic ass in prison.

I enjoyed the season and the finale... But it was sorely lacking in nudity. What is the deal with THAT?

We're not talking about some chick Hank or Runkle wants to get with, and we're not talking about running up to her and being the messenger. We're talking about ex-wives who are also the mothers of their children whom they've maintained close friendships with, and both of these guys going out of their way to COVER for the guy who's cheating on this woman. I'm mostly referring to Hank going so far as to pretend that Mangina's prostitute is his "new girlfriend" for an entire day, and infuriating both Karen and Becca in the process, to cover for Mangina. That's a LOT of effort to keep someone you love from knowing she's being cheated on. That episode in particular was a series low, in my opinion.

An absolutely brutal finale to a pretty terrible season. This show just continues on a downward trajectory.

Oh how I miss its early days.

How the shit did they secure the rights to use a Zeppelin song? I mean, they've been used in only a small handful of movies, and besides a Cadillac commercial, I can't think of another TV show that has been allowed to used one.

Oh no! Hank messed up with Karen and she's going to find out... but it wasn't his fault!!

I hope he explains himself next season and makes it up to her so they can be together!

Are the writers of this show retarded? Do they not see that they keep going around and around in circles? If you're going to give us that kind of ending, at the very least don't make it so predictable.

It's true. This season has seen a really concerning drop in quality. I suspect next season will be the last.

Hung and Californication going... any worse and I'll have to go back to porn.

Awful season finale.

Quite possibly the worst episode of the entire series.

For the most part, I've enjoyed this season and the re-boot feel it had to it. But, I think Tom Kapinos and his writers were running out of compelling ideas as the season winded down.

Agree, Total Bullshit cliffhanger. If your going to get Natalie Zea to come back and essentially rape Hank in a drug induced state, at least make her show some skin.

they've been out of ideas for a couple seasons now, but at least last season had an actress w/ a great rack.

That's what I thought too.

Plus did we ever get to the rapper's girlfriend naked this season? What a tremendous waste.

Best part of this season, Lizzy being naked. What a shitty finale. I don't remember episode 1 of this season but did Hank written any books in the 2 year gap?

Yes. I don't think they spoke about it but in the beginning you see him walking past a bookstore and he looks to see his new book on the shelf. It's called "Californication"... Very subtle.

I bet it won't end up on the DVD though.

That wasn't rape. That looked to me more like a double suicide attempt.

One Tree Hill (of all shows) used a Zep song (Babe I'm Gonna Leave You) around 5 years ago. It remained intact on the DVD, too, so I would assume it would here as well.

I hated, absolutely hated the final scenes

Pathetic

Series started off well and then went downhill

Samurai's girl lowering herself to go with Cappie killed that storyline. Cappie overall doesn't fit into this show

Lizzy was the only redeeming feature this series, hot as hell.
