Synopsis:

Spoiler:
In the first hour, "Pilot," Dr. Emmet Cole, beloved adventurer and television personality goes missing deep in the Amazon. After a fruitless search for him, his family and friends abandon hope and hold a memorial service to commemorate his amazing life. His grieving wife, Tess, reluctantly tries to face the reality that her husband is gone, while her son, Lincoln, is more than ready to bury his past. Six months later Emmet's location beacon mysteriously begins to relay a signal. Tess persuades Lincoln to join her and Emmet's film crew on a journey through the Amazon to find him, a journey on which horrifying and almost mythical events will push them to their limits.

In the second hour, "Marbeley," when the spirit of Dr. Emmet Cole mysteriously enters Jahel, the message is clear go home! Instead, Tess determines to go into the jungle to find clues to Cole's whereabouts. While on their mission, they discover a tree draped in children's dolls that they suspect is there to ward off the "spirit of the abandoned girl" who drowned in the river. Then, when a member of the crew goes missing, the group realize they'll have to endure a nightmare in order to appease an angry spirit and get their loved one back.

"The River" stars Bruce Greenwood ("Star Trek") as Emmet Cole, Joe Anderson ("The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Parts 1 and 2") as Lincoln Cole, Paul Blackthorne ("Lipstick Jungle") as Clark, Paulina Gaitan as Jahel, Leslie Hope ("24") as Tess Cole, Eloise Mumford ("Lone Star") as Lena, Shaun Parkes ("The Mummy Returns") as Adjay, Thomas Kretschmann ("King Kong") as Captain Kurt Brynildson and Daniel Zacapa ("Resurrection Blvd.") as Emilio. "The River," from Amblin's Steven Spielberg, Daryl Frank and Justin Falvey, showrunner/executive producer Michael Green ("Heroes," "Kings"), is also executive-produced by Oren Peli (creator of "Paranormal Activity"), Zack Estrin, Jason Blum and Steven Schneider. Teleplay by Michael R. Perry and Michael Green, story by Oren Peli & Michael R. Perry and Michael Green. The pilot is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and produced by ABC Studios.

I can't wait!

This will get Happy Town'ed. No way does it last all 8 episodes in the same timeslot. Looks good...but I don't know if normal viewers will tune it for it.

DVRing it.

The ads have done nothing to interest me. The synopsis in this thread (which is far more informative than the ads) leaves me ambivalent.

Hmmm I might take that action. I'm afraid if I lost you might make me Tebow in an ABC jersey.

I am actually light on shows to watch now and this looks interesting. I usually don't have anything good to watch on Tuesdays so I hope this sticks.

I'm actually shocked about how many people are talking about this show right now. I work in a call center and at least half a dozen people have been asking me if I'll be watching this tonight, as I'm known as the "go-to" TV guy in the office :P.

I'll definitely be watching this one live tonight: Peli + Anaconda Vibe + interesting TV Format.

Can't wait to see the ratings tomorrow. This could prove to be a very good space filler for ABC for a couple of years if the ratings are right.

I was mildly interested before reading the synopsis. Now the show just sounds laughable.

My thoughts exactly. I'll watch it tonight, but my expectations have been severely tempered.

Actually I was much more than mildly interested in this before reading the synopsis.

Damn you. Your post made me read it, and now... yea... I suppose I'll still give it a shot.

Watching it now....the whole fake doc thing is getting annoying. Like with SGU I get the feeling it's there to make it seem like it has more substance than it actually has.

I'm light on Tuesday TV myself as well but unless the remaining 90 minutes really catch me unlike the first 30 I can't see sticking around.

Wow, this show is really over-the-top and from the get-go. I feel like they would've eased into some of the supernatural stuff but apparently not. Not thinking this one will last too long (for me or the public)...

It's only 8 episodes. I have to assume that regardless of the ratings ABC will air the remaining 6.

I enjoyed it. The final half hour was a blast, loved all the stuff with the dolls, super creepy.

Re: The River -- 2 Hour Premiere -- "Pilot/Marbeley" -- 2/07/12

I hate the documentary style. Personally I feel that whole thing (tv and movies) is totally played out and now is just annoying. I would have much preferred if this show was just filmed normally.

Really don't know what to think yet. I'm on the fence. Some pretty creepy scenes but I just don't know if I'm interested in what's going to happen. I don't think I really care what happened to Emmet. Hopefully the mystery gets a little more interesting as time goes by because right now I'm not all that interested. It's only a 6 week commitment though so no harm in sticking with it.

Re: The River -- 2 Hour Premiere -- "Pilot/Marbeley" -- 2/07/12

Yeah, the next show better have more substance than just them walking around and creepy things happening. Otherwise there's no point except to just watch the last show to see them find Emmet.

Re: The River -- 2 Hour Premiere -- "Pilot/Marbeley" -- 2/07/12

Watched the 2 hours, but don't think I'll watch more. Everyone falls into believing all the hocus-pocus stuff way too quickly. The only really interesting character is the reality show director, who at least has a believable purpose for being there - creating saucy, trashy tv by any means necessary.

Pretty big meh from me.

Didn't care about the characters. Didn't care about the mysteries. Fake documentary is annoying. The acting is bland and the cast has no chemistry. It's like one of those quickie Lost wannabes from 2005.

Re: The River -- 2 Hour Premiere -- "Pilot/Marbeley" -- 2/07/12

Well I like the theme of the show but as some others have said the documentary style is a bit much and to me at least it's a little eye fatiguing to watch in HD.. IMO it's more frantic then other shows/movies I've seen shot in the same format.. Way too many speed cuts back and forth for no reason..
Oh and of course stuff that a kid with a point and shoot digital camera could film near perfect, like say a map or something on a wall, is shot by the "pro" camera man with pro level gear as if he is trying to shoot during an 8.5 earth quake or something.. Uggg horrible

then again It's only an 8 ep order and we already knocked back 2 eps with the premiere so odds are I'm in for the next 6 eps.. I'm a sucker for the theme and it seems pretty creepy so far.. I think the show needed a few more cannon fodder level people along for the ride but I guess we wait and see how that works out.. so far, one camera man down..
