I don't know if The General is in all states. I think it may only be in select ones. I know they show it here in California, it was just on. :lol:

Maybe this should be a generic commercial bitch and moan thread but I think we have one of those already.

I just watched a new and very stupid General commercial with him playing football. It is commercials like these that make me want to avoid certain goods and services rather than peak my interest.

The General's commercials air all the time here in RI. We also have a lot of JG Wentworth's 877-Cash-Now bullshit.

I loathe those commercials as well. I hadn't seen those in awhile so thanks for bringing that bullshit back to the forefront. :) And anytime those cash for gold commercials come on I can see my 8 year old's interest peak as she starts looking around the house thinking we're going to be rich.

I mute ALL commercials, but whenever I see those JG Wentworth ads I turn my head so I won't even have to look at that shit. Damn...:brickwl2:

I swear most advertisers think we're a bunch of brainless sheep who will believe absolutely anything we see (I'm sure there are a few out there like that but damn!). I HATE commercials, and there are SO MANY of them on television these days that neither my wife nor I even like to watch much TV, makes me appreciate my DVD collection even more. -kd5-

If you're watching commercials you're doing it wrong. In this day and age, with DVRs there is no reason to ever be subjected to commercials.

We watch live TV as we don't have a DVR. I have never bothered getting one as I didn't feel like paying for a device to record shows that I can just watch. Another reason is because we spend more time watching blu rays and dvds than broadcast television. Besides, it amazes me that people get paid money to make some of the commercials that we have to endure.

I'm always surprised when people ask this question. I got a DVR nearly 10 years ago and I've hardly seen a commercial since. About the only time I see them is if I'm at a friend's house...and then it's nothing short of madness to sit through them.

I have some friends with DVRs who still watch live TV, but I haven't any clue why. Even if someone wants to see a live sports event or the local news, all you have to do is start them the appropriate amount of time late so you catch up to the live feed by the end of the show.

Don't we have better things to do with our time than watch The General?

Really? Maybe I'm the only one who likes to watch live events, well, live. I don't like watching sports games after they had occurred unless I have to absolutely miss it for any reason.

I'm sure most people DVR sitcoms and shows (I do), but what about sporting events and newscasts?

Rarely watch anything live.

Football is a great sport to watch dvr'd.
Each play has about 30 seconds between them so I can start a game about
30-45 minutes late and hit skip at the end of each play and not miss a thing.

I believe that watching sports is all about the moment. Even if I could watch a game after it is played it is not the same. It is all about seeing it play out in front of you and not you watching it while the players and other fans are out drinking and doing other things. I can watch dvds and blu rays to relive the moment but there is nothing like watching it happen live. I feel this way especially after watching game 6 of this year's World Series.

Right--I agree. I wouldn't want to watch a sports event 24 hours later either. But why not just start it an hour later? That way you get to skip all commercials and you're still done at the same time as everyone else. Maybe I just hate commercials so much I try to find creative ways around them. :P

I often use the commercial times to do stuff in the kitchen like empty the dishwasher or other stuff that needs to be done. Besides, I spend so much of my time watching tv on the laptop as well that a few minutes of commercials don't bother me. What does bother me are the commercials that treat all of us like we are just flat out dumb.

I recorded the Star Wars trilogy last week to have on the DVR for the kids but there's a friggin' Trojan ad during every commercial break. :wtf:

Let's look at the demographic they are going for here... kids and Star Wars nerds, neither of which are getting laid. Money well spent Trojan.

Well, we don't have a DVR, not enough good stuff on TV to justify us buying one either. We ditched cable 3 years ago because of the absence of decent programming and the commercials in favor of watching what WE wanted to watch on DVD, minus the commercials. Monday thru Friday we'll watch about an hour and a half of regular television (an hour while we eat dinner, and the 6:00pm local news), the mute botton gets a lot of use during that time. On the weekends we only watch the 6:00pm news and the mute button still gets a lot of use. That's it. That's all the regular broadcast television we watch. The rest of the time spent watching our television is spent watching my DVDs. The only TV shows we might watch on broadcast television would be NCIS, Fringe, and Supernatural, but because of the advertising we wait until they come out on DVD where we can watch them at our leisure. Again, no real need for a DVR as we don't care about waiting until they're released on DVD.

If I had to name one thing (besides the advertising) that we are sick and frelling tired of, it would be the HORRIBLE programming on television these days: If it isn't reality crap shows, it's stoopid sitcoms, game shows, dramedies, or a whole plethora of legal dramas. And even when they put a compelling, spellbinding, imaginative series on television, if they don't kill it with advertising, the suits pull it off the air after the first season (think Invasion, Space: Above & Beyond, Threshold, Surface, etc.), or the writers get lazy and kill it (think Heroes). Apparently, the suits must think what the people want is more stuff to rot our brains. I refuse to let them dictate what I watch. -kd5-
