Just curious, raise your hands if your still watching, but struggling to comprehend the dialogue and horse racing jargon and terms? |

Let the fools struggle to understand it. It's a great show. Be thankful it's on HBO rather than NBC or FOX where it would have been cancelled before it even started.

Re: Luck -- "Episode 4" -- 2/19/12
I understand it just fine. It's just that the "Milch-isms" that work so well on Deadwood don't work as well with modern-day settings. It really tiring when everyone is mad at everyone else for just the slightest of infraction. It gets a little ridiculous.

Re: Luck -- "Episode 4" -- 2/19/12
So far I'm still liking it and anything I don't understand in the dialogue doesn't seem to be significant enough to create a barrier to understanding and/or enjoyment.

It already got renewed for season 2, so it least we don't have to worry about a one and done season like Rome (I believe they axed it after one season?) And I think its great that the show is not dumbing it down for fans that aren't patient, or find it hard to follow. There is enough crap on TV's for the dummies (I rarely watch anything on ABC, CBS, NBC or FOX these days), as HBO and many cables shows atleast still try to give you a quality product. |
Re: Luck -- "Episode 4" -- 2/19/12
Rome was originally greenlit as a miniseries (like From The Earth To The Moon, or The Pacific). It did so well they decided to continue the story with a "Season 2".

I like it and will definitely stick out the whole season but it is a little hard to follow. Every week it feels like I missed an episode or something

I have been around the gambling community a large portion of my life. I find it amazing how accurate the portrayals are of the types of people that are drawn to this lifestyle. I am really enjoying it. Because of my familiarity with the setting I do not have a difficult time following it. They do need a better poker advisor though because those scenes show a bit of lack of true poker knowledge.
It has a terrific cast, and unlike John from Cincinnati, the jockeys in this show can really actually act. And the main cast is truly exceptional. Hoffman is not phoning it in, and the supporting cast are fantastic actors all of them. Also, I think it is really brave to have a show with so many truly flawed and potentially dislike-able characters. The language is stylized but I think it works here almost as well as it did in Deadwood |

That dealer was pretty hot.

Not a big horse racing fan but wouldn't having your horse go from 6 lengths behind to winning by 6 lengths in some nowhere race be a really bad move. Isn't horse racing all about expectations?

I haven't watched this episode yet, I do find the show difficult to follow, but I still like it. It's just not one I race to watch right away like True Blood or Game of Thrones.
I'm not sure I even know what Dustin Hoffman's angle is! :o My vague guess is that the reason he was in jail in the first place was because he was implicated in a drug deal, and that his attempt to buy an interest in the track will somehow get back at someone - but I've really got no clue... :( |

In the business meeting between Ace, DiRossi and Cohen, it was also revealed that Ace is trying to secure an investor to help buy a race track at Santa Anita and use some influence to help bring casino gambling there. Although Ace is a felon, so that's why it's important for him to secure an investor(s) and have him be more of a silent partner.
Ace also spent 3 years in prison for cocaine possession. He's not a drug user or seller, but took the fall for his grandson sampling his former business asoociate, Mike, who we haven't seen yet, product. Ace said that Mike was probably going to sell him out. Alot of the plot is Ace trying to seek revenge against Mike.

It was mentioned that Mike was storing cocaine in Ace's place without Ace's knowledge. Ace's grandson discovered the coke while he was staying there and threw a drug party, which the cops stormed. Ace took the hit for his grandson. I think he has a pretty legitimate beef against Mike.
;) Get it? C'mon man pay attention. :D |
