Smash (NBC) -- Series Thread -- premieres 2/6/12

The hit-making Broadway writing team of Julia Houston (Debra Messing) and Tom Levitt (Christian Borle) unites with producer Eileen Rand (Anjelica Huston) to create a new musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, and seasoned chorus girl Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty) vies with newcomer Karen Cartwright (Katharine McPhee) for the dream role. Jack Davenport, Raza Jeffrey, Brian D'Arcy James and Jaime Cepero also star.

I know Djariya usually creates these threads, but I thought I'd start something since the pilot is already on itunes, amazon, etc. (Plus it was featured about 10 billion times on the Golden Globes.) I'm a Broadway fan and really looking forward to it.

Fine with me. Just make sure you remember to bump it again February 6th.

I'm looking forward to it too. Like Katharine McPhee alot (I have both of her albums) and the rest of the cast is pretty good.

FYI, this Pilot is available for free on Amazon Instant Video as David just mentioned.

Dare I say it:
McPhee's version of "Beautiful" is better than Aguilera's.

I would agree. Aguilera's showiness isn't a credit. I think McPhee's more subtle version conveys the necessary defiance but also with some of the vulnerability that the singer would need.

Aguilera's problem is she thinks she's better than she actually is, and because of that, she over sings. If she would step it down a notch or two, she could have an amazing voice. --- Says the person who can't sing a note to save her life!

Great pilot, and I'm glad I gave it a try despite my complete lack of interest in Broadway and Marilyn. I can actually see NBC having a huge it in their hands with this show.

One thing I don't buy is them trying to sell Mcphee as feasible stage performer compared to an obviously talented pro like Hilty. I've never liked the nervous/shakiness of Mcphee's voice and her ability to sing Christina covers haven't improved one inch since Idol, and her Beautiful is lacking in the texture and vulnerability of Christina version. Yes, Christina oversings a lot of her songs, but Beautiful isn't one of them (I read the the producer forced to follow the guide demo to prevent any unneeded runs).

Her studio voice is fine, it's her live performances that need to be toned down.
Perfect example: her regrettable version of The Star Bangled Banner at last year's Super Bowl.

They took it off Amazon but it's still on Hulu for those that care.

I'm going to watch this for McPhee alone. She's gorgeous.

I'd be excited if this were a Friday Night Lights spinoff.

I watched it a week or 2 ago off of iTunes (the premier is also on youtube, for those that care). I liked it and think it could do well. I had the baseball number stuck in my head for a couple of days.

In the show, I'm interested to see how they sell McPhee's character for the role over Hilty's character, as she seems to be the obvious/home run choice to play Marilyn.

Re: Smash -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 2/6/12

I got this off Amazon last week, but hell I'm going to watch it tonight after The Voice.

I do like musicals and Kat McPhee is awesome. Plus, the supporting cast is good too. It's going to be tough for it tonight since new episodes of Castle and Hawaii Five-O are on.

Re: Smash -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 2/6/12

Thanks for the bump for tonight.

I saw this a week ago on Comcast On Demand and really really wanted to love it, but for some reason it didn't quite click. Stereotypical characters kind of bugged me. I did like McPhee and the music so I'll probably watch the pilot again and watch future episodes.

I wanted to like it too. Way, way too much boring dialogue and not enough singing. I hoped this was going to be like Chicago but a tv series.

Was a bore until 40 minutes in when McPhee finally got to sing something. I'll give it a few more watches.

It was bugging me as to who was McPhee's boyfriend on the show, and then I remembered him playing Zephyr on "Spooks" in the UK.

Didn't really care for most of the subplots of the creative crew, but enjoyed the singing numbers.

I agree. I know that the show is trying to show Katherine McPhee's character as an underdog, but Megan Hilty is just too perfect as Marilyn.

Looks like a good show, I'll try to catch future episodes.

And it has been dropped from the free version of Hulu though it is still on Youtube (or YouLenz, as it appeared on the show (15:18 mark)).

I know and then 40 minutes of zzzzzz until she sang again.

Hilty is a little too chubby for me in this part.

Re: Smash -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 2/6/12

I liked it, but I didn't love it. Honestly it dragged a little in the beginning.

Do we really need some adoption subplot with Julia and her husband? That was so unnecessary.

Loved Kat McPhee. Beautiful, great presence and solid musical performances. Karen is definitely being portrayed as the underdog compared to the seasoned veteran Ivy.

and of course they make Jack Davenport the sleazy director.

I don't think Megan Hilty is chubby. There is fat and there is voluptuous and she falls into the latter category. I liked her Marilyn rendition with the dancers. Not 100% sure, but one of the dancers looked like Alex Wong from SYTYCD from a few seasons ago.

What was the name of the song that she and Hilty sang at the end? That sounded really familiar. The musical aspect of the show didn't really kick in until halfway through.
