Synopsis:

Spoiler:
As the study group returns after winter break, Jeff (Joel McHale) reveals that he's been seeing a shrink and he's on anti-anxiety medication. The newfound confidence leads him to experience debilitating levels of narcissism, which Britta (Gillian Jacobs) tries to help him manage. Meanwhile, over the break, Abed (Danny Pudi) developed a celebrity impersonator habit that has saddled him with debt. In order to help Abed shed his debt, the study group dons costumes and goes to work for Vincent (French Stewart, "3rd Rock from the Sun," "The Muppets") as celebrity impersonators - appearing in character at a Bar Mitzvah celebration. Chevy Chase, Alison Brie, Yvette Nicole Brown, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong and Jim Rash also star.

Sounds spectacular... waiting with bated breath.

And no, this isn't sarcasm.

Good "Eggs Danny Thomas Style" reference.

Who was the impersonator with the two lobsters supposed to be? That was supposed to be Roy Batty from Blade Runner with the bird in his hand, right?

Hmmmm...something's wrong with our Community. I first noticed it last week, with the "Literally Two Minutes Later" title card and the "Jeff's heart" animation. And this week it was the "Ego Apple" and Chang's thought bubbles.

What's with the sudden reliance on graphics? It's really weird. And clunky. I really don't remember them depending on this kind of stuff before. It just makes the whole tone feel cheesy...and off.

Better than last week's IMO. The fake celebrity thing was a great concept and seeing the cast do their impressions was awesome. I like where they're going with Abed too.

Chang is a definitely weak point though, I don't know if his shtick got old or if he's just better in small doses but he's just not funny anymore and I'm not looking forward to his evil plan developing.

Yeah, that stuff was kind of weird. I'm hoping it was just a coincidence and not something they're going to be doing from now on. The Chang thought bubble stuff was almost cringe-worthy.

Having come in with the obligatory "I can't wait!" post I hope it's clear I love this show... but yeah. The use of these types of gimmicks two episodes in a row is weird. It's like all of a sudden I'm watching Scrubs, which is not an insult, but just weird for Community.

I think that I loved some of the parts (mostly the Jeff stuff), but as a whole this episode was a miss.

"Well this is rare. Both versions of Michael Jackson!"
That completely caught me off guard. Laughed my ass off.

Alvey Singer from Annie Hall.

I busted a gut once I figured out who Abed was.

Not great but I did like all the Jeff stuff. The bits comparing him to Ryan Seacrest never get old. I think those jokes started on "The Soup".

This is an episode that'll demand repeat viewings simply based on how many post-audio jokes were thrown into the mix.

As someone who has always been fascinated by the SelectaVision videodiscs, I was very surprised to hear them mentioned on the show last night.

Troy's Lorenzo's Oil explanation was great. But what was with evil Abed's goatee being real? Felt is totally the way to go with evil goatees.

Re: Community -- "Contemporary Impressionists" -- 3/22/12

I thought it was good, but the cartoony thought bubbles threw me off a bit. It also caught me off guard that they all acted like they just got back from break THIS week. I assume that's because last week's ep was supposed to air before the hiatus?

Anyway, still a lot of funny moments. The Dean's reaction to Jeff's aviator sunglasses look had me dying. And while I was expecting a felt mustache for evil Abed, didn't the "real" evil Abed say something in that episode about wearing felt until the real ones grew in?

Didn't Pierce say that he was converting his stuff to digital? CED discs are analog though.

So is evil Abed a call back to the Alt. Universe episode earlier in the season? I thought there was tons of potential in that.

Some chuckles, but probably my least favorite Community ep so far. The only thing that made me laugh was Shirley's Oprah impersonation.

I'm sure it will bounce back next week.

This show going on hiatus was the best thing for it. Everyone flipped out and started proclaiming it one of the best shows ever, yet I wonder how many of those people remember how hit or miss this season has actually been.

I've never thought it was the "best" show on TV, but it's definitely the most interesting sitcom as far as taking risks. I've never praised it for it's consistency but when it hits one out of the park, it really does.

Well yes, and you said yourself that PIERCE said it - proclaiming he is catching up with the 20th century technology which is already obsolete itself.

Party guest: Boogie Nights! You're fat Burt Reynolds, right?
Pierce: I'll take it.

This show takes risks. Sometimes they pay off, sometimes they don't. But we have enough shows out there that play it safe. I love that they've cleverly setup the parameters of the Community universe that allow them to take these risks without seeming outlandish. For example, the alternate timeline episode. How many other sit-coms out there could pull that off? And yet in Community, you simply think it's brilliant. And for that I can forgive the occasional duds, because on average it's still far and above everything else out there. I actually really enjoyed this week's episode. I felt like last week's was far weaker. I'm hard pressed to even remember what it was about.
