Those 2 Golden Globe nominations sure helped. HBO has just picked up the Mike White-Laura Dern comedy Enlightened for a second season, while canceling 3 other comedy series, Hung, Bored To Death and How To Make It In America. Enlightened drew critical praise but struggled mightily in the ratings on Mondays. However, ratings have never been the deciding factor in HBO’s renewal decisions as evident by the longevity of David Simon’s New Orleans drama Treme.
Hung and Bored To Death are ending their runs after 3 seasons, How To Make It In America after 2. Of the 4, Hung has been the highest rated and star Thomas Jane recently landed his second Golden Globe nomination for his role on the show. But in the end that wasn’t enough.

I bailed on Hung before this recent season even started, so I'm glad to known I ditched it at the right time.

I'm PISSED about HTMIIA. I watched Hung but it never lived up to the premise. Bored To Death had a good run.
The one episode of Enlightened I saw I did not like.

If not for HBO's incoming slate of new series, Lombardo and Plepler might have renewed one or two of the shows that were canceled. Net, however, is under a strict Sunday-only programming slate going forward -- with the exception of one or two smaller Friday shows -- the strategy for 2012 is to not air original series on Mondays.
That experiment, which had been attempted previously with "Six Feet Under" and "Big Love" many seasons ago, looks to be shelved for awhile now. HBO tested "Enlightened" on Mondays during its first season with poor results.
Among the new comedy series HBO has arriving in the new year are "Girls," created by and starring Lena Dunham; "Veep," with Julia Louis-Dreyfus; "Life's Too Short," with Ricky Gervais; and "Angry Boys," from "Summer Heights High" creator Chris Lilley. Also set to return is the third season of Danny McBride baseball laffer "Eastbound & Down."
On the drama side, Jan. 29 marks the debut of the David Milch-Michael Mann horseracing drama "Luck." The Aaron Sorkin project starring Jeff Daniels, tentatively titled "Newsroom," is looking like a possible summer entry. Also arriving are the return seasons of "Game of Thrones," "Treme" and "Boardwalk Empire."

Hung's 3rd season was actually decent. It was miles better than season 2 and had alot of great sex scenes. Saw that it was never really popular in this forum.
Oh well:
Being shot in Detroit and having a fairly small cast, it looked relatively cheap to make.
The funny thing about the season finale is it didn't even feel like a Finale.

Bored To Death had a lot of star power, relatively speaking. Surprised it got canceled and more surprised it didn't get more viewership.

Going to miss Rebecca Creskoff's boobs. She'll never get another job on TV where she was able to showcase her body like on Hung.

They have 6 new shows scheduled for 2012 - Angry Boys, Luck, Life's Too Short, Girls, Veep, and Sorkin's new show.

Can we avoid untagged spoilers in this thread? I have yet to watch the last seasons for any of these shows, but still want to read the reaction to their cancellation.

Life's too short is getting dogs abuse in the UK, -people hate it.
Totally upset about Bored to Death and how to make it. someone needs to employ Lake Bell.

Three shows getting cancelled is basically a network bloodbath for HBO. I just watched the latest seasons of Bored to Death and How to Make It in America over the weekend. I enjoyed both of them a lot, though probably liked Bored to Death a bit more. I'm definitely sorry to lose them, though I at least feel like HTMIIA got some sense of resolution in its finale. I was thinking HBO might have been trying to make HTMIIA its next Entourage. I guess not.
I'm a little surprised, though pleased, that Enlightened got renewed. I thought it got much better as it went along, and I'm a big Laura Dern fan anyway. I hope it's able to continue developing.
I still have this season of Hung sitting on my DVR. Is it worth watching or will I only get frustrated when it ends knowing it won't be coming back?

I was kind of ambivalent toward the hipster How to Make It show but the second season showed some promise and it was much better than the first. They got Gina Gershon involved for nothing.

It's worth watching. It was a satisfying season and many will say, its best. You'll likely be rewarded despite the fact it's not returning.

That's what I was thinking, too. It seems like it would really limit HBO's expansion of original programming, though I guess that didn't prove so profitable.

Well shit...
Going to miss them all esp Bored and HTMIIA.
With the film credits in MI being taken away, it's possible that affected the return of Hung. Just speculation.

I wonder if Ted Danson will appear in another new show now. He's kept pretty busy the past couple years.
