This is the thread for all of you book worms who want to compare and contrast it to the books. I don't read the books, so I won't be visiting this thread. So as a warning to all of you lurkers in this forum, stay out of this thread if you don't want to be spoiled about anything. You will have only yourself to blame if you have no self control and are compelled to read this thread.

Also, this is the place for other spoiler material, specifically from this sight:

http://www.makinggameofthrones.com/

Interviews from the creators and anyone who wants to talk and speculate about future episodes.

;) Are we all cool? Keep it here and keep episode-related stuff in the episode threads. Muchas Gracias.

Just to make it clear and to avoid the bitching and moaning later on, is the entire book series fair game or does anything that happens after Clash need to have spoiler tags?

I think it should be only for season 2 so it should only be discussions about Clash of Kings. Everything past that should be in spoilers.

The problem is that it is entirely probable that plotter lines from other books could be brought up in this season, I think all materials should be up for discussion

Gotta be honest, I can't remember exactly which storylines happened in which books.

And those lines will be even more jumbled in the tv series

It's going to be interesting to see how they are going to fit everything in. We still haven't been to Renly's camp, Arya's group was barely on the screen, and Theon leaves for the Iron Islands next week. I'm guessing we won't see much of Bran until Theon returns to Winterfell.

I spoiled the warg thing to my wife after she commented that "Bran has interesting dreams". I wasn't sure what was being conveyed there.

Are spoiler tags required here since the thread is about spoilers? Should we leave spoilers from Clash wide open but tag things from further books since some new readers might not have got that far?

Re: Game of Thrones -- Season 2 Spoilers Thread -- Book Discussion and Other Material

I think it should be all open in here.

Davos and Stannis seem like they'll be great, even if they don't look like how I imagined them.

I think it came up last season, but I pronounced Gendry with a J sound when reading it.

It's been a while since I read it, was Joff as obsessed with the bastards in the book?

Groucho 04-02-12 07:51 AM

Re: Game of Thrones -- Season 2 Spoilers Thread -- Book Discussion and Other Material

The "purging of the bastards" occurred in the book, but it was all "off screen" and not witnessed by any of the POV characters, so it was somewhat muted. The killing of the baby in the brothel was told about second hand.

There shouldn't have to be any spoiler tags, anything and everything should be open for discussion since different story items from different books will make it into this season.

Re: Game of Thrones -- Season 2 Spoilers Thread -- Book Discussion and Other Material

So this is interesting...

My husband is currently finishing GoT, and about to start reading ACoK. We watched the episode together last night. After seeing how many non-readers assumed Joffrey ordered the deaths of the bastards, I asked my husband who he thought did it. This was his response:

"Well, it was presented like it was Cersei. However, I don't think that's the case. I say it has to be Stannis because: (i) he knew about the bastards and who they were; and, (ii) if Joffrey isn't a legitimate heir, the only people who present a threat to his claim to the throne are the bastards."

I told him about the Joffrey theories, and this was his response to that:

"He's an idiot. He's redecorating and force feeding booze to idiots. Somehow that doesn't scream crafty planner to me."

Apparently there is a screencap of Ghost from episode 2, HBO GO Dutch has episode 2 early. Ghost looks pretty well sized:

Stannis? If he controlled the city guard, I'm pretty sure he'd find a better use for them in his war effort than killing children.

It's obviously not Stannis. Stannis would want the bastards to parade around to show that Joffrey isn't the legitimate heir and he is. Also, in Westeros a Bastard CANNOT be heir unless they've been legitimized which Robert never did. This was an important plot in the history of the books as one of the Targaryen Kings (a few years before the Dunk and Egg stories start) legitimized all his bastards on his deathbed, one of them believed he should be the true king over his legitimate brother and he then started the Blackfyre rebellion.

I think the show is making it out to be Joffrey, but I got the impression from the books it was Cersei's doing in an effort to strengthen his claim and hide any contradicting evidence.

Re: Game of Thrones -- Season 2 Spoilers Thread -- Book Discussion and Other Material

I'm going to spoiler this until we know for sure how much we can talk about in this thread.

Anyways, I love that they are giving Robb a ton of facetime, and that will be important going forward in future seasons
Spoiler:
So that when RW happens, the viewers are much more invested in Robb, in the books Robb was always off fighting wars, but you never really connected with him, TV allows you to do that.

^^^ Book 3 spoilers (aka don't click unless you are on book 4)

Many of the events of Book 3 - most of which I hope will be in Season 3, are going to be AWESOME on TV :D I know there has been talk about some of Book 3 being moved to Season 4 but is that just speculation or have the producers indicated that's what they want to do? RW would be a pretty damn good way to end the season if that does happen.

Spoiler:
yes. I am not looking forward to RW because of that. However, GRRM never gave Robb a POV chapter so that should have been expected.

I already like Robb in the TV series more than in the books.

I saw this gif and my heart sunk a little bit

Please don't click on link until you have read through book 4.

I was listening to the commentary on Season 1 and they made mention of the scene where Theon is in Bran's room trying to get him to come down and be Lord of Winterfell for his duties and how that's was planned to mirror a Season 2 scene. Little details like that are so cool.
