They got a lot of actors in on this. Didn't expect to see Mel.

An Old man as a Doctor? The young fans will love that... Maybe Cloris Leachman can be his companion?

I don't think most Who fans are that superficial.

I believe Capaldi is tied for oldest Doctor with Hartnell.

William Hartnell was 55 -- the same age Peter Capaldi is right now -- when he became the First Doctor in 1963.

An excellent choice, if not a surprising one (thanks to the bookies). I look forward to his tenure.

Can we have Moffat regenerate into another showrunner? Plox?

Capaldi is a great actor. The Doctor is 1,000+ years old. Why should he always be played by young men?

My question is, will they make him change his accent the way they did with Tennant?

Networks want to make money. An older Doctor may turn off the younger crowd.

Blah. No matter how good an actor he is, he's just far too old for this part previously played by someone in their mid 20s.

Guess well know when his episodes start up and look at the ratings. Pairing him with Clara is going to be a nightmare. She has far to much bounce for him. He might pair well with Donna.

Everyone's a critic. I for one look forward to Capaldi's reign as the Doctor.

Malcolm Fucking Tucker! Love it! Fantastic choice!

Who fans really don't care how old the actor is. NuWho fans might tho. They're use to younger actors in the role. My wife was a Tennant fan and immediately said Capaldi was too old.

I can't wait!

I don't.

Won't stop be from watching, however.

I wasn't thrilled with the previous Season anyway (Loved Clara, but the episodes mostly sucked), so a change is welcome.

BTW, Tennant is amazing in Broadchurch. Who fans should really tune in next week when it airs in America. Finishing that show up today.

my only issue is he is really a very known actor. Hell he has done Doctor who and Torchwood.

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)

A lot of actors who go on to become DW leads start with a one-off role earlier in the show. Karen Gillan was in the Pompeii episode, Eve Myles is in the Dickens episode, etc.

You may want to do some cursory research into the BBC.

Colin Baker also played a Commander in a Peter Davison Doctor Who story (Arc of Infinity). Wore a silly hat and everything.

Gizmo,

Are you familiar with any of Capaldi's previous work? If not, I suggest you check out In the Loop (which I believe is on Netflix).

If so, it'll go into my Quene. Gotta finish Broadchurch today.

Agree with you that Broadchurch was excellent. Look forward to series 2. I'm NOT looking forward to Fox's remake of it though

I'm talking about the Torchwood role for the most part. He was on the entire season. Not just a one off episode.

A lot of DW fans don't watch Torchwood.

Yup, and that's bugging me as well. Not that Capaldi isn't a wonderful actor, it's just that his prominent role in Children of Earth will make it VERY difficult to explain how the Twelfth Doctor looks so similar to John Frobisher. After all, it was Frobisher who ordered the destruction of the Torchwood Hub and the assassination of the entire Cardiff team. Heck, Captain Jack spent a significant amount of time face-to-face with Frobisher throughout the series.

I'm thinking that the only way to address it is to act as if it never happened. So, unless Children of Earth suddenly becomes non-canon, I fear that there may never be an opportunity for Jack or Gwen to meet Capaldi's Doctor because there's no way they don't recognize him as the human Frobisher.
